Kidding. We do know what halloween is here. But it's really not a big deal for most people... I wasn't allowed to trick or treat even when I was young enough too. The sugar is bad for my teeth and (direct quote) "It's just another atupid imported cusdtom from America, which is taking over the world, die America!" (OK, so maybe not a _direct_ quote. But that was the sentiment. I love my mother, not.)
Halloween is from All Hollows Eve and it's from the UK not the US. There is also a Day Of The Dead in Mexico as well as a few other I can't remember. I will admit that the US has comercialized the day more (they tend to do that with a lot of Holidays) but you can't blame the event only on America.

Sorry just had to put my 2 cents in here somewhere. I am still a fan of an old fashion Halloween and the Halloween parties which tend to be safer then Trick-or-Treating is nowadays.

re Duff: Sam, I think she's only big in America.
re Halloween: Did it start over here? For some reason I thought it started in Europe...

      • db: Bookcrossing stuff? Cool... *nees to check to see if any have been left in Wngtn recently*

Emilie: MY MOTHER'S WORDS! Not mine! See what I have to put up with! (See, Dave? It's not wonder I'm sometimes a little rude... look at the upbringing I'm struggling against...)

Agent M: No, we have whiteboards. And yellow school buses are amazing because, well, we don't have them in NZ, and they're in all the movies so they're a bit of a cliche, you know? So it's funny. It's like, "My god, they actually _have_ yellow school buses in Nth America!" Moulin Rouge Soundtrack... *dies* I love that soundtrack. I was singing the Elephant Love Medley on the trampoline just this afternoon, actually....

        Sam: Homecoming's a good book...

Bc: I loved her first CD, and I like the new one, but not as much... it just didn't have as many songs that really got to me they was Isabel, No Angel, and Don't Slide (for examples) did... White Flag is GREAT, though.

*laughs at skybluice* Yes, I know all of that. I weas kidding. I don't balme it all on America... but it has definitely been commercialised by America. I'm not sure if they trick or Treat in the UK or not...

Tui, Isabel was a really good song. And No Angel was pretty good...Don't Slide was excellent! What was that one about her being safe in her own skin? That was weird but good. To see a yellow school bus is an everyday thing...hmmm...Tui...can you the rest of the forum what you have and they don't? like, lush green unpolluted countryside that america doesn't have because you dirty americans trash it! (just kidding)...or something like that. Does anyone like Enya...I know it's weird but her music has a good message and "pretty 'tunes"

As to yellow school buses: uh, yes, they are... see, in NZ actual school buses aren't really a big deal, and when they are (again, rarely) they're charter buses from Stagecoach so they're just the same as our ordinary ones... *shrugs* There are usually six or so school buses in the afternoon, but nobody really gets a school bus in the mornings... plus most people just get ordinary buses home. *shrugs* The only yellow bus I've ever seen is the city Circulars, and they ain't school.

bc: I think it's Luhrman, but I can't remember. Which is actually a real problem since I studied Strictly Ballroom last year... sometimes I like Enya, but I don't know her stuff very well. Uhm.... well, if I was to say what I have and you don't and vice versa, I'd start with candy, move rapidly through diapers, various foods, Mt Ruapehu, Yellowstone, hokey pokey, WELLINGTON, me, tomato sauce, the All Blacks, Parliament, Helen Clark, nuclear power and weapons, Lord of the Rings, Gollum, The Beehive, The White House... *pants* It's impossible.

Kit: Of course Canada rocks. It's a very cool country, except that my Chemistry teacher is from there and she's kinda a bad teacher..... <hums> Blame Canada! Blame Canada!</hums> no, I like Canada. Plus you have the coolest flag.

                          • Well, in the USA and New Zealand you got a bus that takes you from home to school sand from school to home right? Well in Puerto Rico we got yellow buses but you got to pay someone to come and take you. Like differents agencies who you pay to come to your home and your school. Is it like that in there?

I agree, Canada is pretty cool. My family visited it and the Niagara Falls on vacation just last week. Pretty crazy that the first man to survive going over the falls unassisted went over right after we visited. Strange, no? The Niagara falls was one of those places I very much wanted to see before I died. I'm glad I got to see them so soon. It was worth every minute.

                              Pretty interesting Aurora.

In the U.S. most school busses are free and each school district has their own. Well, they're free to ride. They're paid for by "school taxes". Most places people who own property (land and houses) have to pay taxes to support the local public school system depending on how much their property is worth.

I don't know what they do in NZ.
