  • Two-story library isn't as big as it sounds.... The first level has a lot of square footage... Maybe the main part is something like 80 feet by 60.... But it has an extremely high ceiling. Way high. Like, fifty feet high. A couple years ago, they took advantage of that, and built an upper level against three of the walls that goes out about 15 feet. There isn't an upper level above the librarians' desk so it's open there and lets in a lot of sunlight. If you're standing at their desk, you can see the entire lower level, all the entrances to the library, and the upper level's railings (the high ceiling is still open in spite of the upper level; it only goes out from the walls about 15 feet) are plexiglass, so they can see up there too, and in to the side room. The upper level is all books, and they seem to be Nonfiction. The main lower level is all tables, chairs, computers, etc. Then there's the other room off the lower level I mentioned with the Fiction books. Really, it doesn't contain as many books as it seems. But it is a cool setup.

I did start to read The House of the Scorpion, and it's been pretty good so far!

    • Well...I just tried to log in using my school email and password. Needless to say, it didn't work. I'm at home on fall break right now, which is nice...but weird. I mean, everything's the same but everything is different. My parents got a new toaster that I don't know how to use, and new house telephones that I don't know how to call people from. But on the plus side, I finally got texting on my cell phone. I've resisted getting it for the past 4 years, because it is just such a waste of time and energy to type things out on that stupid little phone keyboard...but it's really useful to have in college, where no one picks up their phone because they're always in class, or in the library, or their roommate is sleeping. So, texting is not a bad thing.

Today I drove a car for the first time in 2 months. I guess I didn't really realize how much I'd miss driving a car. It was fun.

College is...college. It's like high school, only with more work, and you can see your friends ALL THE TIME. Which sounds great, but makes it really hard to do homework sometimes. It's almost worse when you're friends with your roommate, like I am, because then you can't work in your room because you'll be talking to each other the entire time.

...I'm way out of date on TOGR, but I saw something about school libraries. Just wait until you guys get to college...speaking of libraries. But most of the books there are for research, so I guess they're not quite as much fun as the fiction section. But seriously...I love the science library on my campus. It is so much quieter than the other library, and even though it's extremely inconvenient for me to work there because any books I need for research are in the other library, it is so worth working there because it is so quiet. I love it-plus, there's wi-fi there. XD

Sea is having boy troubles...again. Not happy about that, and am trying to ignore it, but it's hard to ignore something that everyone keeps bringing up. I like this guy on campus...who likes my friend on the cross country team. Who happens to be the only person on campus who knows I like the guy. I really hate this sort of thing.

Last week was busy...I had a bunch of midterms and 3 papers due. Take into account that I'm only taking 4 classes, and you realize that that is a ridiculous amount of papers due on the same day. So I'm extremely sleep deprived. Great way to go into break, let me tell you.

It's weird being home. I'm so happy I'm home-so happy I get to sleep through the night without being interrupted, so happy that it's possible to go to sleep before 11 at night, happy that I get to eat good food...and yet, I miss hanging out with people 24-7. Most of my friends are still at school right now, and the ones who aren't are kind of busy with work and family stuff. And, although I love my family to death, if we spend the next 3 days together we might go nuts.

I'm not reading anything new...haven't had the time to, actually. Just rereading Pride & Prejudice for the millionth time. Only this time I'm reading it from the nice leatherbound edition my parents gave me for my 18th birthday instead of my beat up paperback copy. It's kind of fun. Alright, I need to sleep...dai all, see you around.

      • Libraries... Oh yeah! My school librarian is crazy! She only has 2 YW books and they are ancient! Plus, they are SYWTBAW and HW, with no DW in between.

I just swam in a swim meet (race) today. I had to get up at 6:30 and ruin my sleeping in. Then I did really well, so my coach is now going to try to send me to age groups. Age groups is pretty much when they take the best swimmers who make these time limits for their age in Alaska and have them compete. Unfortunately, I make three events, and I don't like swim meets.

        • Marina: You got a 218 on the PSAT as a sophomore? Bahhh... That's what I got last year, and I'm a National Merit Semifinalist...

Homecoming dance last night. Pretty much a fiasco. For me, anyway. I don't even know what else to say about it. I'm supposed to be doing homework, since I have to go to work in like, an hour and a half. Hooray for jobs that obliterate the weekend. I'm in a weird mood, pretty cynical and annoyed at the world. I took the SAT a while ago...I wonder when my scores will be in. Darn it. Not til October 23rd. That's frustrating. I didn't do so great the first time I took it.

Ooookay, I'm gonna go work on my calculus now. Hopefully, I can figure out what I'm doing...

            • hey y'all. I haven't been on the forumus in forever. And I mean FOREVER! I've been so busy with school and homework and sports and well...mainly homework. I get the weekly things to read over the stuff, but sadly I can't find the time to respond.
On a hapier note, I'm not depressed! I'm on the volleyball team and freshman year is not as bad as I expected. I made a ton of new friends and ave been able to sorta kinda avoid the drama. Not as much as I'd like to but, whatever.
Umm...so I'm in my 'library' at school right now, and it's really sad. Really uber sad We only have one wall of books, and it's not even full. We are mostly a computer library thing. I feel like our motto is 'down with books, up with computers.' And no one knows the YW series! It's so depressing!! oh my word. The first day of school, for only freshman, I would walk up to people and be like "Dai! what's up hrash't?" and thay would just look at me and be like "...ok." My current friends mostly responded with hey back or something like that.
Drat, band is over, I must depart. So sad. I'll try to get on more often (or at all) but I likely won't see you all again till next band class.
              bell is ringing. Dai' all!!

              • Hello everyone! Sorry I haven't been on in so long...I feel like it's been forever what with school and choir and debate and all that fun stuff that leaves me with no spare time for internetting. I'm supposed to be in bed right now, in fact, but I'll try to be on more often now that quarterfinals are over. On second thought, the first speech tournament is Saturday after next and I'm scared to death of extemporaneous speech, which I'm being shoved into. And we have to practice tomorrow. I am going to die of fear. Seriously.

I got my computer back! YAY! I'm so happy!

One problem, though...the battery won't charge. They gave me the wrong AC adapter! So they're sending another technician to fix that problem, and replace batteries and such... UGGGGG.

Sigh. Oh well. Life just doesn't like my computer, I guess.

                  • Wow. I can't even remember the last time I've logged on to this site. That's not the most pleasant thought!
It feels more like deja vu than anything else, though. To come back, I mean. Sort of like a hallucination. Although Chime being gone makes it odd. I'm just not going to attempt to catch up on any posts at all, because it's hopeless.
Life has eaten my computer free time, bite by bite. Applying to colleges, keeping up with classwork. I'm failing AP Literature, but so is everybody because the teacher's grading methods are just plain weird, so it's not cause for alarm just yet. My other classes are going well. So are the college applications. A department chair from my first choice college called me this afternoon - just to say hello and check up on me! She didn't have anything specific to say, really. It was very strange. Either they're badly hurting for students or they just like me that much. Whichever, I guess it means I'll probably get in. I hope.

I took a trip to look at colleges last weekend. That was exciting. Also spent time briefly with Sean L, from this site, since I was in the area. Much fun. While traveling, I discovered I never ever want to learn to drive. Ever. It's horrifying. However, I don't mind being a passenger, unlike my mom. She screams and shrieks and squeals whenever somebody goes to fast or stops suddenly or misses a turn. It's very nerve-wracking. I'm fine with riding in the back seat of a car, I just don't like the idea of being in control of one.

I got to see a very cool author speak at my school on friday. His T-shirt had the same design as my lunchbox, which earned him about nine thousand coolness points in my eyes. Listening to him speak was pretty amazing, though of course I'd prefer it be DD, but what can you do. Or Neil Gaiman! The author who spoke (whose name I won't reveal because of how amazingly easy it'd be to find my high school) mentioned he got to meet Neil Gaiman, who actually lives sort-of near my town, but is unfortunately a bit of a recluse. My school's Teen Literacy Initiative club has been trying to persuade him to visit for years, but without success.

I'm suddenly in several musical groups. I play fiddle, but I'm not exactly splendid at it. I'm all right, I suppose, but not soloist material. However, I was coaxed into playing in the band for the local show choir, then got saddled with a solo that's impossible to play and I have to perform tomorrow. I'm also playing in a teen garage band with a bunch of cool nerds; we're performing a folk metal song, for which there is a violin part. That one should be more fun than the show choir, though. In Orchestra, we're playing Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens. It's very surreal and creepy, which is apt for Halloween, I suppose.

I think that's enough randomness for one night. Nice to see you guys again.

                    • Dee: Welcome back! To give you an estimate, the last post you made was May 26th, 2008. Assuming that you make posts whenever you log in, of course.

Last Friday night, my school had a Freshmen lock-in. It was really, really fun.... I lasted until about 3 in the morning, and from then until I was picked up at 7 it was a struggle to stay awake! I had to keep moving around between the auditorium (movies), the gym (dancing, moon bounce), the library (board games, quiet time), the band room (Guitar Hero and Rock Band), and the bathroom to keep from falling asleep! The auditorium was particularly dangerous because of the comfy seats and no lights....

At one point, when I returned to the auditorium right after they had started the movie, the lights were being adjusted, and I looked up in to the control booth and saw someone from my theater class adjusting the lights since apparently there weren't any adults around who knew how to do it. I had talked to her earlier, right after the hypnotist performed in the auditorium, and we were agreeing that it was such a strange experience, being in the auditorium with it being full of people, someone performing for a full auditorium... and yet, at the same time, we felt like "Get off of our stage!!" And she said she could envision our theater teacher pacing around the auditorium observing us mill and seethe around the stage (which, coincidentally, we did today in class ).

So I got home and got to sleep around 8. Being up for around 27 hours straight (amazingly I was able to resist falling asleep towards the end) is definitely harder than it sounds!

Friday was kind of a sad day for me, too.... Our Dean of Students has been replaced as of today. Last week, the new guy was "shadowing" the old one. Today was his first day alone. The old guy, Mr. S., was such a joy to be around... especially on Friday mornings. He'd be standing near the buses, "Come one, guys, just one more day! One more day until the weekend; we can do this together!" And last Friday morning, after a three-day week, he said, "This week went by pretty fast... I think we should come back tomorrow to make up for it!" And now he's gone. The new guy seems pretty friendly, but he's not as animated and full of energy as Mr. S. On Friday afternoon as I was waiting for my bus, I asked Mr. S., "How much longer are you going to be here?" He said, "Just another half hour." "Forever?" "Yup, I'm retiring in a half hour...." And apparently this is his fifth time retiring; he told us on the first day of the school he had retired 4 times; he told me that the Headmaster keeps calling him back because they need him while they search for another Dean of Students. They can't seem to hold the position very long. Maybe this new one won't last long and Mr. S will come back!

                      Dai everyone.

                      • kk: It seems like the luck is not on your side with the computer. Hopefully that changes.

On Friday, our band hosted an alumni band. The piccolo player let me try to play her piccolo. (I play flute.) It was tons of fun. I've never played a piccolo before and I could play a far range of notes for the first time.

Saturday was the Homecoming Dance. It was really good. The music was mostly good. I just wish they would have played more group songs. My friends and I went together as a group and had a lot of fun.

The best news is ... last week I got accepted into the School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh!!!!

                        • Friday was an In-service for me. I got to stay home and finish my books and draw fanart. Everything was good until today... In orchestra I nearly melted with boredom. We are still working on D major, so I'm VERY bored.

Ok, something totally off topic. Has anyone read Here There be Dragons? Just a question, because the third book in the Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica comes out tomorrow in the US. Yay! I've been waiting for this book for... I think a year.

                          • Oh my gosh...

Mona: No, actually, I think life just has it's own way of working out...

                            Like today...

I'm at church, in the auditorium. Just about an hour ago, there was a guy here, replacing lightbulbs, batteries, etc. He goes to turn off all the lights, and when he comes back, he trips on the power cord for my computer, which unplugs.

I was all, "Are you okay? I'm so sorry! I shouldn't have left the computer on!" etc, etc.

He freaks out, because he thinks he's killed my computer. I kept reassuring him that it was fine (actually, it looked dead; it had absolutely no battery power left when it unplugged).

But he left, saying he was sorry, and I said the same, and that conversation ended.

I plugged the AC adapter back into the computer, and was shocked that the computer is still on, instead of dead. Then I get a pop-up message: "Plugged in: Charging," and the battery power meter starts increasing.

I freaked out. For about fifteen minutes. That was a completely insane statement. I mean, oh my gosh, the guy fixed the computer by tripping on the power cord. How ridiculous is that?

I will forever be in his debt, I decided. Maybe I'll help him with changing lightbulbs one week...

It's like a debasement of science, logic, and generally everything else. I'm happy, though.

                            And so, life goes on.

For some reason the battery only charged to 99% full, but I think that's good enough.

                            Dai!!
