  • Hey guys! Welcome to the YW forums.
I like straightjackets. Straightjackets are good. They tend to keep you out of to much trouble.

So... I think you need a spare... or two. *hands out more*
    I like chocolate... and steak.
*sets chocolate and steak on a small table that is not a buffet table.

Time passes. Even when it seems impossible.
Even when each tick of the second hand aches like the pulse of blood behind a bruise.
It passes unevenly, in strange lurches and dragging lulls, but pass it does. Even for me.

What type of brownies? Chocolate, fudge, dark chocolate, or the rare white chocolate brownies?

                    • Waving a cheery hello to all the folks hereabouts. I'm an admirer of Ms. Duane's work, and consider the Young Wizards series in particular to be a genuinely great classic of children's literature, worthy of as much acclaim as Rowling's Harry Potter. Deep Wizardry in particular with its unflinching portrayal of death and sacrifice deserves much more heraldry than the books are presently getting. Perhaps there is something constructive the fans who have discovered this series can do about that.

I am a herpetologist and zookeeper by profession, and sometimes a grumpy old codger at the end of my day at the reptile museum. If asked nicely I can produce lovely pictures of the creatures I work with, which are mainly venomous snakes and crocodilians with an occasional sideline of large furry carnivore, mostly the big cats. My specialty is rescue, rehabilitation and veterinary research. Venomous snakes and crocodilians, even in zoos, don't always get the hands-on care and examination they really need to stay healthy, so the wizardry I work in the real world is teaching people safe and humane ways to handle them for veterinary care. I do love the scaly things and my mission in life is to see that they get the good care and gentle handling that they deserve.

I think that the very best way to be a wizard in service to Life is not just to read fantasy books and dream about magic, though that can certainly be a good thing if it inspires you. To make magical things happen for real, you have to work and study and learn how stuff works in this world, and then go out and make it happen. Sometimes that means studying harder real-world books that are not nearly as much fun as Diane Duane's novels, and that don't work like a magic wizard's manual, but the end result is worth it!

                      • Welcome TanithT to the forums. We generally agree here about the quality of these books as we're all member of her forum.

We range here in age, interests, and pretty much anything else, but are all slightly crazy and enjoy the stories of magic if not more.

If you want to get to know the members the Topic of Great Randomness (TOGR) would be a place to learn about us. Otherwise here's a straightforward forum.

*wave* and enjoy yourself, and participate in conversations, we need more discussions about the books and new members tend to help with that as we're waiting for new books.
We will remember you PM. And your little GingerBear.

Welcome to the lovely forum. Interesting profession you have. I shall like to see these pictures you speak of.

Like Tuttle said, we're all different ages in these forums so we can get a little insane. *Hands you a straightjacket* Just in case.

Anyway, welcome, and I hope to see you around!!

                            • Thanks for the welcome. I will wait to post images here until I have the time to read and fully understand the site policies on such things. I do have a blog with lots of pictures, but since it contains the occasional strong language I'm not going to link to any area of my blog including the completely g-rated picture galleries unless I'm sure it's okay. There's nothing very naughty on the blog, but it's not written with kids in mind and I do vent on it occasionally in uncensored language. Also most of my galleries contain images of snakes eating food (eg, other animals), and some people would consider that disturbing.

I'm erring on the side of caution for now, and will read more thoroughly when I have time, but if an older hand here would be kind enough to enlighten me on the policies it would speed the process of pretty critter picture sharing.

                              • Heh. You have an even more interesting web presence than I do, Tanith. I've never made a major national newspaper. :-)

As far as posting pictures goes, it's ok in small doses. For larger doses, you might want to try something like http://flickr.com/groups/youngwizards.

There's a dormant The Person Behind the Avatar thread -- if there's interest, I can unlock it.

"You are the most insolent child I have ever had the misfortune to teach." "Thank you."
