Snort. Being a Canuck is no excuse for feeling left out. Worldcon's in Montreal in 2009. The easiest way for a fandom to get together: have a party at Worldcon. (grin). DD's gonna be there, anyway....

Now there's definitely incentive to take a gap year between high school and uni. Discworld con! WorldCon! And I haven't been to Montreal in a while.

Still not sure if a gap year's that great of an idea though, even if I would finally get to meet you guys (and there's the lure of a road trip with a bunch of friends- drive down the Trans-Canada!).
Hmm. If I go to UWaterloo, that's pretty close to Montreal...

I vote WorldCon '09 because Montreal is exactly five hours and forty minutes by car for me, so it's fairly convenient...in fact, I might go there over spring break this year. Also Montreal is gorgeous.

Boston would also be sweet for me (barely two hours away), but inconvenient for a lot of people, I think.

And what about Tui! We'll have to raise money to get her over here from NZ

I like kli6's idea of Worldcon 2008, because, as I was saying earlier, Colorado's in the middle, and so therefore easier for some people. I'm also excited to actually meet you people, and I think everone's up for the idea now. If we put it off to much, not everyone is going to be as up for it. Also, it's an incentive for DD to atend it as well!

I'm Canadian too. So there you go, Wolfy. At least two people are Canadians. And I live right next to Montreal, in Cote-St-Luc, which is on the same island.
And it would take a while to get from here to Colorado.

Hey! My name is Wolf Wizard, not Wolfy! and I wasn't focusing on how the majority of people were from the US, I just added it as an after thought. I said North America, and last time I checked, Canada was in North America. I just said Colorado as an idea, not as something permenant . Maybe I should change my posts to Minnesota, or somewhere farther up, to suit the Canadians. There, happy? I included you specifically, so stop saying i'm ignoring people from different countries.

Ehnn...Colorado is definitely not in the geographic center of the USA; it's more in the western half of the country. Or really any center of the USA, except maybe one of the skiing centers of the country. Just saying.

I actually love the idea of a YW convention; it'd be so fun to meet some of you guys in person. Of course, there's the whole problem with many parents (including mine) not being ok with meeting people from online. I don't know...I'd love it, but there's pretty much no way I'd go to one. Especially if it was out in Colorado.

I think one of the major practical problems with a YW-based convention itself is the makeup of the fanbase :P with most people being teenage, it's slightly hard to board a plane and go off to anywhere. Harry Potter gets around this by having a lot more fans, but even then, most of the people that are going to cons and celebrating Potter are those above 18.

That being said, I think going to one of the WorldCons would be a great starting point. Denver's a bit far from me, though doable; Montreal is better for me, personally, but probably worse for the ones out west.

The question is, how many people actually have the a. resources and b. permission (disregard if you're over 18) to go to a con?

OK, Like I said, I was just saying one of the random states that popped into my head. So stop attacking me for it . I would have the resources , but as seabiscuit said with parents, mine would definetely not be OK with me meeting people who I met online. There's probably no chance that I would have of actually going . And this is probably one of the main problems for people in this forum, as well as the fact that not as many older people like the YW series.

What about Iowa? It's pretty much in the middle of the U.S., and Canada as well. It's also farther North in the U.S. so you three Canadian people would be happy with that, and it's far enough South in the U.S. for people in California, and other people in the South would be satisfied as well.

Although there aren't exactly any famous DD-worthy places in Iowa that I know of, I'm sure we can compensate.

That's my two U.S. cents as far as a state.

I like the idea of Iowa, though as I stated before, the likeliness of me going is slim. I doubt that it is settled once and for all, because then the people in Canada will probably want it in Canada and start attacking me again,*glares* but I think your idea is really good.

*hands raised as if I was being arrested* Hey, hey, don't say that, we all know that the US is more famous than Canada. Anyways would you do a party where there are only 3 members, or where there are over 20 members? (forgive me, I don't know exactly how many members are in the US)

Anyway, what does everyone else think of Iowa? Do the Canadians agree? I think that would be an OK driving distance. It would take quite a few hours, but oh well, it would probably be worth it, especially if you also went on vacation there during that time...
