A Young Wizards Convention

I'm glad that I've (somewhat ) created peace over the location argument.

I really did put in a lot of thought from many different angles, and it just seems as though Iowa, or a state very near there, would be the best solution.

Any other suggestions?

Minneapolis. I know the folks who put on cons in that town, and it's always one terrific party if the con's in Minneapolis. In fact, Fourth Street's been resurrected, and I'd be seriously tempted, if it weren't for the MdDS thang. (sigh). Some of my best convention memories ever are of Fourth Street Fantasy: a convention small enough that when you raise your hand to ask a question in a panel, you can get called on by name.

But yeah, Worldcon's probably the best basis for a YW get together, because it's equal opportunity. In the USA every other year, it hops about and moves, so everybody will eventually get one close to them, and DD always plans to attend. The only problem, as Sean's mentioned, would be money. Worldcon memberships are typically around $100 for attending, and there's the travel and hotel bucks to consider.

The other thing, of course, is that if DD ever does a signing tour, we can show up for that. Regional gatherings.

I remember when I was part of Dorothy Dunnett fandom, and we had I Spit East (NYC) and I Spit West (San Francisco). The gatherings were called "I Spit"s because the first two gatherings sort of happened simultaneously and Dunnett had written a book where the first words were: "Men in bifocal glasses. I spit." and one of the fans who wanted to go to both of the gatherings said: "Fans in bicoastal conventions. I spit."

Maybe you guys just need to practice going to sf conventions. Find your local. Drag your parents along. Volunteer if you can't afford the gate fee. That's how I first hit the circuit. Sheer dumb luck my local was Comic-Con.

Please, that might be the worst question to ask. Do you want more arguments or less? Anyway, *pauses to look on google Earth where Iowa is*, Iowa seems to be more to the East of central USA, which is actually better for me, since I live in Earth, North America, Canada, Québec, Cote-St-Luc. I think it should be in New York, since that's where the books take place in the first place, and the movie.. (and it's also my only chance of actually seeing it)

I agree that it should be in New York eventually, but there a re some people here who wouldn't be able to make it if it was. I still think that Iowa would be best, at least for a first one, and then eventually we could move it up to New York. That was the original idea, but it's just that it would be so hard for everyone here to attend it.

I know this is kinda random, but i'm in despreate need of help. First off, none of ya have heard of me cuz i'm new (stating the obvious, i know) but i would greatly appreciate if someone would reply to this question as soon as possible. Throughout the books, the Lone Power is never named directly (as in names like what we have). He is always called by one of "his" names such as Star Snuffer, Lone Power, etc... But I'm starting to write a fanfic (please don't not reply because of that ) Anyways, I need names that are fitting to the Lone Power other than his normal titles. Please, please, please reply as fast as you can! *puppy dog face, on hands and knees bgging*

So, yeah Sayosia. welcome to the forums! even if you used the "back door" as I would call it, instead of the "front door"- where newbies are meant to post, declaring their arrival, but everyone likes a suprise every now and then. I hate it whenever I don't have time to be on my computer for a couple days and then people register and start posting everywhere before I even get to tell them the rules.

So. Back to the convention.

New York seems to be the best place in terms of relating to the book (and easy for DD to get to... if there was a convention about her books, I'm sure she'd go). However, it seems as thought somewhere in Iowa would be a good place for us US residents (and those Canadians who keep trying to change our decision so it's closer to them ) because of it being Northern and pretty much in the middle horizontally.

Hmmm. Apparently I sent teh New Member one first, assuming that you had already done so... I hope she doesn't get to confused. It's OK, I'm going to be gone for a while starting tommorow, so I am trying to say stuff here before I go and everyone forgets me.

Iowa would be best, and I think that we shouldn't move it much farther North, as the Canadians will keep trying to do that, and pretty soon it won't be as close to the center of things. But, as I said before, we COULD begin to move it into New York later on. or, we could just do one in different regions, but I don't think that would be as fun as seeing the majority of people in the forums.

A YW convention would be sooo much fun, but in reality, you have to consider that most of us on this site are of the high school age. Who's parents are seriously going to let us all go somewhere and meet people we met online? There's all those stories on the news about people who go meet people they met online and end up dead.

I hate to be the party pooper here, but it's something we need to consider. Before we actually plan a convention, we need to know how many people are going to be able to go. After all, what we end up doing would be completely different if we had 100 people going versus like, 20 people.

We're just talking about this to discuss something other than TTOGR, the books, and the movie. Something different, and DOES have to do with Youngwizards.

Hey, this sounds wicked and all ... Like, I'd totally want to go and all that jazz. See you all. Kinda of strange thinking about that, albeit.

But what about people who live in difference continents? Maybe like some people IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN ON THIS TINY LITTLE ISLAND CALLED AMERICAN SAMOA? Not, to you know, sound dissapointed that you are thinking about Iowa... Iowa rocks, seriously, one of the best bands are from there ... But, you see what I'm getting at?

Christmas, I give you points for bringing that up. Most of us who have been here for a while have had their parents kinda see what and who is around .. I know mine have. xD My mom used to talk to some of you back in the days of Chat.

People in Europe, NZ, Down Under? Whatta 'bout them? A difference convention for different Hemispheres/Continents/Countries? I could see one in NZ/Aus. A fair bit of reader's down there.

Has DD ever done a book signing tour? I cannot remember if she has or not?

I don't think it would be all that dangerous...I mean, meeting someone one on one can be bad, but something as public as a convention, where you are surrounded by other people, some of whom are really who are really friends? You won't exactly be all that far from help at any given point. The biggest threat is falling. (not that falling is to be taken lightly. Being trampled by teenagers is hardly a good thing!)
