Well, I'm assuming DD's run in with the flu is what pretty much ate up any idea of a chat in November. And the holidays might eat up December. But I'm sure she or Lee will announce another one at some point.

She did, however, blog about how she and Peter Morwood are going to be at the Discworld Convention, which is why I suggested it as a possible starting point.

Yeah. Meeting your favourite authors at conventions they're attending anyway is much easier than organising a convention specially. For one, you only have to organise yourself enough to get to the convention concerned.

Yes, but how many of us are organized enough to get ourselves together? Not to mention the fact that you would meet more people (actually, people who care a lot more than the average person about the YW series) for sure, if it was organized specially.

I think it'd be cool to talk among the members, just, well, start some forum topics verbally, while just hanging out.

I can just picture everyone (or I could if I knew what everyone looks like) just talking freely, except calling each other by our YW forums usernames. I wonder what a normal person would think if they walked into a supposedly typical conversation, and overheard names like Wolf Wizard, or Lazy Leopard, or Kli6.

I agree, it would be SO much fun! Another bonus with speaking verbally would be that we would get to know each other a little better , get off topic , actually have a conversation , instead of adding comments hours apart , and say short phrases if we didn't have much to say .

Yeah!!!!!!! I am now a member!
What's wrong with the name Wolf Wizard? I don't want to change myself by calling myself by a different name!

I think it is a good idea. I would never be able to make it to New York because I live in California and let me tell you how expensive plane tickets are. The only problem is we don't want any...Oh I don't know pedophiles to show up. The good thing is I trust pretty much everyone at this site. But I do think it would be awesome if we all could get together. Just think about all of the Young Wizards discussions we could have!

You think those are bad? what about Vashmata?!? Anyway, think it would be cool to talk to people, but I'm way too lazy to get out of my house . If everyone had Skype like I do (it's free), we could either talk or chat using its superb features. On Skype you can even play games with other friends, like battleship and chinese checkers.
Hey look, I'm starting to write more! I guess it comes from posting a lot.

What?!!! Why does every one insist Wolf Wizard is a bad name?! uhhh...*looks for something more to say so doesn't get yelled at for one- line or off- topic response*
Maybe we could meet somewhere in the middle of the country, like in Colorado or somewhere, that way, everyone would be able to acess it easier, rather than in New York, which is FAR away from people who live in places like California.

If a normal person walked into a typical conversation, it wouldn't be taking place at a Young Wizard's convention! And Wolf Wizard is a fine name. I wouldn't mind being called by my username, since it's my nickname anyways when there are other people with my normal name around (though no one ever seems to remember to call me by the nickname, which defeats the whole purpose buy oh well ) And Rhi sounds normal enough, I suppose.

Yes, a convention would be awesome, but hard to get to as well, especially with airline prices being as high as they are. I have no idea where to even begin in trying to work out the logistics of where and when and how to hold a convention...*strains brain*...ouch, that hurts, don't make me think on a Friday!

HA!!!!!!!!Someone actually likes my name! If only airline prices weren't so high!*Ponders unhappily* Well... maybe first we could start with a chat, and insure everyone knows when it is.

I don't mean a bad name, i mean a name that people don't use to name their children.
And what about skype? you can always test it at least. It's pretty good. If you wanna add me, you guessed it, my username is Vashmata.

If your idea is to set up a chat thing there, I think that some of the people here wouldn't trust it as much, and it would be harder to let everyone know where and when it was. No, I think it would be much easier on this website, as long as someone will monitor it...

Personally, I would not mind being called by my username, although the 78 would get annoying after a while, then it might not be my favorite number anymore...I'd probably just go by Ash

Meeting half-way is a pretty smart idea, but what about people who do not live in the U.S.(not that this concerns me)
I have an idea...although I doubt it would ever work. Anyway, if there was a poll, everyone could either choose from a list of locations or add their own (or a location near them)and then the majority would win, or DD could pick...or we could have a bunch of little conventions all over the place;never mind, then we wouldn't get to meet everyone from the east coast to the west coast and everywhere in between (plus other places not in North America*Don't look at me like that* Like I said, it would probably never work.(plus, airline prices would still be high )
I just hope we can figure it out and get the real thing set up...that would be totally awesome

Forget the infernal airplanes!! Just take a train. Much more luxurious and safe. And cheaper. And more functional; you can get up, move around, go from car to car, dining car, sleeping car, some trains have observation cars.... You're not confined to your seat or the minuscule bathroom like you are in an airplane.

Location, location, location.... I honestly don't know a location. What about Boston, MA? That's great for us New Englanders, since it's kind of the middle of New England, but as other people have pointed out, the people of the West Coast matter, too, and people overseas. I have a feeling, though, that most people would come over the Atlantic and to the East Coast of the U.S., rather than over the Pacific and to the West Coast. Just a feeling I have.

But why the United States? How about we travel to India? While I'm there I can visit my friend Vandana from Dell Tech Support.

The poll idea sounds like a pretty good idea to me, but I still think in-between would be best . Maybe we could take everone's preferable location, and find an area that is in the center of all of them . that way, it should be resonably close for the majority of people (in North America) . That way for those people if they couldn't afford to travel via airplane, they could go be car ?*shrugs* and for the people in other continents, if there are enough fans in them, maybe we could set one up there as well, or they could try to travel here . But I think we ought to try to set one up in North America as well, before we move it to different continents, because I assume there are more fans in North America then in any other continent (at least on this forum?) though I suppose I may be bias in that assumption .(the only Location parts of people's usernames that I actually know is on the Earth are in the US). So, I agree with Ash78, and probably the majority of the members here , when I say if this really is set up, it would be reallyawesome!!!!!
