  • I don't really count myself as a Trek fan, though I love Janeway and Picard, but I enjoyed the new movie.

Now pretty much any other SF except Trek and Star Wars in which I'm interested at all, I fangirl. *g*
Las Vegas Boulevard is jammed, and I'm in love...

You guys are ridiculous. Me of course, I'll go and boast anytime about my location and Philadelphia and such... this is starting to sound kind of like an outrageous thing, and the outrageous things were have are plenty... but I need to mention the Philadelphia Mummers. <3

One google on your part and then it's enough said.

(SilveredBlue you posted twice! What on earth did you mess up? lol)

Duuuuude dragons are coooool. I love dragons myself, as well. I have awesome dragon figurines. A boyfriend of mine even got me a dragon shirt for Christmas one year. ^_^

bookgirl- I do watch some anime, and I'm actually listening to an anime song (sung in japanese) right now, but I don't know anything compared to someone who knows even just a little. I used to watch two shows, which I would LOVE re-discovering in .wav format (HINT!), they're Tenchi Muyo! and Sailor Moon. =P

      Trekkers = Original Series
      Trekkies = Next Generation

As for the movie, I thought it was cool, and as for the new fans... I don't know WHAT they're calling themselves, except *MEANWORD* bandwagon fans. My friend suggested this word though, which I think is cute...

She wasn't an OS fan, or a TNG or VGR or anything else fan, but she loves the new movie and is slowly learning... so she's a Trekling! Get it?! Like a sapling?! Teehee.

      • We didn't do anything really special for special days at school. Just the standard Crazy Hat day, pyjama day, twin/triplet day, etc. But the first elementary/junior high I was in celebrated the Carnaval de Quebec every year, so that was cool. It's a cultural thing celebrating Quebec's history, but we were in a school where we learned classical French. It was fun, though, 'cuz everyone brought in an ice block and we made ice sculptures. We also had maple syrup made and drizzled on snow, and we were allowed to eat it. It was SO good.

If I could suggest some manga/anime: Fruits Basket is good, so is High School Debut, Paradise Kiss, and Skip Beat!

I saw Motley Crue this week, they were good. It was my first non-Christian concert, and there was weed and cigarette smoke EVERYWHERE. It was still fun, though. I also just finished a bunch of physics homework. Can't wait til next year when I don't have to take anymore physics.

        • We got sooo much snow.
I have never seen my home get more than 3-4 inches at most. Or rather. my dad says I did, when I was little, but I say that if I can't remember it, it doesn't count.
I just went out side and kept rolling around in it. Then I just laid there, face up, and let the snow fall. It was nice and relaxing. And cold, of course. But totally awesome.
Too bad it was really fine, and not much good for snowmen of snow balls. I really wanted to build a Calvin and Hobbes snow men army draped over my car. Which I had to dig out twice. Once this morning, and then again this morning after the snow plow came.
I really really like snow, but only when I don't need to go anywhere or dig my car out.

Is there a middle ground for Star Trek fans? I'm not really a trekkie or a "trekker" (which I think sounds amusing for some reason), but I have been watching it since I was little because my dad was a fan. I grew up on Star Trek, Quantum Leap, Sliders, Mystery Science Theater 3000, and Sea Quest.
So I'm not really a trekkie, but I am not a bandwagon fan. Treklet? Trekked? Or just silly for putting this much thought into it?
Darn it. I can't remember the other thing I wanted to ask since I got distracted by The Simpsons. I'll come back to it eventually.

          • crazybookworm: Quebec! I love Quebec! I went there with an extra school trip for French students. It was so much fun. That's actually where I want to move when I finish college, or if they have a good college there when I go to college (if it isn't too expensive).

I had a mock judging on my contest piece on Monday and according to that judge I will get a gold..... but I only played the better half of my piece and she isn't a piano judge she's a vocal judge. I am freaking out about this contest but it helps that I will probably have a few people there to cheer me on.

If you like dragons I suggest reading the Pern books by Anne McCaffrey they are good short reads. And I have an entire Dragon lover's guide to Pern to show how much I like it.

            • No. It was worse.

Oh and for you trekkies, (or trekkers, which according to my coworker that is what they prefer to be called now) what did you think of the new Star Trek movie?
Eh. There were good things and bad things about it. I thought it was a good story, but I didn't like that the bridge designs were so far off what we were used to. And now that I think about it, the timeline for "The Cage" would have been a bit screwed up by the choices they made. Did the Enterprise not visit Talos IV in this timeline, or was Spock still Pike's first officer, but returned to the Academy to teach?

              • lol. that last skit is awesome.

Eek, five days until my huge concerto competition! I'm nervous and excited at the same time.

Speaking of music: My Saturday was totally exhausting. I left the house at 8 am to get to a trio rehearsal, then spent the time until luch hunting for a dress for the competition. Five stores, and zip.
Then came concerto rehearsal with my accompanist (sp?) from 2-3, then one more desperate stop at a store. Where, of course, we found promptly two dresses that would work. All in all, didn't get home until 4, whereupon I conked out on the couch for an hour. I NEVER do that usually- I was totally exhausted. But anyway...I couldn't help giggling when we went past the stores with very bright colors, because it reminded me of Filif.
"Who's Victoria? And what's its secret?" (WH)

My dad played a math trick on me this morning....he was helping me figure out functions, and he set me this problem to do:
(g{k[f(b+1)]}) where f and k and g all have certain values (like f(x)= 2x^2-3x. It looks really long, yeah? So I was going along, working from the inside out, putting in the values and keeping my negatives straight, and looking up at my dad for approval once every so often...and he kept smirking. Here's a bit of our recurring conversation:
me: "What? Why are you smiling?"
                Dad: "Nothing. Just keeping going."

So I finally get to the end and am ready to put in what g equals, when I look for g's value and it says: g=5. Which meant that WHATEVER was in the parantheses always was 5. He could have put 5% of 7x^3 times 150x divided by 6j and it still would have been 5. Uggg. I spent 5 minutes in a useless exersise. hah.

Okay, so maybe this is amusing to mathematicians out there....sorry to everyone else for the long stories. I'll be quiet now.

Oh, I just watched Star Trek for the first time ever! I'm so excited! Then my brother came along and changed the channel to hockey. Phooey. I saw about half of a TNG episode, but it was Star Trek all the same!

                    • NickRyan: Come to Canada for school! University is anywhere from $6000 to $15 000 (I'm high balling here) per year here. It's cheaper here 'cuz education's public, so everyone pays a bit for it, resulting in lower costs overall!

                      • Crazybookworm: What do the universities specialize in? I want to go into a science field but I don't know which one. Do they teach in French there or in English? If it is in French I probably can't go there because I can't speak or listen fluently (at least not yet maybe in three years when it's time for college I will be able to).

I'm sick It sucks so much. I had the worst headache I've ever had today and I felt dizzy all day. I went to school but then left before first period was over. I have to get all my work tomorrow and that includes a project yuck.

                        • NickRyan: The Universite du Quebec looks like it specialises in a bunch of different programs, but it will all be taught in French, as Quebec is the only place in Canada where it's usually spoken. The French also won't be like the classical French taught in school, it will be Canadian French, so it will have a bunch of slang and different meanings.

I think the universities up here are all pretty well-rounded, and the university I go to has a pretty good science program with a bunch of different programs. I don't know what I want to specialise in yet, so I'm taking a bunch of general science pre-requisites in general science, but mostly the ones for biochemistry and pharmacology, since that's what I'm leaning towards. I'll take a bunch more pre-requisites for both next year, and will specialise in one or the other in my third year.

I also just looked up tuition costs for international students at my university, and costs are anywhere from $23 000 to $26 500 USD, but that's all your living costs and tuition. That's nothing compared to the almost $50 000 to go to Harvard with all your living costs and tuition, which is slightly ridiculous.

If you come to Canada, though, you're going to have to be ready to brave the cold. The place where I live was the coldest place in the world one day, with a temperature of -48*C. My advice is to bundle up, and you'll be okay.

I'm sorry you're sick. Feel better soon!

                          • My parents just got me a page a day calender of phrases in French. I have to go through all of January and the first day of February while looking at them all.

Crazybookworm: I might have a difficult time learning if it is all in French but I don't know, like I said I might be fluent in a few years but the slang might be hard to learn. I am taking basic biology this year and basic chemistry and zoology next year just to see what I want to specialize in. As for the cold I love cold weather, when we went over the summer everyone was freezing and I was dressed like I would be here (except for when we went whale watching). Ya that is a lot cheaper than most colleges here unless it's an instate public college.

I'm feeling better now, I hope I will feel well enough in the morning to go to school because with my classed I can't afford to miss any more school or I will be so behind.

                            • NickRyan: There's a lot of other universities here too, just not necessarily in Quebec.

That's smart to do. I took biology as a "fun" course 'cuz I was so sure I was going into engineering. It saved my butt, 'cuz if I hadn't taken biology, chemistry, and physics, my options for what I want to do would be really limited.

That's good you're feeling better. In honors courses, I assume? I was in Advanced Placement courses, and if you missed a day, you were screwed.

                              • Honestly, unless you are looking for an in-state public college, you are looking at about $20,000 per year, if not more, at least in the US. I can't speak for Canadian schools though. I go in-state, and its almost $4,000 a semester. If you live on campus it is usually about $3,000 per semester. I have friends who go out of state, and it is about $9k for them per semester, not including room and board.
But if you start now, there are lots of scholarships to be found. It takes some work, but the more you apply for, the more you are likely to receive. I'd suggest applying for any that you are applicable for, even if it isn't a lot. It could at least cover books. Which helps when textbooks are one hundred a pop and you have five classes. :/

We had classes canceled yesterday, but not today. Not even a delay. I drove to campus, and the roads near campus were covered in about two inches of ice. It was ridiculous. If I didn't wear my hiking boots with good traction I would have spent a lot of time on my bum. We are supposed to get some slushy mix tonight, which means more frozen roads tomorrow. Yay. Or not.
                                But I love the snow!
