    • one of them told us--when I was in fifth grade--that Muslims worshiped the devil.
Somebody told me this to my face the other day - I mean, they told me that I worshipped the devil because I was atheist. (Actually, I think I said "Yeah, I'm atheist" and they said, quite seriously and in very offended tones, "so you worship the devil, then?") It's unbelievable the level of ignorance there is, even in NZ which is practically the most atheist country in the world. *le sigh*

It can be frustrating being too liberal for the company you find yourself in. My mildly useless advice is... if at all possible, find different company, because it's just not worth the energy convincing a majority of people who disagree with you by yourself, and you'll just get down. Not that you shouldn't protest when something is wrong, I mean, of course you should, but... I dunno, avoid becoming hugely emotionally invested in your ability or inability to convince people around you. </worldly-wise 18 year old>

and if you really care about the welfare of others, then go for it. i'm not saying it'll be easy, but it will be worth it. i mean saving a life, how awesome is that? if you fail once, there will be guilt, but think of how many you saved!!! saving a life is priceless. and to answer the many questions you have, the only way to find out is to try.

          • peri: what's with designing a t-shirt??

Anyway, actually I don't really understand what's the link between atheism and worshipping the devil. Aren't they 2 different things altogether, except for the fact that the people do not worship God?

However, I feel that it is up to the individual about whom or what him/her wants to worship or believe in, as long as him/her does not hurt others in the course of his/her actions. So, if this is the case, why are poeple so against the devil? He is not the opposite of God, and not worshipping the God does not make people worship him. (I did not mean to say that atheists worship the devil or God. Sorry for the mis-explanation) Everything has its good and bad points, so IF people worship him for the good points, I don't really see the harm in that.

People have the right to do what they want, and believe what they believe in, as long as their actions or the course of the action does not hurt others, whether physically or mentally.

            • What's up doc?, Atheists don't believe in God or the Devil, so it's ridiculous to say we worship either of them. Tui was talking about people's ignorance.

At least one historical Christian sect worshipped the Devil. It made sense to them (no, they weren't Satanists or whatever). It doesn't make sense to atheists to worship a non-existent creature.

              • People shouldn't make such comments unless they know what they're talking about. *sniff* They just make idiots out of themselves when they say things like that.

Of course, if I say anything about my personal faith, I'll offend somebody (again), so I won't say anything beyond this: People have the right to believe in whatever they choose. That doesn't mean that I agree with or am particularly happy with their choice. It also doesn't give anybody the right to think any less of them as people.

Ooo. Garth Nix. I've just read Sabriel, Lireal, and Abhorsen, and I loved 'em. I haven't read his other books. I have wayyy too many books to read. Okay, not too many, I just need to stop staring blankly at the computer and actually _read_.

I got a Relient K cd. It's amazing. *grin* Sadie Hawkins Dance is an _amazing_ song. I got it 'cause my little bro had to find a specific Bible for school... Gracious. Anybody seen how many Bibles there are? Like, tons. And tons. And, of course, the one he had to have was uber-expensive. It was thirty or forty bucks. *sigh* Well, I wasn't the one paying for it.

My parents went out to eat, so I got to watch my little brother. We watched Sky High and the Avatar movie that was on tv. Oh, and we ate popcorn. I ate a bit too much...hehe.

                    • I have no idea why people who call themselves Satanists worship him. (To be fair, I'm not really that clear on why people worship anyone else, either.)

The old Christian sect held that Lucifer (which translates to Light-bearer or maybe Light-maker, as in "Let there be light") was the one who created the Earth at the start of Genesis, and that God was a usurper who took the credit and banished Lucifer to Hell.

and if it was my place, i might explain why i belive in what i do...maybe then you'd get it. but alas, tis not my place. and if i did explain, i have a very strong feeling you woud not want to listen...for whatever reason it may be. and a note; i may act like a shallow idiot, but that is an insult. in truth i am a very deep idiot. dai stiho cousins,

                        • My understanding was that most Satanists don't actually worship Satan, but more sort of worship themselves - Wikipedia says "Satanism generally focuses upon material or physical advancement of the self with guidance from external higher beings or external principles, instead of submission to a deity". The confusion with the Christian idea of Satan is common but mistaken.

It's what the quote says - focusing on material and physical advancement of the self. The idea is focusing on yourself instead of on, say, what some mythical diety supposedly wants.
