I can't speak for Hornblower, but like Aubrey, Cochrane sent a candle off on a barrel to evade an enemy, captured a much bigger Spanish frigate before being promoted to post-captain, and was sentenced to the pillory because of being used as a pawn in a stock trading scandal.

Le Guin, Pierce, Alexander, Moon, Tepper, Lynn, Modesitt, others

My favorite series with magic for teens and younger are:

        Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea series.

Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic and Tortall series.

Lloyd Alexander's books, especially the Chronicles of Prydain. (Where my nick comes from)

I loved Harry Potter but they don't re-read well, for me.

These are for teens and up:

        Elizabeth Moon's Paksenarrion series.

Elizabeth Lynn's Chronicles of Tornor and Dragon's Winter / Dragon's Treasure.

Sherri S. Tepper's True Game series.

Also L.E. Modisett's books, in particular the series about Recluce and the adult series about Ghosts, which I like despite the fact that his writing is formulaic.

I still enjoy all these books even though I'm almost 50.

Here are some books for older readers -- too much violence / sex / squick for younger folks -- that I also like a lot:

#1 Jo Walton's books--King's Name and King's Peace especially. I also liked her book on dragons and her recent "Still Life with Fascists" series set in an alternate England that made peace with Hitler and lived to regret it.

        DD's Tales of the Five

Hyemeyohsts Storm's Seven Arrows (definitely not for young readers)

And I gobble up Jim Butcher's (Harry Dresden) and Kim Harrison's books, and several other similar series. I like Butcher's and Harrison's the best of those because they are about flawed people trying to know how to do the right thing.

In fact, I think that that is what all these books have in common. It's the Spiderman theme: "With great power goes great responsibility."

Well, most people have great power in some way. Magic makes that power easier to see.

The other thing many have in common is respect for the power of words. I make my living writing and editing. The in-between places when the words aren't coming, and the relief when they do, seems to me to have a lot in common with magic.

Taran, were you aware that Jim Butcher wrote a Spiderman novel? It's really really fun, and Butcher said that he was especially proud that he managed to squeeze a Secret Wars callback in there for the other Marvel comics fans. It's a nice companion on the shelf with DD's Spiderman books.

I guess I did know that, but I have not read it. I have not read DD's Spiderman books either. At some point, I thought I knew who the Marvel characters were and did not want for them to change anymore.

I may change my mind--the current series of Marvel films really works for me.

I love DD's Star Trek Books, though. That series I don't mind getting deeper. Her books on the Rhiannsu and John Ford's on the Klingons were just wonderful.

My favorite series...well I'm not too big into series lately, but I really like anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I like Paradise Lost, I like Pride and Prejudice, I love the book Little Brother, T.A. Barron is good, HP is decent. I don't mind Twilight, but I'm not super into it. The book Identical is really good, but a little disturbing. Conception is good. I just finished a book called Madapple that was very interesting, althought the end wasn't amazing. I can't think of any others right now, but if I remember others I'll mention them.
The Taiko Dodo and Mitten of Insanity
I promise not to funfun anymore

Hmm.. never heard of them. What're they about? I get the vampire part, but yeah.

I got four new books yesterday.... The one I'm reading definitely makes it onto my favorites list. It's titled THE NAME OF THIS BOOK IS SECRET. No, really. The beginning is hilarious, because the narrator keeps rambling on and on about how she/he can't tell you the story because it's secret. Then when it does move into the story, in one part the author put a whole bunch of ____s where the name of a street is supposed to be, because it's "secret." It gets sort of annoying...

The other three are titled Eon, The Princess and the Hound, and East. I really want to read them, but I'm already in the middle of three books right now.

OMG! I have read the Princess and the Hound, and I want to read Eon!

I have East but I've never read it before!

                      OMG!

And the Morganville Vampires is a good series. They are about vamps. Pretty much a girl who's young and smart and in collage in advance goes to this tiny town that ruled by vamps. She moves out of the dorm becuase of some bitches and goes to live in this house that is Protected. trouble and danger follow this girl, Claire, EVERYWHERE!

It's really good. I suggest you read it.

dark-angel: no, I haven't heard of them... what are they about?

Glede: you should read Eon! It's really good so far, now that I'm reading it. I haven't finished it though, so I can't tell you if it's good all the way through. I also got a recommendation from a friend of mine for East, saying it was really good.

                            Nightrunners

Yesterday, I picked up Shadows Return, the next book in Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunners series ("This is not a trilogy. This is not a trilogy. And the first person to ask if it's a pentalogy gets a silver Cross pen through the heart. (Just kidding, I really love that pen.)"), from Borders with one of my Christmas gift cards. So far, I don't like it as much as the earlier books, but I had that problem with the first in the series too. Hopefully, it'll get up to speed in another couple of chapters. :-)

I liked Traitor's Moon best of the original series, but you have to start at the beginning to really know what's going on. Also, the Tamir Triad explores an offhand reference in the first book in great detail. Flewelling has created a very rich and detailed world for us, and it's worth taking the time to explore.

Be warned: it's about as kid-safe as Diane's The Tale of the Five. :-)

You don't have way too many books you like! I have a few extremely long lists in this thread of all my favorite books... They include about a third of the books you've listed there and A LOT more.

I finished The Princess and the Hound yesterday. It was really good, and interesting. It's a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, except that the beast is the princess, so our "beauty" is a boy... It's very different from the original fairy tale, but for the better, in my opinion.
