  • Wow! Eep! *hides from the mod with a lightsabre*

You know, all my friends spell it as: lightsaber. *is seriously confused* Saber? Sabre? Sarbe? *passes out*

ZOMG. A prop from the movie! Did you get one?

*stares* Willy Wonka looks.....******** at the very least. Depp looks like a girl. Yes he does.

ZOMG TOM CRUISE WAS AUSTIN POWERS!

*sighs* IF we could be wizards.....

My cousin is fighting over whether to watch:

    Willy Wonka
    Stealth
    Sky High
    Fantastic Four
    Star Wars III
    The Island
    (end)

Sky High sounds pretty cool, but it doesn't seem very interesting. Same old storyline. Boring. Outcast kid discovers inner powers, and uses them to defeat evil (in another sense). The end. YAWN.

    That's basically it.

*yawn* *sigh* I think that's it.

    • I am SO seeing Willy Wonka as soon as I get home! Because besides having Johnny Depp, I just like that story. Well, I'll see it after I finish HP.
The shirt that I really want is one that says Spike Fangirl, but I don't know where to get it. One of my friends told me about it.
I might see Sky High just to laugh at it.

      • You know, I love Johnny Depp as much as the next girl, but he just doesn't look that much like Johnny Depp in the trailers and ads for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He just looks (and sounds) creepy and nasty.

Oh, and of course I have always hated that story, both the book (it's the only Dahl book I didn't like; in fact, I forgot he wrote it until I was recently reminded) and the original movie.

Tomorrow I'm going to see Fantastic Four and possible The Island.

And if you want to read an interesting interview about the decline of the movie industry, it's here. I thought it was pretty spot-on, but the fact that I dislike the vast (and I mean vast) majority of movies that have come out over the past...well...as long as I've been going to see movies might have something to do with it. If I complied a list of my real favorite movies, it would probably have more things like African Queen, His Girl Friday, The Big Country, and the Thin Man movies on it, than anything recent.

        • You don't like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!??!?! Weird. But I agree, he doesn't really look very much like the JD we know and love. He actually reminds me creepishly of Michael Jackson, which is not an association I want to make.

          • Yeah, but his Captain Jack Sparrow looks just the same in the clips of PoTC: Dead Man's Chest they showed us at Con. And (how's this for mind-blowing) it looks like Disney went all Cthulu for the villain in this one: a very squid-faced like Davey Jones.

              • I really don't think it's weird that I dislike Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. That's like saying it's weird that someone doesn't like SYWTBAW or Harry Potter. Different people have different tastes. I liked all the other Roald Dahl books that I read.

Pirates of the Carribbean: Dead Man's Chest

                Pirates of the Carribbean 3

I love that movie, and I'm definitely looking forward to the next two. I hope they do a decent job with them. And I agree, Jack Sparrow is one of Depp's best characters (although I did like him in Don Juan Demarco and also in Chocolat). He's also one of the if not the best character in that movie.

                • I am so freaked out by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, both the new one and the old one. That big tunnel in the old one? Yeah, that is a very creepy part of the movie. Johnny Depp scares me in the new one. He's just so, I don't know, he reminds me of my middle school principal, who is evil and I never wish to see again. But at the same time, I can't picture anyone else in the role except for Johnny Depp. I actually don't think Johnny Depp is that good an actor. I haven't liked any of his movies except for POTC. That's all I have to say.

                  • Hey I just saw the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Jonny Depp was good but the movie was just bizzare!!! I thought it was hilarious though, and my dad was cracking up during the whole movie. They do add some things that I think aren't in the book, but I did enjoy it, (or maybe it's just my insanity talking)*chuckles*

I was just looking at the cast list of the second POTC and Bootstrap Bill Turner is listed. COOL!!!!!!! Will's dad shows up.
bluesalamanders-I meant more that it was weird that you liked the rest of his books and didn't like that one. Plus Roald Dahl is just so lovable. I find his books hard not to like.

                      • POTC II is currently scheduled for July of next year, and I believe POTC III for the year after. Amazing innit, how early they can get stuff to us at Con? Bryan Singer brought along a bunch of footage from Superman Returns, and he's still in the middle of filming it! And it wasn't rough footage either. Fully scored, color-corrected, the works. (Admittedly, they stayed away from a lot of fx footage... )

BTW, if you want more Johnny Depp/Tim Burtony goodness, you just have to wait until The Corpse Bride is out in September. Leeetle animated Johnny Depp!

Oh, and for the Terry Gilliam fans out there, Apple's got the trailer for The Brothers Grimm up.

                        • Cress - Roald Dahl's books are lovable. He himself was not. I like that I can (usually) disassociate the artist from the art. (I only say that because I've known so many people who can't.)

And that's another thing about how I am, liking and disliking different things by the same author or artist. I tend to like songs, not singers; books, not authors; art, not artists. I have one CD by a group that I liked for awhile - I like that one cd (except for the last song, which I find dull) but their new one is boring and their old ones I just don't care for that much. I dislike Tom Cruise as a person but enjoy many of his movies. There is a famous author whose work I mostly hate, with the exception of one book, which I love.

Maybe it is weird, and it just seems normal to me because it's how I've been for as long as I remember. I almost never blanketly (is that a word?) like everything by one person.

Unfortunately, it occasionaly goes the other way... For example, I was introduced to Josh Hartnett in a movie I absolutely and completely hated ("O") and therefore I can't stand him and never watch any movies he is in. (Yes. Completely and utterly irrational. Believe me, I know.)

Have I babbled on enough yet....?

One final thing - I saw three movies in the theater recently (it is wretchedly hot and humid, so we go to movies to sit in the frigid AC):

Fantastic Four: Now that is a truly awful movie. Just - really, really bad. The special effects were fun, but the acting was not good and the script - and plot - were just terrible.

The Island: I don't know why that got as bad of reviews as I heard it did. I enjoyed it, as did my friends who I saw it with. It had a few flawed premises in the plot, but that's what suspension of disbelief is for, no?

March of the Penguins: It was sweet, pretty incredible to see what those birds do to survive and to breed, and I just like penguins. Plus, Morgan Freeman's voice is fantastic. Although at the beginning, when he started talking, I felt like I was watching Shawshank Redemption (now that is a truly wonderful movie) because it was him narrating.

Oh, and I am totally looking forward to The Corpse Bride.

                          • Yeah, I know what you mean. I meant Roald Dahl as an author not as a person. It seems odd that you'd like all of them but one, even if you don't tend to like all the things by one person.
I really want to see March of the Penguins. They looked SO cute.
I'm dying for Corpse Bride. I LOVE JD (could ya tell?) and I thought The Nightmare Before Christmas was really good. This looks really similar, so I have high hopes.
OH! O had Julia Stiles in it. I've only seen a little bit of it (had no idea what was going on) but I still like Julia Stiles.

                            • *shrug* There's only one book by John Steinbeck that I do like. I'm sure I could come up with other situations like that. I don't think it's strange, it's just how it is.

                              And re: "O":

Julia wasn't the evil character. Josh was. A truely evil character.

(My apologies for the short short post.)

                              • Is O Othello? I can't remember which play it is, but I remember that it's one of Shakespeare's plays updated. Or am I completely out of it.
I am really not a fan of Steinbeck. Yeah, he was a good writer, but good god he got boring really fast.
