How old were you when you started reading the series?

Spy Kids was fun. I'm waiting for cable to show me Spy Kids 2, though. But just the thought of Ricardo Montalban being Antonio Banderas's dad is wicked cool.

And yeah, the movie's based on the Jane Austen novel. Emma Thompson adapted the book to the screenplay brilliantly, so reading the book right before seeing the film is actually a good thing. Plus, you get to see Alan Rickman as the romantic hero/good guy for once (or twice if you've seen Truly Madly Deeply, which is probably my favorite movie of all time).

Rysade, I dunno, much as I love watching Rickman perform, he still didn't bring Judas Kiss, Quigley Down Under, or Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves up to "good." And his performance in Closet Land, while phenomenal, will never ever EVER get me to watch that flick again. Brrrr. One big long Amnesty International recruiting flick, that.

Well, there's nothing wrong with Amnesty International recruiting, but what I meant was the movie is essentially nothing but one person (Rickman's character) torturing another for the entire two hours. It's not pleasant to watch, by any means.

Rysade, I enjoyed Quigley Down Under as well, but in my odd personal view, that doesn't necessarily make it good. There are films I enjoy, and films I admire. There are good films I don't particularly enjoy, and there are movies I have a hoot with that I don't particularly think are good. Quigley was one of those, for me.

Ah... doesn't really sound like a film I want to see. (The Amnesty International one) My tolerance for blood, for one thing, isn't all that high.

I define 'chick flick' as a movie that usually involves some type of romantic relationship, primarily intended to appeal to, you guessed it, women. I wouldn't call a lot of the movies I enjoy, but don't think merit being called 'great', a 'chick flick'.

Examples of so-called 'chick flicks', IMHO: Erin Brockovich, Return to Me, Thelma and Louise, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Legally Blonde. This does not mean they can't be good, or preclude guys being able to enjoy them!

Examples of enjoyable movies that I wouldn't call 'chick flicks', although they are not necessarily great: Under Suspicion, Along Came a Spider, The Dish, Grosse Pointe Blank, Clerks.

It's all in the definitions!

Oh, fine, you're right. My best friend and I regularly have discussions about what movie we feel like watching- tends to be chick flick, so I suppose I should know better. (Last one, in case you're interested, was Moulin Rouge. We spent the next hour or so humming "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." Love that musical.)

MMmm... have to agree, depends on the musical. Also I think age of guy in question!! EG, my brother, 14, who wants to be Jimi Hendrix (and also wants you to call him Ben, for some unknown reason!) has just informed e that they are "Girls. Definitely." So that's one point of view... however he is extremely immature. And now probably also ticked off.

There are guys who will say Musicals are definately a girl thing. There are guys who would say they're definately not. As a stage-junkie, who loves singing, acting, and being in the audience, I think I fall into the latter category.

That said, I only found Annie bearable because I was keen on a girl in the chorus, and I kept wondering when she was going to come back onstage next! Maybe that one is a girl thing. Give me RENT, Les Mis, or West Side Story and I'll be cheering!

When I was in college, there were two gentlemen in my dorm (informally known as the Looney Dorm) who would, when they felt like it, put on the soundtracks to either Les Mis or Phantom and "perform" the scenes along with the music. This was made both interesting and absolutely hysterical by the fact that they spoofed almost every scene and that there were only two of them; much switching back and forth took place. They would argue over who would have to play the women's parts--yet, every so often, one of them would forget to be silly and really get pulled into the character of Valjean. He would have made an excellent one.

Why those two musicals? They were their favorites, one each. One was full of heroism, glorious last stands, hopeless romance; the other held mystery, forbidden love, redemption. Well, come to that, the qualities sort of overlapped. But in those they saw characters to whom they wished to aspire.
