It's just how I describe racism that's against white people. Because to me, it seems the white people are the ones who do a lot of it, so I tend to call it "reverse racism" when it's the oposite.

    • Tui: oops, yeah. I meant to write Agent M. I just ... didn't. brain freeze, as my friends say. Agent M, congrats!

My town is either really racist or not racist at all. We are all white. (well, there's about 4 Asian kids in middle school, me included) Everyone is rich. (again, most people. then again, one kid's family owns an island. that's rich) It's not a very diverse town. On the other hand, I get along ok with most of them people here. It's ok.

      • Yeah, aurie, I guessed that. But I think it's misleading to call it that, because it encourages the idea that it's only racism if it's from white people against black people, like the idea that sexism is only sexism when it's coming from a guy. It's silly. It bothers me.

          • "Reverse Racism," as Aurora calls it, is a rather big problem at my school. I go to a school that's about 50% White, 40% Asian, and 10% other. In honors classes, it's about 80% Asian and 20% white. There are ALOT of people who think that only Asians belong in honors classes. I've gotton bullied ALOT for being a white girl in Asian classes. These same idiots don't thing that Asians and Whites should be friends. Almost all of my friends are Taiwanese (I speak and write a little Chinese, just out of necessity). People seem to have a big problem with this. They say that I'm "whitewashing" my friends; dragging them down to my level. I'm really worried because I'm going to Winter Formal with a boy, whom I really like, who happens to be Chinese. People have already let me know that they disapprove.
I'm the president of the Human Relations Forum at my school, so I shouldn't be scared about this. I'm not supposed to even notice these things. But I do...
This year, my goal is to get people to realize that having "Azn Pryde" doesn't have to mean putting other people down. I'm also trying to emphacize that sometimes, "protecting your culture" crosses the line and becomes racist.

            • Where I live, the population is mostly haole (white), but Kihei is a statistical anomaly in Hawaii. Most of the population here in Hawaii is "other": Hawaiian, Asian, Filipino, Puerto Rican, Portuguese, etc. We are probably the only state where we don't really have a minority population, because everyone's a minority. You can't afford to be racist, because everyone else, no matter what your ethnicity, outnumbers you.

                • I love all you guys. Everyone here is smart enough to know that racism is wrong. My mom is black, and is a doctor. So many people have treated her badly, but she's still cool! I really think it's awesome that we can all talk to each other about this topic, it's also really fun to see other ppl's views on racism.

                  • Speaking of Italy, there are more Italian's than I thought in MN. Some of my friends are Italian, and some of my little bro's friends moved here 3 years ago from Italy. I LOVE Italian accents they're so cool! Another girl moved here from Switzerland 1 year ago. She speaks French, I like her accent also. There are these Chinese kids who live down the street from me. That's about it for my neighborhood diversity. (I'm just not talking about the Korean's & all the Germans who live in MN.)
You know what I think is really cool? Some ppl are really diffrent, and are super proud of it. There's this kid who is 4 ft. tall, (OK I am the 3rd youngest out of my many cousins and I am 5.2 ft. tall.) and he's really funny and cool about it. He'll make jokes about himself being short! I guess I have a new signature now....love yourself no matter how you look.

Racism is a major problem at my school. I have plenty of Black friends but our school is really seperated. Like last year for instance, our class had 4 lunch tables one was ALL of the blacks and Yari (Puerto Rican) except Michael, he didn't belive in seperation from his friends. Then there was the boys table, then the popular table then my table. (all the misfits ) That shows you diversity in the lunchroom. In second period I have a black friend called Stan the Man, he's cool but he doesn't talk to us in class because he's with his black friends. It is really bad in town also, most of our town is split up, not all but quite alot. People make fun of Yari because she's Puerto Rican and her name is weird, it is spelled Yarinell, but pronounced Jodinell.

                        • My school is mostly for rich kids, being one if not the best school in Puerto Rico. I got in thanks to financial aid at my school and a grandfather who saves money. But there isn't any real racism at my school, maybe discrimination because of how many money you have but not racism.

And, comparing me to other people here in P.R. and not in the states then I'm 'sheltered' too.

                            • My school is, by a vast, vast majority, white. However, I go to a private school: we're the exception rather than the rule. In general, although NZ's population is still white by a majority, this is changing, I believe quite rapidly. There are various reasons:
-we're getting lots of asian students and workers here, known by the unpleasant as the Asian Invasion. >.< This is where most NZ racism comes in- though I'm going to say really clearly that even this is not hugely widespread. However, we do get unpleasant types like Winston Peters who are utterly blind to, apart from any idealism, the real economic benefits. Particularly for schools who need the money: at public schools, NZ citizens don't pay, but asian students often do. Some schools really need the money. Furthermore, New Zealand is close to many Asian countries. And we have lots fo room. This is inevitable. Only idiots think that we can preseve a white majority in enw Zealand: we can't, and furthermore I don't want to. What's the point?

-We've got a growing Maori population- a GOOD THING after the population drop early last century and problems with stuff like assimilation. Assimilation, bye the bye, is what Whale Rider is about, particularly the book- the struggle of the Maori culture to remain whole after huge Western infuences- finding a balance.

-Lots of non-Maori polynesians in New Zealand. (Samoans, Niueans, Cook Islanders, Tongans, Rarotongans, etc, etc, etc) this is because we're the biggest Pacific island: duh. It's all good. In fact, did you know that of the whole population of Niue- like, 20, 000 people- only 2000 actually live on Niue? The other 18,000 are here. And Auckland is the world's largest Polynesian city. There is some mroe racism here, directed against co-called lazy Polynesians in the adult world, and the perception of some, stupid Pakeha children that polynesian children are somehow more violent. This tends to be from peopel like the ones who go to my school- spoilt little white girls. Inf act, my best friend, who goes to a school that's well known for multiculturalism, was asked several tiems "So, do you get, like, beaten up all the time?" WTF???? No! Anyway, it's idiocy.

So it's not like NZ doesn't have its share of racism- there was a program a while ago which I misse,d but it was called Chinks, Coconuts and Curry *******s,, and it was about racism against migrants. Yeah, it's around. Generally, though, I think New Zealand is a lot better off that most places- I guess I've presented you with an unbalanced view. While I know it's there, I don't think it's a driving force.
Mind you, that could be because I'm another one of those spoilt white girls. >.< Hope not.

It sounds like everyone has problems with racism in their area.
Has anyone here done anything about it?

I've been in a few protests, I'm in a tolerance club, and I went to HRC (Human Relations Comission) camp last summer. It feels really good to try to make a difference; even if not that many people will listen to you.
