If you're asking about the feasibility of asking your date if he'd mind adding your friend as a third to your group, this can actually work out quite well - *if* you're right that he's not ready for you to be his gf yet.
A few years ago when I was a senior, (oh, I'm a guy, by the way), I got a call from a family-friend across the state, a girl a year younger then me - sort of a virtual-cousin; she asked if I'd go to her junior prom with her as a friend. I accepted, so my parents and I drove to their house the day of the prom, and then she mentioned that, incidentally, she has three friends (girls) who don't have dates, and would I mind taking *all four* of them. And I really didn't mind. We all (I think) had a good time; it was funny how I drove us to the 2nd house, I did the whole prom-photo thing there; then the third house, photos; the fourth house, photos... :-)
I'm sure phychologists would have a field day speculating what would have been going through my mind as I escorted four young ladies to their school dance, but honestly, it was nothing worse than mild amusement at how out-of-character it was for me to be trying to entertain several girls at once.
But, really, it all worked out. ...Though my own prom was two weeks later, and I think my date for that might have been a little miffed to find out that she was actually my *fifth* prom date ;-) Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it...
