  • The Polling Place

Here's a place to ask the other people on the forum random questions, like "What's your favorite movie that's based on a book?" You just ask a question in bold, preferably, and people will answer it in their posts.

What's your favorite book that you have read in the last month?
I can create a world, out of letters and words. I can make you believe something in a paragraph. I can make you love someone in a page. I can make you go places that don't exist in a book. That's all the magic I need. [url]http://melpomene.freeforums

War at Wizards and The Wedding Officer.

I've read several more, but I've enjoyed those two best. The first, well, everyone knwos what it's about, theother is a historical fiction based on one of the World Wars and how Italy was affected (specifically the life and culture of Italy). The story revolves around two people - an Italian woman and a British officer (the wedding officer) and, oh yeah, it focuses on food. I'd recommend this book for people interested in history. It does have some mature themes (war, and violence and the like).

If you could, where in the universe would you go?

What's your favorite book that you have read in the last month? The Last Unicorn, or Lord of the Rings.
If you could, where in the universe would you go?If I could do it timelessly, I'd go to somewhere with intelligent life. If not, then Mars.

If you could make one wish, and get it to come true, what would it be?

Q: What's your favorite book that you have read in the last month?
A: More like, what's my favorite new book this month (I reread a lot of my favs). I would have to say Heir Apparent by Vivian Vande Velde and Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey (for seriousness).

Q: If you could, where in the universe would you go?
A: I would go somewhere strange and wonderful. Maybe the aliens' planet in Singing the Dogstar Blues , or Lusitania in Ender's Game series. Somewhere real? Well... the Moon. Best place to watch the stars, right, and set up a telescope. (I hope someone built a porch there while I've been gone.)

Q: If you could make one wish, and get it to come true, what would it be?
A: I'd wish for the power of shapechange (with all the instincts and powers of that shape, while still remaining inherently human and in control.) Think how useful it would be, and how one could fly (after learning how, of course)...

Q: If you were given 3 million dollars, what would you do?
A: I'd put it in the bank. *Why are you goggling at me? It's a practical usage. I'll do stuff with it once I get taxes.*

Q: If you could spend a month in vacation anywhere you wanted, where would it be?
                A:

Q: What is your favorite animal?
A: To the dismay of my best friend, it's not a horse, dog, or dolphin. It's the common cat (to my chagrin; I'm allergic.)

                And now my question...
What's your favorite anthology (collection of stories or poems)?

What's your favorite book that you have read in the last month?
i don't really know...i like so many books
If you could, where in the universe would you go?
in this universe? um...i don't know. somewhere with magic. :P (there's got to be SOMEWHERE In the universe where theire's an energy the human mind can channel to create magical effects, if nothihng else...*is still hoping for smething else*
Q: If you could make one wish, and get it to come true, what would it be?
there's a lot...one of my major wishes is to be with fmy friends. but if i could have even nonrealistic...i'd wish for magical abilties. then you can do basically anything (including opening a portal to where my friends are)
Q: If you were given 3 million dollars, what would you do?
i'd buy whatever we needed, get a private jet so that i could visit my friends whenever i wanted...and then put the rest in the bank. i don't too much...just what we basically need, or have really really wanted for a long time, and to be with all my friends, who are spread around the country!
If you could spend a month in vacation anywhere you wanted, where would it be?
i don't know...in the fantasy world of some book. You said ANYWHERE>..you didn't say real place
                  What is your favorite animal?
i'm not sure...i like some cats, and dogs...the animal i like best, is a dragon, but you probably meant something real, os i don't knopw...
What's your favorite anthology (collection of stories or poems)
i don't really know...*is reading every grimm fairly tail ever created in order to see how they've changed over time* does that count?
my question: do you believe in magic, and do you wish you had it?
                  I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

Q: What's your favorite book that you have read in the last month?
A: October Sky; had to read it for school and liked it a lot. I went to SpaceCamp not long after I read it and kept being reminded of parts of the book

Q: If you could, where in the universe would you go?
A: The Crossings in Rirhath B

Q: If you could make one wish, and get it to come true, what would it be?
A: I could go all Miss Congeniality and say World Peace, but I think I'll be more creative and say I would wish for a whole year without fighting my little sister; maybe by then I would be in the habit of not fighting and it would stick

Q: If you were given 3 million dollars, what would you do?
A: Buy a lot of chocolate chip cookies, I dunno...ooo, I do know, I could buy 3 million dollars worth of chocolate chip cookie shares!

Q: If you could spend a month in vacation anywhere you wanted, where would it be?
                    A: Australia because it rocks

Q: What is your favorite animal?
A: A cat, of course; I am one *pounces on her own tail*

Q: What's your favorite anthology (collection of stories or poems)?
A: I get bored when I read anthologies. I guess I'm more of a novel sort of person.

Q: Do you believe in magic, and do you wish you had it?
A: I don't believe in magic; I believe in miracles and physics (and quantum physics comes pretty close to magic sometimes). I do wish that I had magical powers, but that's more of a side-effect from reading so many fantasy stories.

My question...What is the meaning of your life (notice the wording; not life itself but your own life)
"...For my own part, I known my job; my commission comes from Those Who Are. My paw raised is Their paw on the neck of the Serpent, now and always..." - The (Kitty) Catechism

What's your favorite book that you have read in the last month?
Spirits in the Wires by Charles DeLint. I like alot of his stuff, but this one particularly struck me as refreshingly original. It's a tale of a fantasy world that is being effected by a computer virus...and where as that might not sound completely original, you'd have to read it to understand.

If you could, where in the universe would you go?
That's a hard question, and struck with all kinds of weird looks if I gave a straight answer. Basically somewhere where I could learn the really tough questions.

If you could make one wish, and get it to come true, what would it be?
I'd wish for a magic book and pencil. Anything I wrote in this book would become true once I closed the cover.

If you were given 3 million dollars, what would you do?
Put in an overseas bank account to avoid overt taxation...then transfer it slowly into some favorite stocks. After I had settled it, I'd quit my job and do whatever I felt like.

If you could spend a month in vacation anywhere you wanted, where would it be?
Another toughie....I'm divided from Japan, Ireland, or Cancun

                      What is your favorite animal?
Ferrets...they may stink, but darn they're cute.

What's your favorite anthology (collection of stories or poems)?
                      Dreams Underfoot.

Do you believe in magic, and do you wish you had it?
Yes, absolutely...I believe i've witnessed it a time or two. But a lot of people ignore it.

What is the meaning of your life?
Are we ever sure of this? I think probably to get people to see things differently. Rather than stay on the one track they feel is their only one, to look at all the possibilities.

My question...hmmm...What is one thing that needs to change?

What's your favorite book that you have read in the last month?
Fictional, The Last Hero by Terry Pratchett. Non-fictional, The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene (still working through this one, after lending it to my friend) or The Electric Universe by David Bodanis. All of these are highly recommended: the first is- not a parody of a storybook (though still complete with gorgeous full colour illustrations and sketches by Paul Kidby), more a...story for the more widely read and educated. The second is a brilliant walk-through of the history and concepts behind superstring theory. It does get a bit complicated for us highschoolers about a third of the way through, but not so that it isn't readable (and enjoyable). The third is the story of electricity, told in a witty and casual manner and with a very human element woven in.

If you could, where in the universe would you go?
Not sure. Probably just hit the randomiser and sit back. Edge of the observable universe is bound to be cool though- even if it would look to the naked eye a little empty.

If you could make one wish, and get it to come true, what would it be?
Ooh. I dunno. Ability to create my own universes? Or the source code to this universe in legal POVRay syntax.
Or clearing the mysticism around death and stuff might be nice.

If you were given 3 million dollars, what would you do?
Laugh my head off. Then put it in the hands of someone I trust that can manage it wisely for me. Probably put some of it towards research.

If you could spend a month in vacation anywhere you wanted, where would it be?
Anywhere I want on Earth, this universe or anywhere I want? XD
Pretty much anywhere with a fast computer that has good graphics, sound and a good Internet connection. Or some equivalent. I'd quite enjoy Vancouver, actually. Or San Francisco.

                        What is your favorite animal?
                        Dragon?
Fine. Hyena? Robin? Amoeba? Technically an amoeba isn't an animal...but I'm a physics enthusiast, not a bio.

What's your favorite anthology (collection of stories or poems)?
Only read a handful. Don't really have a favourite, though naturally Dragons and Dreams came to mind.

Do you believe in magic, and do you wish you had it?
Not in this universe, no. It'd ruin the point of having science. Although I wouldn't mind having YW type wizardry- that's more like messing with the source code than waving your hands and having something happen. (I am an avid reader of fantasy, however.)

What is the meaning of your life?
I'll tell you the meaning of yours if you can tell me the meaning of mine.

What is one thing that needs to change?
                        Humans.

Imagine an object that would fit in your palm, and describe it briefly. For me, it's kinda leaking through my fingers...but when I squeeze the liquid it stands up in furry looking spikes. It's a kind of silvery grey, like mercury. Probably glows in the dark, and you can stretch it if you have a firm grip. There're little chiming sounds as some of the stuff splashes on the ground.
-Tell me and I may remember; show me and I'll understand; involve me and I'll never forget. Thank you, PM. Your light lives on.

                          1. I think it'll have to be one or all of these three:The Secret of Lost Things, a novel by Sheridan Hay; The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North by Philip Pullman.

                          2. Everywhere, of course. Because I wouldn't be able to pick one specific place. I think I'd like to see a nebula up close.

                          3. I'd keep the wish, and not use it. Making wishes never seems to work out in fairy tales.

                          4. I'd pay for me to go to college first, then put the rest of it in the bank and save it to pay for a beautiful library when I get my own place. And I'd donate some to the RNLI in PM's memory.

                          5. I really don't know. There are too many places I'd love to see, both on this planet and in the Universe. England maybe, or Ireland. Or Russia.

                          6. Phoenix. Or the Great White Shark. Or wild horses.

                          7. I'm afraid I don't have one.

                          8. I would love if the YW type of "magic" were real, and if I could have it, but I know it isn't. I love to read about magic, though, and imagine that it's real.

                          9. If I knew the meaning of my life, what would be the point of living?

                          10. People. Change their minds and change the world.

                          11. It's small, obviously, with a natural sharpness. A cold stone, rose quartz or ameythyst, not altered or smoothed or shaped by anything but nature and time. It feels good in my hand, a comforting heaviness, reassuringly solid when nothing is as it seems.

What is your fondest memory from the forums or chat?
I choose my friends for their good looks, my acquaintances for their good characters, and my enemies for their intellects. A man cannot be too careful in the choice of his enemies. I have not got one who is a fool.--Oscar Wilde

What is the meaning of your life?

i don't know...i have goals, things i want to do, and i like to think i'm meant to help people (mostly cause that's what i keep on doing for a large part of my time....well, emotionally help people anyways. :P) but i have no real idea what the meaning of my life is...*will just have to wait and see*

What is one thing that needs to change?
i agree with everyone else...to some extent, people have to change, since we seem to be the one thing in the equation that's throwing everything else off...i like the fact that we exist. i just think we should probably change the exact nature of HOW we exist...(aka, change what we do in the world)

Imagine an object that would fit in your palm, and describe it briefly.

it's small, round, and hard...but somehow sometimes...squishy. i mean, it's solid, but it's kinda maleable. it seems like something so insignifigant...yet it's somehow something so powerful. with it in your hand, you get the feeling you can do anything...(fantasy reader/writer, remember? what did you expect from me&gt
                            I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.
