Maui is, I suppose, the biggest tourist destination after Oahu. It has resorts and tourist traps, but there are still many areas where you can go faraway from the crowds, even on the beaches. The Big Island is newest, has active volcanoes, and big chunks of it are simulated lunar landscape. It is not very populated in many areas; there are a couple of centers of population (notably Hilo and Kailua-Kona), but the rest of the island is pretty rural. Molokai and Lanai are NOT big tourist areas. They only have one main town each, and roll up the sidewalks at sunset. Very nice if you intend to spend a lot of time walking on the beach, hiking, and reading, but bring your own books, it's that undeveloped.
