Two things about this topic are intriguing to me. One, that it has been floating around as long as it has, and two, just how absurd and strange I was at a young'un. Well, several years ago, anyway.

I think the saddest thing about DW is that most people who have heard of the series never got to it. A lot of people got bogged down a bit in SYWTBAW, and missed one of the highlights of the series. It has everything that embodies just how awesome these books are. It's funny, but serious, and has an awesome story. I do like that we get to see quite a bit of Tom and Carl in it, as they are my favorite characters. Beyond Peach, of course.

Im sure Ive posted on here many times (going way back into history) But I still think that DW is by far the best book. I think the best bit in it for me was when she came out to her parents and took them to the moon. It was magical, and in a way very very powerful. I think it would be nice to maybe have some more 'normal' characters in the books that are blown away by the 'power' and magic. Kits sister is not too blown away by it but Nitas dad might be! Do you know what i mean?
God its hard to keep up with everything here!!

finding out about magic IS an interesting thing to witness in others...but if they were constantly introducing new people with no idea what magic was into the series, the secret wouldn't stay for long...it might be interesting to see some new wizards, still a bit freaked out by their ordeal though. *is now wondering at this book* i never thought it was the best, but looking back and remembering all these things...i guess it DOES rank fairly high on the list.
        I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

Deep Wizardry has always been my favorite YW book (well, ever since I discovered that HW was part of a series, anwyay ). I don't have a coherent explanation why - it's everything, the characters, the story, the emotion...

Ed is certainly my favorite of all the minor character. The part where Nita and Kit tell Nita's parents about wizardry, and take them to the moon, is incredible. The scene where Nita asks Carl (I think it's Carl?) for something he, or they, can do always brings tears to my eyes. The Song of Twelve itself is incredibly intense and powerful, particularly when everything goes awry.

Yeah, without question it is my favorite.

I put don't make me choose - I love each and every one of thm sooo(...) much. I really can't choose, but I really do love DW, and I did take my signature from it... The thing is, I have plenty of favorite books - but I love too many to choose one in particular.
"And on he went, out of sight in unhurried grace; the true dark angel, the unfallen Destroyer, the Pale slayer who never really dies -- seeking for pain to end." Deep Wizardry, page 355 Listen, and I'll tell you a story... of the wind in the trees, and the sun, the moon and the stars... of all of Earth dancing

Ummm,I can't choose. I mean, DW was pretty intense and really good, but I think that they all have different and good things about them; hence, they are all good. I think someone said earlier that some people never got to it, because they got bogged down be SYWTBAW. I was wondering... HOW? I mean, i guess I just don't understand how people could dislike/be bored with it.

I can't choose favorites...but if I had to I would probably like AWAb and W@W best, I think. But I did really like DW, I thought it was so sad, and what it said about sacrifice...yeah, I definitely liked it. I cried the first time I read it...and the second...and the third...

All of them focus on different things, so I can't say that any of them are the best. But it introduces Dairine and non-human wizards, which make the series as good as it is, and it does make one think about what if...

It is hard to pick a favorite book of the series because they where all good in there way.
But i will say that W@W was probably the one that i still think about.
Just with everything that went on and knowing that Kit really knew what happened between Ronon and Nita, it's just so exciting to see what comes of that, now that it seems that Ronon will be hanging around more. teehee.
                        I'm just sayin'!

I don't know... they all kept me up reading them, though I admit that HW was a little harder to get through than the others, though I agree that it contributes quite a bit to the other books.
and I agree- a little bit about W@W... I thought that it was definetly a highlight... I wonder what AWOM will be like...

I would say that this one was okay... but I think that the best is probably AWA I liked that one a lot. But like wolfy said, most of the books kept me up pretty much every time.

I wish I could read AWOM!!
Time passes. Even when it seems impossible.
Even when each tick of the second hand aches like the pulse of blood behind a bruise.
It passes unevenly, in strange lurches and dragging lulls, but pass it does. Even for me.

Yes, I'd say it definitely is the best of the series. The themes it deals with - death, sacrifice, "coming out" to your family about aspects of your life and complex relationships - in my mind make this a classic and a serious work of literature.

The other books are enjoyable and fun, and some of them deal with similar themes, but I think that DW is right up there with the best of the Narnia series in terms of being a true classic, albeit a generally less known and underappreciated one.

The more recent works are more of a romp through the world of wizards and wizardry. Still good fun and well written, but so far none have measured up to DW in terms of literary merit, in my personal opinion anyhow.

I think this is way the best book in the series so far (well maybe Wizards at war was as good but mostly because there was so much going on in it).

The sacrifice / redemption stuff was what made it work for me... and also the fact that when Nita realized she was in trouble, her senior wizard didn't try to get her out of it, just sort of said "Tough, you got yourself into this and now you have to do what you said you were going to do." There was none of this "lets make it easy for the little kids and not scare them by talking about death or anything freaky."
