Well one and all, i think we can all agree with all he statements about most stories are related or linked to older stories. But please can we just talk about the good things about the book for a while.
Bluesalamander your right it is very much like the Pern series [which i love!] in the fact that the rider and dragon are joined and can speak telepathically [sorry about the spellings ].

Thank you, bluesalamanders, for saying what I could not put into words.

Now, we should do as Fox bids, before this squabble attracts the attention of the Mods.

Maxxrox what does MODS stand for? Looks simular to something, but i can't think what it is?
Plus anyone that has seen the trailer, do you think they have got Saphire right [Yes i know thats not her name but well i cant remember what it really is]. I mean i still think her wings look funny and she really has a swan like neck, i expected something a little shorter.

          Fox-

"Mods" isn't an acronym, it's short for "moderators", meaning the people who are in charge of keeping the peace around here.

          Max-

You're welcome, glad you liked it. And now I'm more than willing to bow out and let the regularly scheduled conversation resume

and i'm all for getting back to the good things...i'm an admin on a forum for eragon, so i have to defend it no matter what...much rather talk good things about it though. and i don't know...i don't know why they couldn't just make it like in the book...the auther suplied pictures and everything! but i suppose it doesn't matter with the exact looks anymore...even if they got it wrong, if they do it good they will change how we think of it, so that we imagine that as how it should be...
            I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

Maxx....hee. I started laughing out loud at your clearly scathing demeanor. And I could barely read the examples you put up. I was cunfuzzled much. XD But I guess I am slightly guilty of 1337, because I say things like ppl (but only while chatting or IMing) and sp? when I'm asking if I spelled something right. I generally use a lot of abbreviations while chatting and IMing.

But I have an excuse of sorts;I suck at typing, (as in I am very slow XD) so shortening words helps things go a bit faster for me.

Pax (excuse the abbreviation, it's habit :P) the were-cat is named Somlembum. Which I thought was a pretty...strange, to say the least, type of name.

YR, imagine it how it should be? >.< That would suck. After all, we all have our own unique points of views; without that books would be boring.

And I don't think there's anything wrong with criticising (sp?) the books, so long as it doesn't turn into a raging flame-war. :P As it is, I think the discussion had been more of a rather heated debate rather than a full-out squabble, but just to be on the safe side, I agree with the rest of you.

Fox, the dragon's name is Saphira, and you're right, her wings look sadly feathery. I did like the neck, however. They did well on her, save the wings and (just my opinion!) her face. So as that's all I had to contribute, see you all around!

-There's an evil empire that rules cruelly
-Farmboy finds great power, goes away with temporary wise trainer (eventually to be replaced with true master)
-Wise guider person (trainer) dies in fight against "evil power"
                -new master is reeeeeaaaaallly old
-Farmboy's home is destroyed, forcing him to go on adventure
-2 evils: greater and lesser (Galbatorix and Durza, Emperor and Vader)
-Farmboy gets good at what he does and joins resistance movement vs evil empire
-Farmboy's power is unique to the great Evil and him - nobody else has it (excluding trainer and master)
I agree that Eragon is not the most original of works. It really is a pretty standard "dragon riders" fantasy, probably popular largely due to its appeal to younger readers.

However, I would hesitate to say that the points you've listed above are "clichés" because what they really story elements that trace back to the Greek myths, the stories on which most all our stories are based (even Shakespeare used the plots of Greek myths for his plays!) While Eragon may not have many exciting plot twists or innovative character designs, it does a very good job of presenting a classical epic - a specific literary genre for which there is a set formula, almost like a poem that requires a certain number of lines or syllables.

While Eragon could be more complex and fleshed out, and perhaps should have been saved and worked over before publication, it can be viewed instead as an epic faery tale in the strain of the classical myths.
And the Dragon's song, so wild and strong,
Fell from the sky like rain
Upon my soul; which, watered well,
Bloomed with a joy no words can tell
Where once was a dusty plain.

-A verse from the Song of the Winged Ones

i know, you might not like it, but admit it, how many times have you gone to a movie based on a book, and have never been able to imagine the character other then as they portray it? or read it, and always here the actors voice in the backround?

My point being, so I imagined it another way? Some people did imagine it how it was portrayed in the movie; they're just different perspectives. There is no, "supposed to be" when you're reading unless it is incredibly detailed and described in the book, so there cannot possibly be any variations on what it would look/sound/feel/whatever like. I can think of examples when a movie got it completely wrong, but someimes it's just another person's way of seeing things.

i agree that there is no "supposed to look like" in books, though everyone who goes to movies made of books go "that's not how it's supposed to look like!" but when they make them into a movie, usually you can see the character no other way...i think that's why most people really get upset when they portrait a character wrong, cause it messes up their image of the character for all eternity by forever linking it to that image.

And you don't want Gigo to find one of your one-liners...Gigs'll bite your head off. :P And watch for Poot, too. :P

Anyway, no, I try to retain my initial way of seeing a character even after I've seen the movie. Admittedly thoigh, sometimes my perspective is budged a little bit when I see the actors. *yawn* I need sleeeep...but I miss LB. She's at camp...

i was watching a preview onabc family when i was watching harry potter, and it was kinda wierd. Like, he was helping her fly and she did and his gedia ingasia thingy burned and lightning, like struck Saphira and made her grow. it didn't make much sense. and then she could all of a sudden hear his htoughts and they could communicate. i didn't think it... well, it was kinda wierd to me. did anyone else see the previews? Also, her voice seemed to echo. Lauren (my little sister) got mad at the voice. *Snickers at Lauren's need to learn about dealing with it * Oh well.
I haven't been in chat for a month! ALl because I told my mom I wouldn't go. Why do I have to listen to my mom like a good little girl??!!
