Z, Lord of the Rings isn't quite that old - it was published in the 1950s.

Which might seem like the early 1900s to someone born 40 years later, I suppose. Urk. I was born in 1958, so it just doesn't seem that long ago.

I think Tolkien died in the mid-70s, almost 30 years ago. Wow, I must be old.

yeah, I payed 20 bucks for dinner on tuesday for a sushi dinner. Mmmmmm! Good! The rice was perfect, much better than when I made it at home.

Rysade: The trick to good sushi rice is 1) use a rice cooker and short grain calrose. 2) use rice vinegar and the sweet rice wine (mirin) in equal proportions, (not white vinegar and granulated sugar like some clueless recipes tell you). Heat and then mix the flavors into the rice while it's hot, and then cool the rice down with fanning. A wooden bowl helps evaporation so the rice won't be too wet from all the added liquid of the vinegar/wine mixture.

I heard somewhere that the word "sushi" actually refers to the rice, not the fish.

Surfy: Eel sushi is a "[shudder]"?! But that's one of the cooked ones, with teriyaki sauce. Geez, you guys are sushi lightweights! Whatever you do, don't order ama ebi or ankimo or shirako. (More for me and DD!! )

Oh yes. Very old. Odd, I've been told before I sound younger online - 20s or so.

Every topic is turning to food, which makes me crave tri-tip. Barbecue will live forever, yes yes it will.

Kathy, we've got a great sushi place with a sampler platter. And they do hibachi. Anyone that can create a three foot flame tower in front of me gets my vote.

We should start a food thread. If you're really craving tri-tip, you need to find a churrascuria. It's like dim sum, but the waiters are walking around with beef tidbits on sword-like skewers. It's heckafun.

I'm such a snob, I generally only eat sushi at the bar in restaurants, these days. But yeah, hibachi's great. Also greatly enjoy shabu shabu for the fondue-entertainment factor alone.

I think it's partially due to watching the Food Network. Oh if only I could cook like Emeril. Then I'd be the one eating like a king, and making millions (only like a queen instead).

BUT
If I did like sushi, and if you do like sushi, the BEST way to eat it is at Sushi Catch, where they have conveyor belt and it all goes round and round and round and... *grins* Okay, so I'm amused by tiny details. Anyway, if I did like sushi, that would be how I'd eat it. (let other people do the cooking for me... always the best plan for things not involving roast potatoes. )

What is wrong with roast potatoes??? I grew up next to a great potato farm. Ahh... huge russet potatoes that were nearly a foot long and about 5 inches in diameter. I remember the days. Well, then, when I was old enough to finally appreciate all things potato, my parents up an move us to a dust bowl where the potatoes here are a joke. Being a potato coneseur (sp??), I have to hunt for any decent quality... most of the time, I just give up and buy the instant... they taste better. *shocked look* Yes, you heard me correctly. I would rather have instant than have my taste for pure, wonderful potatoes cheapened.

I can picture it now... my grandmother making mashed potatoes with cream and butter and salt. Nothing like it. *drooling* *wipes corner of mouth with sleeve* *sigh* Ahh.. the memories.

BTW: You will never convince me that raw meat is good for me or that it even tastes good. I do not care for slimy, fishy smelling, chewy food. I refuse to eat calamari too. Gross. Give me a nice grilled cheese burger with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and ketchup. Hmm... I am hungry.

Lucky you, Chani! I love potatoes! Actually Kli6, the eel was indeed raw. It wasn't cooked. And I have had raw fish sushi, I just aren't really into the fishy taste. I started reading the Lord of the rings series, db_pr, but I coulden't really get into them. I saw the first movie, though!

That's weird. I've never known a sushi joint to serve eel RAW. But then, if the sushi tasted fishy, that might explain it, too. If it smells/tastes fishy, it ain't fresh, and that's one of those sushi joints you learn to avoid.
