  • I had a geography test today. We had to write an essay during the test on the effects of the chemical agents and various explosives used during the Vietnam War...it wasn't so hard. The rest was easy.

Hey, littlehorse, do you think we're using the same geography book? World Geography Today? Holt? Purple cover with mountains on it?

I hope you did well on your exams, Tui.

    • Ella, you're in the same grade as me and you get to learn about the Vietnamese war?! LUCKY!!! I'm stuck with the who-cares-Civil War, and a little more important, but still extremely boring, Sioux Indians.

        • *is sorry for M* I am so BORED of American history!! It's like they don't think anything else is important enough to learn!

I like Geography, but more the cultural and historical aspects, rather than the physical ones (rivers, mountain and such). I have American history next year, but I think it will be interesting, as the teacher is my advisor and he's really cool...

I SO agree with you Ella!! All we are gonna learn about for this year and the next is boring american history. Except I think we might learn a bit about the Renasannce (sp?) next year. But we have to learn about American history EVERY YEAR!!! It can get incredibally boring... Birdhead you are SO lucky you don't have to endure years and years of american history torture...

              • Can I transfer to your school?! PLEEZ!?!??! jk. Yea. EVERY YEAR. Since 3rd or 4th grade, some in second but not much. 3rd and 4th graders have to learn about the incredibally boring pioneers, 5th graders.... Some of the pioneers and some about the American Revolution and some Civil War, 6th grade, LOTS of the American Revolution, 7th we learn about the Civil War and the Indians, 8th grade is World War II. OOH! And 2nd graders get the immigrants. We repeat ourselves a lot... *grr*

                • Well, I don't take history. But I am next year... we're doing Tudor England, IIRC.

Actually, i sometimes wish there was a bit more compulsory history here... it's important. Hoever, I think we did NZ history in year 10, and that year I took year 11 History instead. Oh, I did some NZ stuff there... NZ search for security after WWII, NZ race relations, and... what else? Think that was it. *shrugs* I guess it would be horrible doing the same stuff year after year. It's good we don't have to do that!!

                    • *sigh* No, Creationism and science are not mutually exclusive. And Evolution is not synonymous with science.

                      And I quote:

'All scientific work is ultimately based on certain assumptions that are accepted by faith. These presuppositions are the basis for one's philosophy, or worldview. To the scientests of the past...the faith was in Creation and the fact that the created world is orderly and predictable. To a person who regects Scripture and its account of Creation, the faith is often in materialism, or naturalism...

'The scientist uses his powers of reason to find out the truth of the universe; in a sense, he 'reads' the physical universe as if it were a book...

'The Scriptures...demonstrate that great variety can develop within created kinds...

'One [scientist who] embraced materialism was a young British naturalist named Charles Darwin (1809-1882)...'

And right now I think I'm going to have to stay up all night if I want to type relevant quotes out, but basically Darwin took variation within kind to mean that there could be variation outside of kind. The point is that there has never been a solid evolutionary argument, and nature points toward special creation. No transitional forms have ever been found; if organisms have gradually changed into organisms over time, there would be countless fossils of transitional forms, connecting every kind on earth with their common ancestors. However, there are actually large gaps between different kinds. Okay, I lifted that last sentence and a half out of my textbook, but still...

"That's right," he said. "We're philosophers. We think, therefore we am."

                      • Well, we're obviously going to have to agree to disagree... but as for creationism and science, science basically holds that at any point after the Big bang matter is constant, right? ie you can't create something out of nothing. So to me creationism, which is the very idea of creating something out of nothing while also having an existence after the Big Bang, or whatever, is exclusive from straight scientific thought..

... and you're my friend, so I really don't want to have a discussion about this, because it will end up as a fight. And I don't want that.
