  • Cool! Good for you!

We get our grades soon *crosses fingers*. The one I'm really worried about, believe it or not, is my English grade: I don't think our teacher's very good, and she's an incredibly harsh grader. Although it's not all her fault, partly it's because we only have about 35 minutes (although it's supposed to be 45) because it seems to take our class forever to walk back from lunch.

I'm not as worried about my other grades: I've been doing well in math, science, and geography, and French is simply a breeze, since all but the conjugating verbs is old stuff to me. What other classes do I have...specials. Health: I went into hysterics the other day when I got my test back because I'd though I had failed it and I got a hundred. Performing arts: I've had a hundred, as far as I can tell, on everything so far. I don't think we get a grade in art. So I should be okay...*hopes*

      • Why? Don't you like English? Or is your teacher from Mars?

Oh, I was once on this web site for a school in Peru, and they have to take 90 MINUTES of English every morning. I'm so glad it's my native language. Spanish is a whole lot easier to learn. I think so, anyway.

          • No, no, it was my exam. You know, end-of-year final, national exam which goes on your record for ever, even if no-one really cares about your 6th form grades.... *shakes* I think I did OK. Had Maths this morning, which was SO much better than I thought it was going to be. In the end I had to leave one Excellence question half done, but only because I did it wrong the first time- we were given a simultaneous equation and when I tried to solve for T(1), I came out with an answer that was impossible. Then I was half-way through re-doing it and solving for T(2), and we had to stop... kinda sucked but oh well. *shrugs* it was just the one question. As for the rest, there was nothing I actually couldn't do... some phrasing difficulties (don't you just hate it when you don't quite know what they're asking?) and you had to work pretty much constantly or else run out of time, which was just a bit rushed, but apart from that... I could do everything, so that was all good.

Ah crazy teachers from other planets, sometime I'll tell you about my old science teach. Right now I g2g! School. Ug.

              • Ah, exams. That's understandable. I just had a World Geography test today. I think I failed it. But, then, I forgot to study, so that could be why. On a lighter note, I got a 98 on my last Biology test. So that's good, even if I did fail my Geography test. Wow, my logic is really weird.

                • Heh. Mitosis and meiosis are basically the reason I didn't take Bio... though I did excite amazement in a couple of friends who were studying for Bio when I was able to accrately asnswer a question on Darwin. (Frankly, I think that any 16 year old who _doesn't_ know about Darwin, whether or not they take bio, lacks something fundamental!)

So, Physics today... *chants* Momentum is constant and does not change after collision. There is both a constant speed and an acceleration in centripetal motion because the speed (ie rate at which distance is covered) is constant but the velocity vector changes, and acceleration is defined as a change in velocity. And alpha particle is a He nucleus, a beta particle is an electron (formed after a neutron decays into a proton and an electron) and a gamma particle is radiation...
blah blah. Oh well, wish me luck...

                  • Ooh! I know Darwin! It's about evolution and adaption right? I learned about momentum last year, not as in depth though, just the basics, it was confusing though because of our teacher. Speaking of which I'll tell you guys about him, He said that there was absolutly no way there was any other life forms in the universe but the life forms on Earth, I think he said that other galaxies didn't exist, he told us how some asian people were punished when they stole something (I don't know about you guys but I don't see how that has to do with science), he asked a kid if he was God, he COULD NOT spell, he almost never talked about science, just random stuff and a lot about Religion, and we never really learned anything until he disapeared for two weeks and then he supposedly resined (sp?) but everyone thinks that he was fired, and the substitute is still teaching there, she's a really good teacher too. And good luck Birdhead!!

                        • I know more about Darwin than I want to...every single of my science textbooks mentioned him in depth and with considerable antagonism. They were mostly written by diehard Baptists, I think. Oh well. At any rate, a huge horrible botany final is coming up for my bio class. *cringes*

                            • Tui,

There are fundamentalist Christian groups in the U.S. which have managed to persuade schools in some places to use textbooks which are based on a point of view called "Scientific Creationism". It does its best to try to refute Darwinian evolution.

Discussions of the whys and wherefores of such things usually degenerate info flamewars, with neither side convincing the other.

The educational system in the U.S. leaves a great deal to be desired. Too many people get an education in spite of it, not because of it.
