• Wow, it's fairly amazing how on-topic we still are... ten pages later... you know, it's okay to get off-topic some of the time. Or it used to be, anyway.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> ...I'd always assumed that Ponch was the reason for the leak, actually... huh. </div>
I was about to say that I agreed, but then I thought about it and I'm not sure- on the other hand, I highly doubt Ponch's behaviour is (at least solely) caused by the "leakage;" in fact, what we've heard of it (no quotes, sorry) is that after consultation with Tom they concluded that it was probably a problem of wizardry leakage. I do think the DVD player and the TV are related to the leakage; I don't think Ponch's behaviour is, because frankly the symptoms are so general and the information so sketchy that even Kit remarks that it is described as "a suite of irritatingly vague symptoms." *shrug*

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> Do you think this topic scares DD?
</div>
It would scare me, but I doubt she reads it except to laugh at us. And anyway, even if it did, it's her own fault; she likes to watch us squirm. Look! According to that interview, she's been doing it for YEARS:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">&gt;Did you ever appear as a character in one of your TREK books?

Yes. But I'm not going to discuss where. I leave it as an exercise for
the readership. Hint: I *do* appear in [John Ford's] HOW MUCH FOR JUST THE
PLANET?.

&gt;Is John in any of your books? :-)

Yes.
</div>
Does that not remind you- like, a lot- of how she answers out questions? Cruel, cruel, cruel. She likes to torture. (Um. not really, Diane. Obviously we enjoy it or we wouldn't talk for ten pages about it)
As for the suggestion that creation is easier than changing: to me, that soudns extremely appropriate. To anyone who's read The Book of Night with Moon (SPOILERS FOLLOW!) <span class="ev_code_WHITE">it seems to me that that would fit in very much with Rhiow's comments about the mysterious spell: (as I remember it had) huge power output and no apparent way to get it to be there apart from simply asking for it.</span> To me that would also fit comfortably in with YW-style Powers: that it's not really that hard, we just don't know how to do it. Remember, it's not supposed to be difficult, that's a result of entropy.

(or is it? is the everything has a price problem a result of the Lone One's influence or not? interesting question.)

As for the dog-wizard thing, everyone seems to be talking a lot about Kit's shapechange. But that's irrelevant here: Kit used a whalesark. You should be looking at the dangers of a Nita-style shapechange, which involved invoking some sort of kinship with the whales. (Especially because the problem with Kit becoming too whale-like was that his body would reject the whalesark and he'd turn back into a human.)

And do Tom and Carl's dogs bring stuff back from nowhere? I thought they were finders- like they "found" Nita. (And, Ankaa, Nota's dad was talking to Tom. Not that it's, um, important or anything. <STRIKE>I'm not a minor character obsessive, or anything.</STRIKE> [/tomncarlgeek]

• Birdhead I do believe that this is one of the few times that you have posted a longish post and Ive understood it! Who said with age came knowlegde! alot of that made sense! I wonder if Rhiow spell would work again! I was thinking that maybe it was a spell that would only work in certain times and places! Anyway back to topic. We did create a theory that once Ponch was a wizard of some sort, did a shape change and like what nearly happened to Nita forgot what it was like to be human so forgot and stayed as a dog! Granted I dont think that argument will stand anymore!

• Hmm, that might be a bad sign. I'm losing my touch!

Either that or I'm just better at explaining.

Actually, fox, my point was that Kit forgot how to be human, but he wouldn't have stayed as a whale, he would have rejected the whalesark. I've forgotten what Nita's danger was.

You're probably right. But I will go get my DW and check... I just be bothered climbing four flights of stairs to get it right now. :P

• I thought Nita's danger was that if she forgot how it was to be human then because she shapechanged she would be stuck as a whale! thats what gave me the idea about Ponch! hahaha I dont think you have anything to worry about! Maybe its just me understanding more! haha

• Birdhead there is no problem! we all remember differant things in these books! I think i got confused too because of the two differant types of shape change explained in that book!

WOW you have a stalker!! That makes you a celeb in a way

• I went back and read a wizard alone again and you know what struck me as odd?

when Darrel said to ponch "'You shouldn't be here...I see what your becoming you have to leave you can't get stuck in here with him'"

now remember machu picchu he was the One's Champion. Call me crazy but I think Ponch is the same One.

• I don't think so. Ponch is nothing like Peach, even though that has no effect on wether Ponch is one of the Powers that be.

Hmm...would you call one of the Powers that be

a Power that IS? Hmm...interesting. We should all give it some thought.

My opinion is that wizardry had a leak around Kit's house, and Ponch's imagination got caught, and now he possesses the power to create his own universe. How different could it be from imagination? The only thing different is that with the wizardry, Ponch's (or Kit's, or anyone elses) creations are turned real. Now this could be a problem...I'm still wondering where Kit's nightmares went.

• I agree with you about Peach; I don't think this is a similar thing, because it's clear that Ponch himself is actually becoming something; Darryl says that somewhere in Alone, and Nita implies it too at one point. In Peach's case, she WAS that Power herslef. Of course in Ronan's case it's different again, but then Ronan himself wasn't changing- or he was, but he was still basically a crabby Irish guy, he wasn't changing, like, his classification in the Orders of Being.

Of course, I'm betraying my bias here, because that's what I think is happening.

As for the wizardry leakage, I don't think that what's happening to Ponch is related- certainly not on a cause/effect basis, anyway, because Nita thinks in Alone something along the lines of "Whatever was happening at Kit's house, Nita thought that whatever was happening to Ponch was something different." I mean, that's a oaraohrase because it's all the way up in my room, but. Well, you get me.

• I suppose so but it seems to me that maybe ponch himself is going to end up being a new division in the Order of Being. He seems to be like a World Walker or something. You know though how the entropy and stuff. Well if this universe is going to be destroyed ponch can make a new one and everyone can move there.

I am sure you all will agree that ponch is possibly one of the series weirdest charachters and maybe...*train of thought derailed. Train totaled*

Heh, I like your discription of Ronan as 'a crabby Irish guy'. Perhaps, like Ronan, Ponch has something inside him, that's being brought out by the wizardry leakage. But what? Your guess is as good as mine.

• I wouldn't say my guess is as good as yours
it's probably worse. Ronan may be a "crabby irish guy" but becareful I am irish.

any ways ronan was able to save everyone in the end so cut him a little slack. as for ponch i can no more predict what he is going to be than turn into a sausage.

I agree with &lt;Bo&gt; because that is my real name . Any ways ponch has been exibiting unusual abbilities of late. I am compelled to aggree with myself on this. Ponch probably will end up as a new catagory in the order of being I just don't know which one if at all.
So I hope that on april second some one will ask DD.

• I have a REALLY strange theory...
I noticed that Ponch seems to develop more everytime the Lone Power is changed. I wonder if Ponch is somehow symbolic of the Lone Power's ability to change for the good. I thought of this because Kit has been needing to teach him about life and such. It seems to me that the Lone Power would somehow need to learn about good and the Ponch might be Its vehicle for that...

• You might have something there FireWitch...
I recall, in the 6th books AWA, on page 215. The passage:
And Kit saw Darryl catch sight of Ponch. Darryl froze. Kit turned to look toward him, dulled, not understanding what he was seeing. Darryl and Ponch looked at each other. Ponch stood there with his head up, his tail wagging. It was a speculative look on Ponch's part. He was no more sure what Darryl was reacting to than Kit was.
"You," Darryl said. "_You_ have to go."
Up in the trees, the screaming was scaling up again. "Go on," Darryls said- not to Kit, now, but to Ponch. "Don't wait. I recognize you- what you're becoming. But you can't stay. It'll be here soon. This time you're here the wrong way, you've been sucked in with him and It'll see the two of you for sure. Go on!"
"We will," Ponch said...
First, I can't do italics on this thing, so instead of italics, I did _..._ those. But from looking at that, your theory that Ponch being a vessel for the LP's changing for good seems possible. When Darryl says, "I recognize you, what you're becoming..." Its like he's saying that he knows what Ponch is symbolic for. I've considered Ponch being more than just the average wizards pet. He's deffinatly more advanced than Tom and Carls pups. And the two of them have been around wizards for a LOT longer. I think that your idea is really interesting. Though we'll deffinatly have to wait for #8...
