hmmmm.... Ponch a wizard. Interesting. I kind of like the idea.... but I'm not so sure. I like mteorite's idea of Ponch actually being a worldgate, but I doubt it, because then how could he go.... physically nowhere, and then create a somewhere out of a nowhere?? am I making any sense?? And how could he create places?? though he can take other people to places. hmmm.
That requires a great deal of thought.
    heh.

Personally, I think that he merely has a very strange gift, like Tom and Carl's dogs. That doesn't necessarily mean they're wizards.
tom and carl's dogs have some weird attributes, but their abilities come nowhere close to Ponch's...what else can they do,actually, besides barking real loud and digging up bones? the koi can recite poems, but these poems aren't of much use... Peach could tell ur fortune, but tt's an exception;she was a Power.
what i'm saying is,i think Ponch is in a league of his own.

No, I think what Ponch has (hah. makes it sound like a disease.) is considerably more than a normal wizard-pet reaction. yeah, what he has is a lot more extreme than the dogs and koi (Who I think are kinda cool. haikus, yes yes...) but I also don't think he's turning into a wizard; I think it's more than that. because Darryl had trouble looking at Kit, but he said to Ponch: "I can see you... I can see what you're becoming." (Memory again... must check that) Later on he says "His eyes... aren't like your eyes, or his(the Lone Power's)." This would seem to imply he's not becoming either a Power or a wizard or any of the more common Orders of Being. It's very interesting. I also don't think it's a normal wizardry leakage thing... half because DD's really enjoying watching us squirm. I suspect that the only thing we can do here is Read And Find Out. Groan. As if I'm not getting enough of that fro, R obert Jordan (the RAFO original! )

Too bad A Wizard Alone is the one I haven't got.... I'm out of speculations regarding what's going on with Ponch, except that I wonder how the other dogs' coming to the house and howling plays into things.

The koi actually seem to be... almost as prophetic as Peach in some ways; granted Kit didn't figure out what the "eye of the dragon" thing was supposed to mean until it was time to use it, but they didn't always work out what Peach meant until right at the time or afterwards, either.

...I should really go to a Peach thread to speculate on how weird it must be to find out the bird who stole your sandwiches and whom you used to clonk on the beak was the One's Champion.

One of them moved the car that Fred created and left tooth marks in it. So at least one of them is intelligent enough to realize "that shouldn't be there," extremely strong, and with rather tough teeth.

They "find things." The implication in that particular passage being, I think, that they find _unusual_ things... in other words, not jsut bones. Tom mentions that they found kit and Nita, too (when they were peeking through the hedge?)... Oh, and in High Wizardry somehwere it says that their pets "understood and sometimes spoke numerous languages," or something. Which could just refer to Peach/koi. But anyway, they definitely can do other stuff.

Oh yeah, and don't forget they're asking about the meaning of life...

Actually, it seems as if some of what Ponch does has also been referred to as "finding things," but I can't find the reference at the moment. And that doesn't cover the worldmaking.

Couldn't the koi tell the future, too? Maybe not, but I thought in Dilemma it did. I think it said that the dogs could speak numerous languages, also. And remember when Annie brought Kit an asperin (sp?) for his head ache? That's definitely unusual.

Why could Darryl tell what Ponch was "becoming" when no one else even guessed?
                    And what is he becoming???

We're all very curious about that! I think Kit and Nita (not to mention the Manual) have the idea that Ponch is becoming, but even assuming the Manual (or the Power(s) in charge of who sees what) knows, they aren't telling us yet.....

I wonder if this is one of the plotlines DD mentioned getting some resolution in Wizards at War.

Darryl probably knew about Ponch because he's an abdal. Comes with the position, I guess. And I have a feeling we'll find out more about Ponch in later books.

Or maybe Darryl knew about ponch because he was inside his mind. (in a way)
I don't think that the higher wizards know whats going on, because in the fifth book Carl (or Tom) mentioned something about some team being very confused about this... =)

I know it's been more than half a year since anyone said anything, but I'd like to point something out:
"Ponch," he said, "I can't believe I've never asked you this before. But what's your name?"
The dog laughed at him. "You just said it."
                            (cut discussion of Tinkerbell)
"I don't mind the name you gave me," Ponch said. "I use that. It says who I am."
                            -from The Wizard's Dilemma

Ponch avoids telling Kit his real name. Now, I don't know if that actually does mean anything or not, but it seems pretty promising, no? There could be anything in his real name... so this could imply that Ponch really does have some clue of what's going on.

I am personally of the opinion that Ponch is (or is becoming) a wizard, due to a quote from Holiday. When Nita, Kit, and Ponch run into Urruah at Grand Central on their way to Alaalu, Urruah is "using a form of selective invisibility that left him visible to wizards but invisible to other humans." But it specifically states that Ponch can see Urruah! Therefore, I'm pretty convinced that Ponch will end up as at least a wizard, if not something more powerful (I like the idea of him being a throne or one of the other similar things, as well).

Ponch becoming a throne? That'd be interesting... thrones are an order of angel from Judeo-christian mysticism (third order of three in the first circle, also of three, and eq. of Ofanim; they're shaped like "firey wheels," if I remember correctly). I'm not sure what they would be in DD's world (given Powers is also an order--second or third in the second circle, I think--of angels, and that isn't quite the case here....).

Huh... if anything, I'd say Ponch would probably become a cherub (takes form of great, celestial beasts, second order in first circle), whose function is basically to protect... and he seems to do that a lot for Kit and Nita. Or... gleeh... I have no idea. He could be something entirely different, too.
