Young reader: after you got your new computer, did you transfer files from the old one to the new one? You may have moved the virus to the new computer. The problem you have is almost certainly caused by a virus/trojan etc. I've had the problem myself before, and got rid of it by a) using various virus/trojan removing tools until the computer got well again and b) never NEVER using IE again because it is so weak against viruses etc.

I'm not really in charge of that stuff, but i don't think so...i think we just started to ignore the old laptop, once we got the NEW computer. *Shrugs* but, though i seem to be the only one with the problem on THIS site (unless others had the problem and couldn't post about it cause they were unwilling to risk it happening again) i know the same thing happens to others on other sites...my friend created one that did that. they couldn't figure out what on the site was doing it...it just DID it, somehow. (as far as anyone could figure, it was just internet explorer, but other people who have internet explorer, of the same variaty, don't have the same problems!)
      I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

Ha. It's a computer something's bound to go wrong is more like it. I love my Mac, but after you've lived through a kernel panic and system freeze or three, you know they're no more invulnerable than the next box.

Nightvol--that's really weird. This is just a shot in the dark, but have you tried clearing the browser cache, and then checking the read/write permissions on the cache directory? It almost sounds like it's looking for a file/cookie/something in memory that it thinks it has, but it doesn't. You might also want to try logging out at the top of the board and logging back in again.

Just as a heads up to see if anything's changed here, I still can't get into the chat, although IE seems now to function without freezing (although it might be luck...)

EDIT: Firefox seems to be agreeable now as well. Maybe it's only the main page and not that forums that my computer hates.

Here's what I see when I try to get to the chat:

Does it work with Firefox? If so, uninstall IE and get it out of your life. I prefer Firefox anyways.

Could you be any more rude and unhelpful? I mean, honestly?

Both browsers serve their own purpose.

Sorry, I meant that in a joking manner. I'm sorry if you were offended.

PS: out of curiosity, what purpose could IE serve?

maxxrox: oh, good. Just keep poking that dog with a sharp stick, even after you've been asked not to. Your little "joke" sort of negates the apology, doesn't it?

The website is the tool, not the browser. If you can get it to work, use whatever browser works.

In my case, my company's IT group has standardized on IE as the preferred browser for all machines, because it's easier to program for a single target. The internal work timecard website only works in IE and not Firefox. Since I like to get paid, I have IE on my machine, although I typically use Firefox.

This is a thread where we're supposed to be helping Nightvol solve a problem. If you don't have anything useful to contribute, can we at least keep the sniping to a minimum?

Kathy, have you checked out IETab? It's an extension that will display a page in Firefox using the IE renderer.

Thanks for the info, Garrett, but we're not supposed to be installing stuff willy-nilly on the work boxes. Scylla and Charybdis, it is. We're allowed to have Firefox, but IE is official for inhouse stuff.

I've managed to get the forums to a somewhat workable state, but the chatroom is still unusable. See the screenshot in my post on the previous page to see what I mean...

Hmm...I'm working on Vista, Firefox. Have you tried installing the latest Java Enviroment? I had to install it to be able to use all the features since I hadn't entered in a long time.

Or...I may have no idea, so you can just ignore me in that case.

                              Oh yes, I've installed the latest of both Java and Chime. It's just not working, is the problem ;_;

I'm surprised that this site gives you trouble with Vista. I bought my HP Pavilion DV2000Z and it came on January 9, and since then I've upgraded to Vista. I've never had any Internet issues with my computer. Although sometimes when I'm in a live chat window I can't scroll to the bottom of the conversation so I am looking at five or six lines behind. I am aware where the slider bar is, but it won't go down any farther. That's the only issue I have. I do use FireFox.
