  • Do you have an AOL email account? Please read this

    Friends,

Most of you will know that we only very rarely send out blanket emails to the Forum membership. This is for a whole spectrum of reasons -- including (a) so that we don't annoy you and (b) to keep your ISPs from mistaking us from spammers.

Subsequent to the most recent email about the contest for the A Wizard of Mars ARC, we had a couple of complaints from AOL that we had "spammed" two member email accounts. Since these members had explicitly opted in to emails from Forum administration, it may be that the spam reports were accidental or a result of the new home domain of the Forums (youngwizards.com) not being flagged as a safe domain in those users' email profiles.

Nonetheless, this morning we received a complaint about the AOL spam reports from our own ISP, FutureQuest. We must therefore take action to make sure that no more such complaints occur, as if they do we risk having YW.com chucked off FutureQuest for TOS violations.

We are therefore asking that all members who have AOL email addresses attached to their Forum profiles please replace them with other email addresses immediately. If this isn't possible, we will need statements (PMs, responses to this thread, or whatever) from those members setting out explicitly that they have opted in to emails from YoungWizards.com. (To be sure there can be no errors about this in the interim, we have turned off the "Receive emails from administrators" setting in all profiles of members with AOL email addresses.) We also need members who cannot change their AOL addresses to different ones to make sure that YoungWizards.com is whitelisted on their email accounts.

I know this is a hassle, but it has to be done. Some of you who are oldtimers will remember that in the old Forums at Infopop/Groupee we had similar problems, and to avoid them we had for a while disallowed AOL and Hotmail addresses entirely. We allowed that policy to lapse over time, but now it seems as if, at least as far as AOL is concerned, we will have to resurrect it in order to keep from being accidentally branded as spammers. No further Forum registrations with AOL email addresses will be allowed.

To all those affected by this, thanks in advance for helping us out.
