I certainly hope they make a movie or tv show. I mean, i'd still like to be able to talk about the series and at LEAST have everyone know SOMETHING about it.

That would be so darn awesome. A YW movie should definately be made. A TV series would be good too, but the flow of the storyline might be a bit off if they did that, but whatever. I want to play Nita! But that'll never ever happen. >D Changing am excellent book into a movie isn't doesn't always work out, though, but sometimes it turns out being a great film. It really depends on the director and how it was done.

Has everyone seen the older topic about this? DD has some posts in that one, and she isn't going to let the rights go to anyone unless she can write the first draft and have a veto over any changes.
So, if the storyline goes "a bit off", it'll be officially off

As opposed to the script for The Warrior's Apprentice, which apparently had cattle on the Dendarii warships, huh?Originally posted by Peter Murray:

ETA: ah, just found a summary of the script. It's even more painful than I had heard... http://lists.herald.co.uk/pipermail/...st/025263.html

Um. I haven't even read that book, and I get the distinct impression that DD has a very good reason for wanting the first draft and a veto over any changes.
JMS did direct Sleeping in Light, the last episode of Babylon 5. I think that was the one episode he directed. He also had a cameo in it, despite saying earlier that he would never do that.

Yeah. :-) Have you read any Bujold? If not, the first taste is free at http://www.baen.com/library/1011250002/1011250002.htm :-)Originally posted by Peter Murray:

I noticed that when I was considering editing the post, but decided that that didn't carry the same effect as watching a random Joss series, seeing that he wrote and directed, and realizing that we had to sit up and pay attention. :-)JMS did direct Sleeping in Light, the last episode of Babylon 5. I think a movie would be really cool as long as it stayed true to the book. I know that DD would make sure that the directors etc. didn't maim the plot or anything, but even when they try really hard to make a movie as much like the book as possible (like Peter Jackson with "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy), it's still difficult for them to capture the essence of the book. (By the way, I think Peter Jackson was one of the few people who actually succeeded in doing this.) I just hate to think that SYWTBAW might be reduced into a perfectly good movie that just didn't feel like enough, somehow. That's what the HP 4 movie was like for me; I enjoyed it, but I felt that it only scratched the surface of something much deeper. I'm sure DD will do an awesome job on the script, but the director/producer has to be able to make that script into an awesome YW movie.-------------------

Very few (if any) adaptations are entirely sucessful or liked, because there is always something lost in translation - books require imagination and thinking, whereas moves are simply a glut for the senses. I'm not saying there aren't good movies out there, but rather that books (with good writers) will often capture a scene much better than actors can, because it is being played out in our heads, and thus more perfect, as we can always relate to something that we are making up, but not always to something that is being shown to us.
At the same time, a few movies have succeeded admirably in the spirt, if not the letter, of the books that they were based on, and I think that would be a worthy goal to accomplish, as it would bring new readers to the domain to see what the universe really is, and to construct their rendition of it.
However, the impact of a YW movie, to me, seems fairly ambiguous. Will people understand that magic comes at a cost, and is not freely given and to be used as a toy? The world of Nita and Kit is not the simple black and white world of Harry Potter, where Slytherins are evil and Harry is king. People may not take to this world that has its complexities and responsibiilties and enemies that stay more in the shadow than fight you directly (except in HW). I wonder if the movie would be not-so-well-received because it required too much of the audience...?Omnia mutantur; nihil interit.

Yeah, that's a lot like what I was thinking. I mean, most movie audiences would be expecting a Harry Potter style movie (except for YW fans) and they might not be able to get the depth of the YW world, or might not even want to. And that's assuming that a movie can capture the book anyway, which, as Sean said, it would be hard put to do. Besides, what if, to appeal to the audience more, the producer purposefully oversimplifies the movie? I wouldn't be surprised; that's the kind of thing they do.However, the impact of a YW movie, to me, seems fairly ambiguous. On the other hand, I would really like to see YW get some more appreciation. I mean, hardly anyone in my school even knows DD exists. If a successful movie came out, even one that didn't completely capture the book, it would at least increase general awareness of YW. Which, now that I think of it, Sean also said. Okay, I guess I should just say I agree with Sean...
