I don't exactly understand the big deal about the glasses. The glasses don't really mean anything, and it hink it would be annoying to emphaize a meaningless fact in all the next books. Would you point out a friend who wears glasses everyday? its the same idea.

Maybe Nita decided to get contacts, or maybe she found that she doesn't need glasses anymore (somehow.. her eyesight improved)

As for the bunk bed, maybe nita decided to get rid of it during the hiatus between SYWTBaW and DW. Again, i think its another meaningless detail because it doesn't have any impact on the story.

For all we know, Nita fixed her own eyes when she became a wizard. Healing is one of her specialties, and it would save her parents' having to buy her new glasses every year or so.

Well, IceFlash, you obviously don't have glasses... No, seriously, if you wear glasses, boy are they important! I have a dependancy problem with mine- if i don't have my glasses IO start to panic! it makes sense that Nita would mention if she had contacts, or had fixed her eyes. I would talk about it!!! For example, in DW, they go under water. if she was wearing her glasses, she'd mention them getting wter on them, or getting covered with salt spray, or taking them off, or squinting- and if she'd fixed them, surely she would have thought "Wow, i'm so glad I ixed my eyes-' although obviously not in those words... Same throughout, I think... One of those unsolved mysteries??

my explanation for the glasses is just that it was a forgotten detail. SYWTBAW was written much earlier than the other books and in that book, Nita seems to be a bit more nerdy than in the next books. I think the glasses were a side effect of that image, and kind of got lost when Nita 'changed' for the next books. [no offence to anyone with glasses. don't hurt me.]

Adrienne, you'r not at all off. Ezcept for a mistype. In fact, I'm reading SYWTBAW right now and it mentions glasses and a bunk bed only once-ever. I do have a theory about the bunk bed. Maybe at one time Nita and Dairine shared a room and they had a bunk bed to save space. Then, after Dairine gets over a fear or something they get their own rooms. As for the glasses-maybe once you become a wizard if you wore glasses before you became a wizard your eyesight got better. I think contacts aren't at all possible because you'd have to take them out every night and put the back in every morning (my mom used to wear them).

Fact is, when you have glasses, you never forget about them. I've had mine since, um, 1st grade, I believe, and I have yet to forget I'm wearing them.

Have you ever seen a picture of some cyberpunk or somebody from the future, with all their robotic extras and pariphernalia? Or on a movie, like where Batman is suiting up? Grappling hook? check. Boomerang? Check.

Wearing glasses is like that. You wake up in the morning, and the first thing you do is grab your glasses. Next the watch, because you don't want to forget it. then you get dressed. For me, having my glasses off is equivalent to hitting "pause" on a game. Life stops. It means it's time to sleep. When you say "uhgmphv... gotta get up..." that means you're reaching for your glasses. Sure, you don't think about glasses, but you don't think about them the same way you don't think about your pencil when writing. It's there, you're using it, but that's just the means, not the purpose, no thinking about the pencil required. In one sense, I never think about my glasses, they're just some cybernetic extension of my "self." In another way, I think about my glasses every time I need to see something better, every time I wake up, every time I go to sleep, every time I get a headache. If you have 20/20 vision, do you think about your eyes? My glasses are

Good explanation. I tend to shower in the mornings, so I do that before my glasses, but the whole time i do it with my arms stretched out in front of me like a zombie: (How cute is that? We have an igor smilie...) i tend to panic if, for whatever reason, I can't find my glasses- it's almost a dependancy problem! And I'm constantly cleaning them. the stuff Nita does, i don't know if she could manage wearing glasses, just in terms of the time it would take haer to clean her glasses!! (Salt sea spray+glasses? NOT a good combination, believe you me.) And it never mentions her putting on/taking off her glasses or contacts in all those bits in Alone and Dilemma... it really is confusing.

In the book I have, SYWTBAW, I think I have the wrong cover, or something, cos I know she did have glasses, but on the picture she doesn't. I don't recall anything about a bunk bed, though...

SYWTBAW also mentions glasses another time.

"Bookworm, she heard the old jeering voices go in her head, four eyes...."

I don't seem to notice my glasses that much anymore...I always forget they're on so I don't take them off at night. The only time I do notice them is when my dogs give them a great big kiss..or that time one of the puppies chewed on the lenses.

Maybe her eyesight is adequate for some things, but not others. I am required to wear glasses for driving, but don't need them for many other things, and wearing them when I garden is just useless. I am presently typing sans glasses.

*hack dirt with hoe. Glasses go flying. Retrieve glasses. Note, grumbling, dirt smudge on lenses. Try to clean on shirt tail. Replace glasses on face. Sweat immediately drips onto glasses, blurring vision still further. Yank glasses off, place safely inside house, and proceed to abuse dirt without glasses.*
