Ah, the old mistaken fantasy = devil-worship prejudice. My sympathies. OTOH, you're 17, so it won't be too many years before you can go your own way, pay for your own internet access, and buy or borrow whatever books you want. Good luck. And maybe you'll find the words to help her understand. The only (weak) arguments I can think of are that one of DD's influences are the C.S. Lewis Narnia books, and that the Song in DW is modelled in part after Paradise Lost. Not much help, huh?

Well, thank you for your concern. I'll see what I can do, but I'm betting it will be futile...did you see my story yet?

Yup. That's how I knew you were 17. And no spell works if you think it won't, going in. :-)

Rad--if it will help at all, you might mention casually that the Narnia books include not only magic practitioners but at least one good--as opposed to outright evil--magician. And that CS Lewis is one of the 20th century's most respected Christian theologians.

But when you're mentioning CS, just don't comment on the Screwtape Letters...

I happen to know for a fact that C.S. Lewis is a Christian priest, so you're mom really shouldn't object.

Quill: letters from devil one to assistant devil? Whatever the themes, not quite parentally-approved fare. (Except for my mother, who reccommended them for a school project.) (Bearing in mind last time I skimmed them was when I was ten, for said schoool projet. I REALLY have to read them properly.)

Er...Lewis was a theologian and a scholar, but was in no way ordained.

Birdhead: it's true, some folks do miss the point of Screwtape, at least at first.

Glad my parents don't care about wizardry and such...

Actually...my mom's really into that stuff

                            STORY:
I used to go to the harry potter message boards (before the got all stupid), and somehow I got on the emailing list of some super anti-harry potter church...I got all these emails telling me that I was going to...well...you know...and my mom got mad and wrote all these letters about how is he was truly christian, this minister would support tollerence of all types of readers...it was actually rather interesting...

My mom's really cool about this stuff, of course, that might be because Judaism (especially reconstructionist) is alot more...liberal...than some forms of Christianity...

(Disclaimer: No offence ment to anyone christian or any anti-harry potter people. just stating my opinion. I totally respect everyone's religions. They're all super cool!)

Cool; your mom's Jewish? I guess that's where you learned the i-don't-want-to-insult-anyone attitude! Well, I totally agree with you about a Jewish parent being more laid back about Harry Potter and stuff. I guess it's because they're not so into everything being the work of the devil and they're not obsessed with converting people.

My opinion: Read what you want and have fun!
