I am a fantasy/sci-fi lover and found SYWTBAW while browsing through that section in the local Barnes and Nobles. Actualy, I made a friend by taking it to camp; a kid in a diff bunk had forgotten her copy at home <gasp>. When she asked me to borrow mine, I knew that she was a fellow fanatic and we are still friends. Sweet. Huh?

jen- actually, that's quite similar to how I met one of my best friends - I was reading a book (In The Hand of the Goddess) in the stand at school Athletics Day, and she started readign over my shoulder. That was six years ago... I consider myself to be in the debt of Tamora Pierce!

Just before Thanksgiving break, I was browsing through the local Barnes & Noble, looking for something interesting to read while lounging by the pool in Cancun, and SYWTBAW caught my eye. I thought it was some big joke, but I read the back cover, thought 'eh, why not?' and bought it. I read it in two days in Mexico and couldn't wait to get back (it's all the fault of those little teasers in the back of the books - drive me nuts, those do!). I promptly bought the rest of the series and read through them instead of studying for finals.

Needless to say, I was hooked.

Birdhead- I also love Tamora Pierce's books! I guess most people on this site have simliar interests. That's a realy cute story. I think it's cool that you're from NZ.

I bought my copy of SYWTBAW in sixth grade. I was scanning down a list of titles, and I saw this one. Did I want to be a wizard? Heck yeah!

Got SYWTBAW when it first came out. I was a big fan of Diane Duane's, mostly from the Door and Star Trek novels. The nice upshot is that, when I met Ms. Duane at a signing, and mentioned how I thought it was cool that Herewiss was the author of the Wizard's Manual, she told me I was the first person to notice (or at least the first person to notice and tell her they noticed.

I think I said this somewhere else but her goes, I accidentally bought the 5th one first. I decided not to waste my money and bought the first one. And I was/am hooked for life. Accident I think not.

About 4 years ago I was wandering through my school library looking for a book I haven't read yet and SYWTBAW caught my eye. I checked it out and here I am today!! lol!!

I got mine from my friends older sister. She said it was good so I read the first book and I liked it.

I saw SYWTBAW in a library several times, and then I finally rented it. I had to hide it from my mom, who doesn't like that kind of stuff. I was hooked, and then I skipped Deep and went on to High and Abroad. That was in 2000, and I just got around to reading Dilemma. I actually got my mom to buy it for me, but she still doesn't approve of it. I bought a copy of Support your local wizard off of half.com, and it should be here any day now...I'm trying to re-read the series. I read SYWTBAW at the bookstore the other day, and now I'm waiting for support to read deep and high. I still have to figure out a way to get abroad and alone...

Rad, good luck on getting the other books. Are there any arguments we can think up to convince your mother the wizard books are a good thing? (like, that they advocate telling your parents the important things going on in your life?)

Fox, Meisha Merlin's reprinted the first two books of the Tale of Five, with some additional editing by DD, in a volume called The Sword and the Dragon, if you're having trouble finding out-of-print copies of The Door Into Fire and The Door Into Shadow. They're apparently planning on bringing out the third (The Door into Sunset) and fourth (The Door into Starlight) in a collection called (tentatively) The Lion and the Door. DD just has to finish writing Door Into Starlight, but given all her other projects, that might take a while.

No, there is no way to convince my mom about them being good. I just got the copy of Support Your Local Wizard today, and when my mom saw it, she made a big fuss. I have a feeling if I'm not careful it's going to disappear soon...My family is Christian, and my mom is the most, uh, into it. Sure I believe all the christian stuff, but I also believe in Wizardry. I have a good reason for believing in Wizardry (see my last post in the thread in the SYWTBAW called The Oath and I have a link there that will take you to my story.) And about telling my parents things. My dad doesn't really care, my parents are divorced and my dad lives down the street and he's usually busy with his own stuff to know too much about what is going on. I have learned over the years not to tell my mom too much, b/c she'll blow her top and kick me off the internet. She already put a password on here that keeps me off most of the time, and she can keep me off permanently if she wants. She has blocked my e-mail before, too, and won't hesitate to do it again. If I can find some way to be a Wizard again (see my story), I'll be able to tell my mom more about the books very easily, but right now it's too risky. Of course, if you have any suggestions, please enlighten me.
