  • Well, Kathy mentioned it nearer the top of the page . So it wasn't really me who pointed it out.

Haven't you read any of the seven Narnia books? The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Horse and His Boy, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair and The Last Battle are the titles, listed in the order they take place, not the order they were written.

Or the BBC adapted four of the books for TV some years ago (books 2, 4, 5 and 6 of that list).

Or in the Oath haiku topic, there was the quote "Some kids who played games about Narnia, grew gradually balmier and balmier". (Hmmm. "Barmier" would make more sense there.)

Or my comments about references in DD's Star Trek book, The Wounded Sky included two references to Narnia books.

Or the books are just plain famous . C.S.Lewis was a colleague of J.R.R.Tolkien, so it's even possible you've heard it in a Lord of the Rings context (though Tolkien was apparently unimpressed by Narnia).

All of which is rather a book-oriented post for this topic, but it is related to the film of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Just the FAQs, ma'am: Chat, Board and Books.

    • It is "barmier"! Although I have to admit as an American kid I didn't know what "barmier" meant.

I went to see Star Wars and I have to admit, I've been wondering what Dairine would think!

I have to admit I didn't feel too much sympathy for Padme. She married somebody she knew had committed genocide (of the Sand People, Episode II). <span class="ev_code_WHITE">She doesn't totally abandon her critical thinking skills in the end,</span> but suz that shows lousy judgment.

The _weirdest_ thing I've read about the Narnia movies is that they're coming out with action figures. Action figures!?!?!? Somehow, that just strikes me as creepy. I haven't been able to find any pictures of them, but I'm just afraid they'll look cartoonish and wrong. <span class="ev_code_WHITE">Or worse, overly muscular/busty and wrong.</span> And... I know what the hair colors are supposed to be, but I still always think of Lucy as a brunette, thanks to Pauline Baynes.

      • Saw Star Wars and I'll have to say, I loved it. Though I don't like Haydeen's acting, and I don't like how they portrait the Jedi as this very intelligent and powerful community and then they show them making these ovbious mistakes, it's one of the best movies I've seen in a while.

The most touching part is, I'll have to say, the scenes where Order 66 is activated, killing all the Jedi Knights. The music alone would've touched me but how the music and the sad scenes merged was something only John Williams and George Lucas could've done.

Anyway, I recommend this for everyone. WATCH IT!

        • You know, people might to jump on me for this, but I saw the Star Wars movie and I thought it was terrible. The acting was awful (with the notable exception of Ewan McGregor); the plot was totally predictable (though I guess Lucas couldn't help that, really); the already-fantastical physics of the universe took a leap over the edge (how long does it take to get from Corsacant to a planet on the Outer Rim? The same time it takes to get to any closer planet, apparently...), and the dialogue was just bad.

I usually like a good love story. I'm all sappy like that, I admit it. And I did not care at all about Padme and Anakin. Their scenes together had no chemistry, though I suppose they did what they could with that terrible dialogue.

There were more than a few totally unnecessary scenes (<span class="ev_code_WHITE">the whole thing with the Wookies was just an excuse to have Chewbacca there. Because having C3PO and R2D2 there wasn't enough reminder of the original movies? I don't know.</span>) and I can count on one hand the scenes that I actually felt anything about: <span class="ev_code_WHITE">Obi Wan's lizard-mount was cool; pretty much anything with Yoda is cool; the crazy child-killing scene was disturbing, as was the rest of the Jedi-killing; and the twins going to their respective adopted familes was sweet.</span> On the other hand,<span class="ev_code_WHITE"> the fight between Anakin and Obi Wan too far too long, Anakin turned over to the dark side incredibly quickly, the lines Vader said once he was in his familliar black outfit were awful (we all laughed at them), and...it goes on. </span> And there were inconsistancies with the original movies, too.

I cry pretty easily at movies. I spent more time at this one laughing.

At one point, my sister leaned over and said, "Drop the ring, Anakin!" I just cracked up, and it was a so, so dramatic scene, too.

Hey, don't worry. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions. So even though I don't see how anyone can live without Star Wars, I know it's true, and if that's the kind of person you are, it's okay by me. It seems a lot of people, many more than I expected, have no idea what Star Wars is about. Mom came home with a report that several people had asked her "Is Luke in this one?" and she said she just stared at them and thought "Sure, as a two-minute-old baby who looks like he's six months." Lots of people I talked to said they either "Don't get" it or they don't like it.

Yet it seems that millions of people approve, due to this, and this, and even this.

            • I like the original three movies. I like them a lot, bad special effects and all. I'm a fan of fantasy and sf in a pretty big way.

I just think that Episodes 1, 2, and 3 are awful. Lucas went special-effects-crazy and forgot about little things like plot, dialogue, charaterization, and continuity, and most of the actors forgot about this little thing called "acting".

That being said, I DID go see all three movies in the theater, half because, well, it's Star Wars, they can't be ALL bad, can they? (or so I thought) and the other half because my best friend loves them for some reason. He doesn't usually like sci-fi, so I don't know what's up with that, but ok.

So no, it's not that I just don't like Star Wars, or science fiction, or anything like that - it's just that I think those movies were awful.

And just because a movie makes a lot of money doesn't mean it's any good. It just means people go see it. There's a difference.

Funnly enough No i have'ant. In fact I'm angry that Ive never read them and even more so that I thought for some strange reason that he Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was a picture book for kids!! I will try and get to read them BEFORE the movie release. I have to say though PM, Ive been in school for placement and they are reading this great book called Kanvoke (Dont hold me to that I cant find it on Tesco's web site! I might be wrong!) anyway I could not find it and instead I walked out with book 4 of the Darren Shan series (Vampire etc) and 2 Artemis Fowl books (Ive heard of them but never read them! not even sure of the order to read them!!!). I cant even rememebre the point of me writing this now!!

                • How could you NOT have read Narnia? They were pretty much the first books I read once I figured out how to read.
I didn't particularly like the new Star Wars either. Could the acting get any worse? Ewan McGregor was pretty good, but everyone else...well I just won't say anything more. The plot was not amazing either, and I completely agree about the special effects being all there was to it. There were some little kids sitting behind me who said that they should remake the first three and I was thinking 'NO! Don't kill the only good ones in the series. PLEASE NO! They were the only ones that weren't merely vehicles for the special effects.' I love the old ones, even if they are in the cheesy "bad sci fi" kind of genre. I've seen them SO many times, it's not even funny.

Ok, that's just strange . They do have illustrations by Pauline Baynes, and they may even be in colour (they are in one edition I've got). C.S. Lewis, from what I've read, approved all of the illustrations - eventually, when any corrections needed were done to his liking.
I will try and get to read them BEFORE the movie release.
You only have to read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe before then, of course - the others add to the history and future of the series, but the main characters in the film shouldn't know the history, and don't know the future, so it wouldn't matter.
Though you do have until December, with time taken away from reading Narnia to read WAW, so it would be possible to read them all.

                    • I haven't seen Star Wars Episode III yet, but I intend to...Monster in Law was pretty good though.

I haven't read the Narnia books, but I've seen two of the movies (the wonderworks version). I LOVE the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe movie...the Prince Caspian one was ok, but not all that great. I CAN'T WAIT until the new Narnia movie comes out...the trailer looks awesome!

                      • The actor Samuel West, who played Prince (and King) Caspian in the BBC adaptations, was also in DD's Ring of the Nibelungs film.

There was a film in the 1920s, directed by Fritz Lang, based on the Siegfried legend. I've been waiting for it to come out on DVD. (No, I wasn't born when it was made!) It keeps getting delayed - by about a year and a half so far, I think. It's now due out after WAW, in October of this year.

The Ring of the Nibelungs/Sword of Xanten film's UK DVD was supposed to be out in March, I think. Then it was May 2nd. I checked today, meaning to order it, and it's apparently been postponed to next January.

Is there a curse on Siegfried DVDs, or what?

                          • DB, if you can get your hands on it, you should read the original Stephen King short story, "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." I think it's better than the movie. I think the story's in the Different Seasons collection, along with the story stories that got turned into Apt Pupil and Stand By Me.

And if you liked Shawshank Redemption for the setting and story then you might also wanna see The Green Mile. If you liked it for Tim Robbins, then you might wanna see what he looks like when playing a sleeze, and rent The Player. Or just go see War of the Worlds this summer.

Just as a warning to others, Shawshank Redemption is a prison film, and there's a lot of violence. I'm pretty sure it's R-rated.

I saw the trailer for War of the Worlds, it looks great.

I saw Tim Robbins in Mystic River (the guy who kills the pedophile, right?) his character was creepy. He acts well.
