  • Well I think this whole forum needs a big:

    BUMP!

Theres one with footage, Kathy!!! *goes looking* I can't find it... did they take it down? Oh no... here it is; Don't Panic . Hmmm.. I don't mean to be picky, but where is Zaphod's second head? Hold on, is it down his shirt?! And it seems to be... Disneytised or something... Oh well, I'll probably see it anyway. Hey! its being released on a Friday - after the world has blown up?

    • I was wondering what happened to Zaphod's second head, too. People may mock the one used in the BBC TV series, but at least it was there. It looks as if you only see one at once in the film, from that trailer.

I can't decide if Marvin being small like that is insightful design, and really works, or if Disney have "cutified" him.

Maybe the world ends on the Thursday after the film's release?

      • Gah! My mom is being cruel! She won't let me read those books anymore! I loved the two I read, which happen to be the first and the fifth because my school library has an awful selection. But I told her I was reading them, and she said I couldn't! And I doubt she'll let us see the movie either, because when the ad comes on she makes us fast forward the movie. Grrrr.

And I'm being tortured, because the guy who sits next to me in Reading class has a colleted form of the books, all in one volume, and he reads it every day.

        • Why can't you read them? I can't think of anything unsuitable about the Hitchhiker's Guide books. Well, maybe the President of the Galaxy stealing a spaceship he's meant to be launching. And perhaps the character who keeps reincarnating. Or possibly the Award for Most Prestigious Use of the Word * in a Screenplay.

But apart from all that, why can't you read them?

Does she know the movie is being made by Disney ? Would that convince her it must be all right really? And that the books it was based on must be really nice books?

            • I have no comment on any of the Pokemon movies, I'm afraid, Gibby.

But I am going to see Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow this afternoon... y'all seen it? The trailer looks... really interesting, anyway.

              • PM, I think it might have something to do with some of the stuff in the fifth book. Not saying it here, but...

She also doesn't know about any of the "other" stuff I've read, some of which is MUCH worse. (I'm thinking Anne McCaffery and Tamora Pierce, and several other less known authors that I happened to find not-too-appropriate stuff in.)

                7 Pokemon movies? I've only seen...5, I think.

I like Yu-Gi-Oh better than Pokemon, but I guess Pokemon is okay.

                • Lisa-- well, maybe your mom will let you read _Hellblazer_ and watch Constantine. <laughs wickedly>
Seriously, I understand that there are people who object to any use of the f-word in a book, up to and including _Catcher in the Rye_ ... I just don't understand WHY there are people who object so strongly...
Honestly, anything in the Hitchhiker books that could be considered objectionable is handled in such a silly tone that I'm surprised anybody could take it seriously enough to object!

                  • I am half asleep at the moment (I only got four hours worth last night), due to seeing Bride and Prejudice and then going back to a friends house to chat for like ages.

Bride and Prejudice was good. Think 'live action Disney movie' and you've got it down pat (and before PM says anything - live action Disney cartoon. I know they do live action stuff too ). Lots of singing, dancing, and every random from the street joining in the songs. I haven't read the book yet, but from what my friends told me, it followed the story line pretty well.

What isn't appropriate about them, Lisa? The storylines in general? or does you mum think they're too 'old' for you? I can't think of what could be unsuitable about Tamora Pierce and Anne McCaffery, whose worlds are clearly fantastical and/or in a different universe (I know Anne McCaffery's are set in this one). But yeah.

                    • Anne McCaffrey? *chokes and splutters*

Um. possibly what Lisa could mean is the implied sex? And a lot of kissing? 'cause that's all I can think of, myself. Oh, wait, hang on, in the book of short stories one of them was about two guys making out. Um, I can't remember what the book was called, but possibly you mean that?

As for Tamora Pierce, I'm going with implied sex and snogging again. Oh, and nudity.

But I agree, it's pushing it. I know there are people who dislike any suggestion of romance in a book... but I think it's, well, a bit strange.

                      • Sry but I so can not comment on Pokemon without choking. I really want to see B&P now, but I can't for at least another week. Not COOL!
Can't wait for Hitchhiker's Guide. I didn't know Disney was doing it. Huh. I'm really not up to date on that kinda stuff.

                        • Yes, Tui, it's odd, thinking of McCaffrey as verboten material, but there is a lot of implied sex, and some not-so-implied, once I think about it. Restoree, for example, springs to mind, since it really is nothing so much as a romance novel with an SF setting.

talkingbeast: just what does Hellblazer have to do with Constantine? Sorry, sorry. I just can't help wishing they'd cast Jude Law or somebody else blond and British (the way JC is supposed to be) instead of Keanu Reeves.

I am soooo waiting for Sin City. The trailer's been a treat.

Alla, re: Bride & Prejudice, instead of "live action Disney animated", I'd have used the word "musical." Also "Bollywood." Also chickflick. ;-)

                          • Well, to be truthful, I've only read 4 Anne McCaffery books in my life, due to the fact that my mom forbid me to read them after she caught me reading Dragonsong and Dragonsinger.(But I went ahead and read two more anyway.) But yeah Birdhead, I think what you said would be right. She doesnt' have too much of a problem with the language, cussing, etc.
And she has no clue who Tamora Pierce is. I don't really tell her what I read, because I'm afraid of her banning me from certain books.

                            • Well, yeah, but I wasn't thinking of Restoree... hardly anyone's read that, and I confess it's not the sort of thing one just picks up, is it? The majority of readers will be into the Pern books first, or some other Mccaffrey. I'd totally forgotten about it, though- I can actually see why someone who'd read it might be uncomfortable with their kid reading it, depending on the age.

On the other hand, she took Dragonsong and Dragonsinger off you?? But they're an empowering tale of a young woman who fights for her destiny, shaking of the shackles of a conservative patriachal regime!!1!!!11!

Or something. (Wow, shaking off shackles sounds really crazy in the head. )

                              Uh-oh, cussing, heaven forbid...
... sorry, that was really nasty. I didn't really mean that how it sounded...

*amused* Unless she dislikes fantasy in particular, though, surely there can't be much wrong with Tammy... I suppose maybe the Song of the Lioness, but the Daine books are pretty much innocent, and as for the Circle of Magic...!

Constantine is the main character in the Hellblazer comics. The whole concept of Constantine started within the comic word, and he is now the star of his own comic series. If you want more information on Hellblazer and / or Constantine, you can check out the DC: Vertigo website.

To everyone that sayed something about the Pokemon movie.
Well, I know that Pokemon is not as big as it use to be. The fact is, I find Pokemon more interesting, in my opinion, then Yu-Gi-Oh. However, everyone has their own feelings on this subject. I was just stating that even though the movie is in the Pokemon franchise, I found it to be a good movie, from a movie perspective. I value all of your views on this subject, so keep it up, praise it or despise it, I do not care. As long as I like it, it will always be a topic of mine.

And to make this post fit with the rest of this topic, I just finished watching another anime called Metropolis. This anime has an interesting art style that is unlike any I have seen previously in an anime. It has a cartoony style, but the story stays within a realistic, yet fantasy setting.

Just as with the Pokemon movie, I am not going to state a lot about it for fear of spoiling anything about it. I like how it ended, which was differernt from what they were leading you too believe, and the characters, in my opinion, are easy to get to know.

I give this one a 4/5 for its creativity and uniquness. This is a highly recomended movie from me to all that enjoy anime in some form or fashion.
