I don't think DD is actually allowed to use anything that her fans have said on the forums- copyright issues. That's why there's a "no fanfiction" rule.

You could use the names you've thought of for a story of your own, though, or in off-site YW fanfic.

Well, as a writer I have lots of names xD Not necessarily alien names, as my book is set in an AU (alternate universe) arthurian britain, but still not...human lol One of my cities is named Tanackniatah (Tuh-Nack-knee-ah-tuh), there's a character named Telliandra (Tell-ee-on-druh), and several names of species I've created entirely on my own

I love to write. I also use alternative universes. Some nakes: Adile, Lightingfang, wave breaker. Oh, no one can use those names. They're going to be copyrited (as soon as I get a publisher)
I can create a world, out of letters and words. I can make you believe something in a paragraph. I can make you love someone in a page. I can make you go places that don't exist in a book. That's all the magic I need. [url]http://melpomene.freeforums

Are you joking, or do you really think you're going to be able to copyright names like "lightningfang" and "wave breaker"?

i never think of weird names...at least, not that often. (i'm great at thinking of cool names for places, not so great at thinking of them for people) last time i tried to give a monster a weird name, i found out i was cursing in a foreign language.
              I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

                  Kaila -

Depends on what you mean by "matter". In the grand scheme of things? No. In my life? No. To my curiosity? Yes.

who cares if people reuse the names...there's a limited amount of names people can actually pronounce anyways! and you'd be surpised how many weird names might turn out to actually be real names...though i doubt those are.

Nope. Not joking. The name "Harry Potter" is copywrited, as well as "Hermione Granger", "Ron Weasly", and (can you believe it? "Lemon Drops". A copywrite on a book characters name only means that another author wouldn't be able to use it as a character name in a book, or in the case of "lemon drops", as a passsword. It's done so that If I write a book about Lightning fang and call it "Lightningfang and the Star's Return", No one can just publish a book called "Lightningfang's betrayal " which would also be about my cast of Characters and then make loads of money ripping off my book. They used to do it by plots, but then plots became too simular. As for my names, yeah, they don't sound like names, but that's one of the subplots.

When I do get published, look for "Blue Mist in Black Sunlight"

I had to look it up:

What is not protected by copyright?

Titles, names, short phrases, and slogans; familiar symbols or designs; mere variations of typographic ornamentation, lettering, or coloring; mere listings of ingredients or contents

I believe you can get a trademark on a name, but not copyright. A cursory look says that UK copyright is similar to US in the basics, at least, so whoever told you that the name Harry Potter was copyrighted was mistaken.

The other night, I was just lying in bed and suddenly ,the name "harry" or "henry", I think it was, just popped up in my head. I have no idea why. And no, I'm not referring to "harry potter". Weird, huh.

well considering you weren't thinking about HP, then, yes. did you happen to be reading one of the HP books before you went to bed? 'cause that could explain it then.
