you have to take into account though that the increase was largely helped along by the fact that more people are recognizing it...it might have been around for centuries, but for centuries it wasn't exactly the habit of the average middle class person to take their kids to a docter who could examine their behavior for things like that...how many kids do you think might have had it, without their parents actually knowing it? the numbers may have increased, but probably not by as large amount as it seems at first, once you take those things into account....it's the same thing for why more and more kids seem to be wearing glasses. (more and more are bothering to get eye exams)
