Um, I hate to be the voice of dissent, but I didn't enjoy AWAl much. The plot just didn't grab me at all . . . There were some neat ideas, but I thought they were underdeveloped . . . The plot seemed incidental to the character's feelings, where it should go the other way around. A lot of details seemed just forgotten instead of left mysterious on purpose.

Also, it seems like the wizardry is just becoming too . . . convienent (sp?) I think is the word I'm looking for. The spells aren't hard to find and they seem to be more accessible and specialized easily. The most annoying example to me was the lucid dreaming spell. It's a *major tool* but it just pops out of no where. We don't get much background into how it works like most spells before. (ie the "beam-me-up" spell) I just didn't think it was well done. If it plays such a major part, we should get to know how it works.

The book also seemed a little didactic. There were a lot of ideas that I didn't agree with, and usually I think DD is very reasonable. Usually the books leave the judging open to you, but this one felt closed to me. Lots of the ideas conflicted with my personal beliefs, where things usually fit in the past. I guess I had problems suspending disbelief.

One thing I did like: the austism descriptions in the book! Great bubble, curtain, screaming, trapped imagery. However, its effects on Kit were really obvious and it bothered me that Nita didn't notice. I was like *HELLOOOOOO! Earth to Nita!* (Like Ronan in AWAb on the book-on-tape!) Her actions seemed a little too passive to me. She didn't seem to notice things like in the past.

Anyway, I hope these things are just an exception and that Wizard's Holiday is better! BTW, here's my rank of books:

    1 High Wizardry
    2 A Wizard Abroad
    3 Deep Wizardry (tie)
So You Want to Be a Wizard (tie)
    4 The Wizard's Delimma
    5 A Wizard Alone

You're asking me whether I liked A Wizard Alone?? Well i didn't, I LOVED it!!! (OK, so if you ask anyone who knows me well, they'll say that I read a ton of books and all of them are my favorites, so I don't really count)It was really interesting, and it was different from the other Young Wizard books.

O.k this is kinda on topic but none of us are known for staying on topic anyways so..

When Darryl said to Ponch "I see what you're becoming" what did he mean?

Well, this has been done in a couple of other threads... but I haven't aired my thoughts on it for a while, so I'll inflict them on y'all now. (NB: This is pure fun speculation, so...)

As I'm sure most of you remember, except the poor unfortunates who haven't read it yet (And what are you doing here, anyway? This is the Alone forum) during Alone Nita is reading the section in the manual on Orders of Being. It lists several sorts- mortals, wizards, Powers That Be, oddties like the Transcendent Pig, and then a few other more obscure ones which she hadn't met- specifically Thrones, Dominions (I think) and Pillars. (Presumably there are some others too...) We know what Pillars are; but we have no idea about Thrones and Dominions and that sort. Now, Ponch seems to be... gaining some sort of... well, it's hard to put into words, but.... OK, point by point.

-He's gaining a sort of... deeper feeling, particularly for others (like Nita; and even abstract people, which is unusual enough in humans!)
            -He's smarter
-Other dogs are looking to him; and listening to him
-He's doing unusual stuff (like finding new universes. But this doesn't really fit into my argument)

So... that's a pretty superficial analysis, but hey. Anyway, I think that Ponch is turning into another Order of Being. (That's if the whole thing isn't just some extreme symptom of wizardry leakage; but since that's what everyone thinks it is, I somehow doubt it.) Maybe a Throne actually, because that implies a single leadership... but this is probably right off the mark anyway.
Actually, there's a question to aks DD at next chat... can you change into a new Order of Being? Or is it set from birth?

Hmm. I never thought of that. DD will probably mention stuff about Ponch in WH maybe Wizards at War. OMG. Is Ponch a Power??? No..... He couldn't be...... Could he?

I doubt it... she did that already, with Peach; and also, if he were a Power, he'd be a lot smarter about concealing it, and possibly also a little more weird. Also, he would have had to be a Power from the beginning, and this stuff is a "becoming," a gradual process.

Oh, no way, whatever he is he's not an Abdal... it's just not right.

As for moving up in the Orders of Being, well, I thought about wizards, but a wizard is a potential wizard from birth. It's not something that happens suddenly; while by contrast I think that, if anything is happening to Ponch, it wouldn't have happened if, for example, Kit hadn't been a wizard.

Oh, wait... I might have answered my own question; it could have always been there in potential, but actual practise is conditional...

Ponch is NOT an Abdal/Pillar. No way. well... actually there's a possibilty except it's already been done and I don't think that DD is going to give us something old, she's going to give us something new that we've never heard about. Ponch is different.

                                Well, the sutism:

First, I don't know anything about autism. Given that, it might be WAY better to ask someone who actully does know a little; there are one or two people round who know a lot more than I do.

Secondly: well, although Darryl had shut himself away, he was still taking things in. He didn't completely restrict himself: he stayed changing and growing.

Thirdly: I didn't think there was a HUGEly odd discrepancy in his articulation. While he was very bright and articulate, you get the feeling he would have been pretty bright anyway.

Anyway: just my uninformed opinion at work.
