How?/?

Sorry to bother anyone but how do i log into the chat with DD on the 18th?

(1) Go to the top of the main Forum page and click on the link in the navigation menu that says "chat area". (You may like to "right-click" on it instead, so that a new window will open for this page.)

(2) When the login window comes up, fill in the chat area username and chat area password I sent you.

(3) The new page will come up. Wait for the chat area Java applet to load. (If you are using Windows XP, before you do any of this, go get the Java plug-in from http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html and install it.)

(4) Fill in your normal Forum username in the box that says "Username" and hit the "login" button. (You don't need another password.)

(5) The chat window will open, and the system will confirm that you've logged into the chat area. To chat, type your message into the blue bar, then hit the "send" button next to it.

(6) To log out, hit the "logout" button on the left side. You can also detach the chat window from the page by hitting the "float" button.

Have you got the plug in? Although I wasn't using XP I had to get the plug in- and if you are using XP, I think you definitely need it. That might be the problem- or maybe not, of course.

Well, it could be the browser. It wouldn't let me in using Netscape, but it was just fine using Internet Explorer.

Umm... I;m usually not online until past 7 EST (midnight Brit time) but on sundays I'm on an hour earlier... Probably the best time to catch me... 11 your time, 6 mine...

Ok. First of all...at what point are you getting this message? Go down the list of events that I gave you in the earlier message and give me a better sense of exactly when you get this message.

Secondly: if you're using a university machine...is it possible that it's firewalled somehow to keep it from using Java? Are you sure your browser has Java enabled?

We'd really like to do this, but the cost of non-Java chat clients gets prohibitive...and DD pays for this herself. She's moderately well off, but she's not rich.

We've occasionally given thought to using an IRC based chat, but a lot of users find that too technologically challenging: a Java-based chat seemed the best alternative, and the one we're using is the most reasonably priced of those at the moment.

Granted it could be the uni's computers, but I haven't probelms with Java-based chatrooms before. Teh brwosers are definately java-enabled.
I get the error message I described just after step (4) - after I hit the "login" button.
