Okay. I have too much time on my hands. Actually, made that had; I actually compiled this a while ago, before school started. So, here it is, a list of songs, book-by-book, that I think go well with the series.

    SYWTBAW

    That Day, Natalie Imbruglia
    Tomodachi (Friend), Sakamoto Maaya

    DW

Kiseki no Umi (Sea of Miracles), Sakamoto Maaya
Song to a Seagull, Joni Mitchell

    HW

    Black Balloon, The Goo-Goo Dolls
    So Sweet, Maria Mena

    AWAB

Little You and I, Jason Mraz
    Tam Lin, Past Times

    WD

Julia, The Beatles (the obvious choice, no?)
    Tangerine Dream, Do As Infinity

    AWA

    Sanctuary, Sakamoto Maaya
Send In the Clowns, Judy Collins (perhaps my sense of humour is a little morbid...)

    WH

I'll Follow The Sun, The Beatles
Kuuki to Hoshi (Air and Stars), Sakamoto Maaya

    WAW

The Garden of Everything, Chris Mosdell/Sakamoto Maaya
    Quiet, Rachael Yamagata

    ------

I realize that some of the song titles pertain so directly to the books that it sounds comical, but seriously, this works for me. So give at least some of these songs a listen. And feel free to suggest some other songs ect, ect...this list definitely needs some work.

I always thought Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles was quite a nice one for Alone- especially considering its winter setting. And Hey, Schoolgirl by Tom and Jerry is my personal default Kit+Nita (or. you know. N/K if you prefer) song of all time, as The Only Living Boy In New York is my Tom and Carl song (which is SO NOT MY FAULT. "Tom get your plane ride on time/I know that you'll be able to shine now/Hey, let your honesty shine shine shine/like it shines on me."

Otherwise I can't really think of songs for specific books, only for characters in the context of individual books. Princes of the Universe by Queen as the Alien Invasion crew in Holiday, just because that's the funniest idea ever... I Love My Dog and Sad Lisa as Kit songs in Alone. *snorfle* Little People (Gavroche's song) from Les Miserables for Dairine in DW! Bad Reputation for Dairine in Abroad. Superman by Lazlo Bane (the Scrubs theme tune) for Nita in Holiday... I could go on and on.

*struggles not to mention To The Moon and Back by Savage Garden in any context, especially not Dairine/Roshaun, nuh-uh. I don't even ship D/R*

ETA: oh the obvious one: The Sound of Silence for A Wizard Alone. In the most perfect way.

Oh dear. An unbeliever. (In case this wasn't obvious, I'm a rather big Dairine/Roshaun shipper). Now I must revisit "The Moon and Back" for the sheer YW context.

Now I have some things to Limewire And yeah, "Here Comes The Sun" would be great for Alone, but I like it in Holiday too, for it's sheer sense of wonderment, ect...I think it fits some of the themes and scenes in Holiday rather well.

There are at least four songs I can think of that go really well with YW:
-SYWTBAW: Not Done Yet (Superchic[k]) (This goes well with the part when Nita and Kit are reading from TBONWM)
-DW: Song of the Sea (Emilie Simon on the French soundtrack for March of the Penguins)
        -AWA: Imaginary (Evanescence)
-Also, the song Whisper by Evanescence seems YW-ish to me. Oh and BTW, is "The Moon and Back" the Savage Garden song?? I LOVE SG hehe

Oh, it's obvious, all right. And it's not that I'm an unbeliever, per se. I can see it well enough, and I think there's tonnes of stuff in the canon to support it happily, I'm just not particularly invested in it- as opposed to Nita/Kit. Speaking of which, another good Nita/Kit song is If She Wants me, by Belle and Sebastian. "If I could do just one near-perfect thing I'd be happy/They'd write it on my grave or when they scattered my ashes/On second thought I'd rather hang around and be there for my best friend if she wants me."

This kind of thing makes me obscurely, sillily happy. I am going to download all of the songs and make a playlist. :P

Psst, Alida: Have you got a Japanese(?) title for Tangerine Dream? Because the illegal filesharing network I'm totally not using doesn't have the English titles when I search that bandname.

Heh, I saw this topic the other day and didn't start thinking of songs at the time, but today at work I was listing to a CD I borrowed from my parents - some ABBA collection - and kept bursting out laughing as I realized that one song after another could be made to apply to *some* scene from the books. Then when the melody of one of them ("Waterloo") reminded me of the song "Build me up Buttercup", it called to mind the end scene of There's Something About Mary where the whole cast goes into some crazy dance number, which in turn made me picture these songs not as background music, but the characters in the book interrupting their dialog to sing instead :-)

Let's see, we have Waterloo being sung by Esemeli, the ambivalent version of the L.P. at the end of WH:
My, my, I tried to hold you back but you were stronger
Oh yeah, and now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight
And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Likewise, a song "Ring, Ring" as a duet for Nita and Kit not-calling each other throughout AWA; The whole gang singing "He is your Brother" to the Champion and the LP at the end of HW; and various others that fit assorted interpretations of romance-to-come.

And then (setting this album aside) there are the various songs actually mentioned in the books: The end of Faust is ruined for me as anything but the humorous prelude to a dino attack; likewise for Nessun Dorma (well, they still are great music, but I can't imagine hearing them now without picturing that). And for anime music, there was the passing reference to the song "Nagareboshi he" in AWD which was fitting.

I was actually considering making a topic like this after reading a few things buried in the HW, Dilemma, and Alone forums, but it looks like Alida beat me to it. ^^'

*goes to dig up the old topics*

"A collection of songs relating to the book" (High Wizardry)

              "Help!" (Dilemma)

              "Musical observation" (Alone)

For me, there's a difference between picking out songs for a soundtrack, picking songs that go with the books, and picking songs that remind you of the series. I can't think of anything for soundtrack, simply because any of the songs that remind me of the books seem really out of place when I line them up with the scenes in my head. Songs that go with the books are actually a whole lot like soundtrack, and it works the same way, only different somehow (maybe it's that I can't listen to music and read at the same time). Picking out songs that remind me of the books is easy enough, though, for the most part.

There's Stars, by Switchfoot: looking at our planet/watching entropy and pain/and maybe start to wonder how the chaos in our lives can pass as sane... it reminds me of just about the whole series. Leaning toward Dilemma a little, maybe...

And there's one line in a Johnny Cash song, Redemption, I think, that goes "and a small inner voice said 'you do have a choice'", which sounds like the Whisperer to me.

Maybe Chimaira's Down Again *lyrics* remind me a little of Darryl in Alone, but I think it's overpowered by the fact that I didn't notice at all until I was reading the lyrics while trying not to hear the actual song going through my head. After the words are connected to the song it doesn't remind me of Darryl anymore.
"Will it stop or is it only beginning

              Here on the inside
              My life is not over
              I'm down again

Fake smiles surround me all day
              No more can I tolerate"

Heh, I think I've had too much time on my hands for a while.

Sorry, Tui, no Japanese title for that song...I think they use the tithe Tangerine Dream over there too, and I can't find the kanji/katakana for it. Sorry again.

I need to find "Nagareboshi he" now, thanks for that tip-off, Ardub. And "Ring, Ring" sounds like a mildly adorable complement to that scenario (NK fluff= the love).

Y'know, Tui, this is kind of strange, but I'm the exact opposite-- N/K? Whatever. D/R? HELL YES.

                    SYWTBAW- "Mad World" (Gary Jules[sp?])
                    DW- "Helena" (My Chemical Romance)
HW- "Good is Good" (Sheryl Crow)
                    AWB- "My Immortal" (Evanescence)
TWD- "A Ghost of You" (Good Charlotte)
AWA- "Boulevarde(sp?) of Broken Dreams" (Green Day)
                    WH- "Hotel California" (The Eagles)

Some might call it odd and such, but I think it's good.

Hm. I wouldn't have picked um, Green Day, but yeah...I can sort of understand where you're coming from. For pop music, you've weeded out the stuff that matches well. But I just...don't really like that music. So maybe I should have called this topic YW Playlists, because there will, of course, be many different genre playlists as well.

Yeah, I had my doubts about Green Day too. But They're the only artist that I could think of. There was about 5 seconds where I had something else but then forgot it.

Hello by Evanescence sounds good to me. but HW song Long, long Journey by Enya.

Evanescence seems so YW-ish to me too. i'll compose a list for this and write ya back. oh, a Carl song: She has no time by Keane. Dairine: Can't Stop Now by Keane. Keane's lead singer is a Tom through.

Sounds of Silcence is a great one for SYWTBAW.

Evanescence has never struck me as particularly YW-ish...a bit too pop-culture "deathy", if you ask me (but I'm a musical snob, so there you have it). To me, YW has always been a bit of a series that demands either a) foreign music b) indie music or c) 60s/70s/80s music. But that's just me

Oh, a new suggestion: "Moonchild" by King Crimson for SYWTBAW.

I was listening to my crazy playlists in iTunes, and found Jack Johnson. For anyone who doesn't know, Jack Johnson sort of sings...well, my dad calls them hippie songs. I don't know...they just remind me of the summertime and vacations on Hilton Head Island (well, not all of them do.) But one of the songs reminded me of YW in general. It's called Never Knowing...don't ask me why it reminds me of YW, it's really really hard to explain. Sort of, I don't know, it reminds me of the scene at the end of SYWTBAW in Timeheart, I guess. *shields herself from people who think she's crazy* My taste in music is...odd...to some people. XD So, that's my suggestion for now.
