  • Wow, tough question. I definitely believe in magic, many forms infact. I think there is something out there in the universe, so small or so large we can't comprehend it. Such as atoms. Magic is something we don't see, but I think is there. We haven't even explored our whole world nevermind our whole galaxy to say what is and what isn't. There could be another dimension out there, millions of dimensions that we can't access. I would reccomend watching the movie What the Bleep Do We Know to explain my theory further. Don't ever stop believing, lest you fall into a world where the stars don't shine.

    • The "What the %&#* Do We Know?" film has been discussed (and torn to pieces) on the Magic Real? topic already.

I got the impression it was made by people who just want to believe they can control events with their mind, and interviewed mostly people who agreed with that.

      • Being a devout Catholic, I don't believe in magic or magick.
I believe that there are things out there beyond what we can see or know. I think that while the Bible speaks the truth, it has been edited so many times that for all we know, magic may be a part of Christianity.

An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in anything.

As for magic, I believe! I've taken the Oath a few times....

an atheist is NOT someone who believes in nothing. a nihilist believes in nothing. an atheist believes that there is no personified deity... no "god" that is more than a collection of principles... which is really, largely, the position of many theologians but stated with far less tact and elegence.

personally, i believe that magick is the point where applied science and applied religion/mysticism collide... it is the FULL understanding of unified field theory and relativity theory put into practice through various means...
just like alchemy is just chemistry, is just baking/cooking... it's a matter of understanding things through a larger perspective in far more minute detail. mysticism is just the observation of patterns in time and space, and magick is manipulating those patterns.

          anyone else feel that way?

          • You might want to check the date before you post replies, gaianbeatnik - that comment was posted over two years ago. Also, someone did explain the difference between a nihilist and an atheist right after it.

Though since the subject has come up again, I'll say that I as an atheist don't actively believe that there is no god. Or any collection of principles...I'm not sure what that means, anyway. I simply don't believe in god. And I don't see what tact and elegence has to do with it, really - many religions have neither.

            • Since I was kind of younger when I made that last post, lol, I would like to revise it a bit. I believe that magic exists in all of us and that there are wizards and they are constantly saving us from our mortal destruction. But there are many reasons for me not to believe in anything. Even though, I think wizardry likes to disguise itself until it wishes to be revealed and only then is a Wizard created with the knowlage, the true knowlage that magic is real. I dont think that this is a knowlage that can just be learned. It will come to whom it chooses and who it can reside in. "Magic will not live in the unwilling heart..." and I think that many people really arent willing. Well, in time, I think that anyone who truly wants something from wizardry can achieve it only if it can be achieved. Well, that is slightly my philosophy on magic.

              • Often, people use "atheist" to describe someone who has no beliefs, or who is not religious, or who disbelieves in the supernatural. While all of these people would indeed be atheists, that is not the full meaning of the word.

"atheist" comes from Greek roots, "a" meaning "without", and "theos", meaning "god". An atheist, therefore, is someone who does not include a god or gods (or godesses) in their belief system.

By this definition, Bhuddists are atheists, as are Scientologists and nihilists. However, in common usage, when someone calls themselves an atheist, what they usually mean is that they have a general disbelief in religion of all types, often including supernatural beliefs of any sort. This is certainly what I mean when I use the term to describe myself.

When the term is being used to describe someone else, it can be much harder to determine what is meant, although "heretic" or "infidel" often capture the sense in which is is being used.
