Well, it's not official, and nothing's a given when it comes to network scheduling. I mean folks were proclaiming the end of Dollhouse last year, too. The best articles I've ever seen about why a show does or doesn't get cancelled is thefutoncritic's series "Ten Things You Need To Know About the New Season".

I will say that the Fox Friday night slot o' death, however, does have an inordinately large number of sf/f shows that die an untimely death. Dollhouse is the only Fox Friday night newcomer to get renewed in 10 years. Asking for a second miracle may be greedy.

For me, I've learned that, just as books are about the author, tv shows are about the showrunner. Joss will do another show. We'll find him. He'll find us.

What I did find kind of interesting, though, is that Craft & Fain, who were on Dollhouse last season have moved over to be exec producers on Lie to Me, while Fazekas & Butters, who were the showrunners for Reaper are now on Dollhouse. That both teams are female is also kind of interesting.

And I've figured out why Castle is so much fun for me--some of the writing staff/producers are guys who used to work on Dark Angel, namely Jose Molina (who, btw, wrote "Ariel" on Firefly) and Moira Kirland. And, of course Ben Edlund (The Tick, and the "Jaynestown" episode of Firefly) keeps me watching Supernatural, much as the fact that Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) occasionally writes for Heroes keeps me watching that clunker.

Follow the writers. Don't worry so much about the series.

      Darnit. It's official. From thefutoncritic:
      [11.11.09 - 12:48 PM]
FOX TO CAP "DOLLHOUSE" SEASON AT 13 EPISODES
      By Brian Ford Sullivan (TFC)
LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- FOX has passed on ordering additional episodes of "Dollhouse," network sources have confirmed to the site.

The network however was quick to stress the series hasn't been canceled as they are simply capping its second season at 13 episodes. The show's fate will then ultimately be decided sometime next year.

As previously announced, "Dollhouse" will return with back-to-back episodes on December 4, 11 and 18 before resuming its regular Friday, 9:00/8:00c slot on January 8.

The news comes as FOX preps its midseason schedule, which is expected to be announced soon.

[UPDATED: The Hollywood Reporter's story indicates it has indeed been canceled, meaning we were just given the company line of never actually admitting something is canceled. We apologize for any false hope this story may inadvertently generate.]

[UPDATED #2: Creator Joss Whedon has commented on the news to Whedonesque.com, saying "I don't have a lot to say. I'm extremely proud of the people I've worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you'll agree in the coming months. I'm grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again. I'm off to pursue internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I've read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you'll know what my next project is. But for now there's a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear."]
