THAT. IS. SO. HORRIBLY. WRONG. That's EXACTLY the kind of thing that teachers are supposed to avoid AT ALL COST, unless you go to a private school. Especially English teachers and History/Social Sciences teachers, because their subjects are more delicate when it comes to POV's. This is the kind of thing that discounts the entire Heaven-Earth-Nation-Ancestry-Teachers thing. Teachers are supposed to be impartial to personal opinions; they're supposed to ENCOURAGE expression and the practice of "seeing all sides" of a piece; if you can't view a work from multiple angles, then WHAT IS THE &*%^@#$ POINT OF TEACHING IT!!!??? You may as well tell people to read Spot the Dog instead of Number the Stars!!! You may as well be leading the Hitler Youth!!! That's exactly what they did! ARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!

I'm rather opinionated about this... sorry. It's just that the integrty of teachers and the ideal of freedom of speech/expression are two of the few *VERY few* things I'm really adamant about.

And I have a friend like that. Her hair is currently blue (although before that it was purple, and before that it was bright red, and before that it was an icky sort of rotten-spinach-green, and before that I can't remember), and her last English teacher was a very devout Christian and extreme rightist... whereas she was a proud atheist and extremely liberal. Similar situation, no? Except my friend turned it into a bit of a silent, one-sided war (her teacher seemed to refuse to allow herself to aknowledge this).

...and has anyone else noticed we all spell mayo differently?

That completely sucks. Aurie, uhm, I didn't mean to imply your friend didn't know the material. I was just pointing out that creativity isn't always good. (Your point about the poem... I'd need to know the poem to comment.)

Anyway... you're right about teachers. Except I know that sometimes people use "that teacher hates me!" as an excuse. They don't think they deserve the marks they got, so they blame the teacher. Soemtiems it's true but, honestly, sometimes work isn't adequate. (also, there are some interpretations, even in a subject like English, that are WRONG. Because they're subjective, people have problems with this.)

Sorry, had to get that off my chest- I know soemone who's been whinging about it a lot and frankly it's all I can do not to tell her that, if she wants a good mark in Performance Guitar, she NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO READ MUSIC. Being able to play more than just chords would be nice too. it has nothing to do with how well the teacher likes her: it's just not an adequate standard. </whinge>

semiramis is indeed correct, quelling creativity is essentially against what our civilization stands for. Without creativity, we are undone. As to Tui's point, sometimes the teacher quite simply does hate the student. I have an associate at whom every single teacher takes the opportunity to yell. And it's not because he's any louder than any of the other idiots, if anything, he's more civilized than the others.

I actually agree with Tui's standpoint, too, mwee. My eigth grade History teacher was the first teacher I was absolutely certain hated me; nevertheless, she was completely impartial when she graded my work--I admire her for that (and because she's the only teacher I've ever had who's spotted my "fluff-out" essay technique that I use when I'm in a rush ^.^). I also could not tell my second grade teacher absolutely DISPISED me, and only knew when my mother told me four years later--which is also impressive ^_^. But the point of those examples is that most teachers are actually more inclined to try to avoid being harsher on students who they don't like because it's a form of favoritism (anti-favoritism?).

What really irks me is when they don't bother to do the same for different opinions, which is more abstract than favoritism, and therefore harder to detect. Which makes some of them think it's okay; I've, as of yet, only had one or two teachers like that, but they were for "concrete" subjects which didn't involve opinions, so that wasn't so bad. Of course, grading a student down as an individual is bad, too, but real cases of that are just so rare as to be ridiculous, so I can't really say anything about that. Which is not to say some teachers (indeed, most teachers) actually will truly hate some students; it's just that, most of the time, they try hard to hide it at least in their grading, if not in their actions.

my teacher is also a hard marker...

I remember my sixth, seventh and eighth grade teachers... they didn't like me, and they went out of their way to tell me to "Be more ladylike." I didn't do especially well in school, but I didn't realize it until I went to high school and watched my grades jump a good five or more percent up. My average, which was 84% in elementary school, as my grade gradauting, skipped up to 88.6% as my finishing average for grade 9... And it's skipping higher now too.... last report card, it was 89.5%...

semiramis? What is your avatar, I've always wondered that. I just sit here for five minutes and stare at your avatar trying to figure out what it is. Please tell me.

Aurora: Oh, okay. Just curious ^.^v. You don't happen to go to a private school, do you?

Okay, now I know what it is. But it still doesn't look like anything small. I used to not like one of my teachers. But now I feel sorry for her because her 1st husband had cancer and died from it and now her 2nd husband has cancer. It is really sad.

No, I've been in public schooling all my life, my parents don't have the time or money to send me to a private school.

I don't see what the big fuss is about for private schools either. I knew a girl in private schooling... she's really snobby... I hate her guts, but she thinks she's oh so smart, but she ISN'T. Well, sure. she gets grades equal to mine, but what is it worth in the end? I have equal chances of getting into university, and better chances of surviving the world.

In the end, public, private, it doesn't matter. You both have equal chances. And besides, did I mention how I regard private schools as completely unnecessary?

Heh. That might be partially because the one on devart is a PNG, which has no loss, and my avie's a JPG, which has loss.

Aw, that's really terrible... I had a cousin who died of cancer, and he was only fourteen... terminal diseases are always so sad...

(edit): Arrgh! Someone keeps on posting just before I post my reply!

I asked because private schools sometimes are more lenient about how their teachers do their grading, but not always.

I'd stick out in a private school... you have to be rich there, or you get no respect from other students... I'd hate that. They're mostly snobs who go "I'm better than you" and I absoluestly hate that...

Actually, I have a friend who went to a private school for a while, and only about four students were like that, aparently (sp?) (although this is out of less than twenty, so that may not be saying much). But, then again, she's the daughter of a well known, well respected professor, so she might not be a very good example....

Okay. Here's the lowdown on private schools from one who knows (or should.)
                                - I go to one. Don't diss them too loudly, I'll get all offended.
                                - Not everyone who's at a private school is rich: and private school students are SO NOT snobby about money. Maybe they're nicer to people who have LOTS of money, but they're not un-nice to those who don't. I should know: scholarship student, me. ^^
                                -
They're mostly snobs who go "I'm better than you" and I absoluestly hate that...
.... uhm.... I'm not better than you, and I love you.Balance redressed?

More to the point, yes, some students are like that. but frankly, Aurie darling, you've done that yourself. I don't think it's in any greater or lesser proportion than to, say, the students from High who floowed me home on the bus and threatened to kill me. Don't get me wrong: msot people who go to public schools are lovely. So are most people who go to private schoosl. but just as you have the Renees of the world, who go to private schools and are UNPLEASANT, you have the Emilys of the world, who go to public schools and are equally UNPELASANT. On the other hand, it's true that in private schools you get misperceptions. My school is predominantly white; my ebst friend goes ot a school that's known for being multicultural, and she's been asked, in all seriousness, if she "gets beaten up lots by hose Poly[nesian] girls." This is called "racism" and it's also UNPLEASANT. But this stuff is founded in ignorance and rumour: because despite Fetu, who goes to our school is Samoan and wouldn't hurt a fly (except when she's playing touch. *winces*) there are people at my school who thinks big Polynesian girls are physical bullies. Not true. Just like at public schools where people think private students are constantly doing drugs/wagging/looking down their noses/think they're better. It's also UNPLEASANT and it just ain't true.

                                Er. yeah. IT'S A LIE!!
