Ok, usually, i would NOT create an entire topic to talk about eye wear, and all of it's annoyances (Or benifits) but it seems to me that talking about it in behind the avatar is getting a bit out of hand (half the posts are about glasses!) so i figure i might as well get the conversation shifted to over here before we completely take over the otpic, and get yelled at for it...anyways, anyone who wants to talk about glasses, do so here!
    I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

Nah, don't feel guilty about starting a whole new topic. There are things that just need to be by themselves, but there are some here who don't understand that.

Well anyway, since this is a thread about glasses I'll just talk about them... Luckily I don't need them, at least not at this point in my life. For some reason my mom thinks that my horrible handwriting is because of blurry vision. But I can see just fine. Although I didn't do as well as I usually do on my last vision test at school. I can read fine, I can see clearly all the way across my yard and see road signs farther than my parents can, so I don't care what the nurse or my mom says.

Although my grandfather has been having difficulty seeing lately. My aunt works at Lenscrafters, in fact she manages the lab in the one closest to us. She's been doing a lot of work with his glasses. She made him a new pair of bifocals (Excuse me if that's spelled wrong, I'm not using FireFox now) and the bifocal part of the lens, the lower part, was adjusted wrong so he had been getting double vision. So what she's going to do is to make a pair, non-bifocal for now, so that he can see and pass his driving test that's in a couple weeks. *Dreads the thought of grandfather not being able to drive* After that she'll add the bifical part on and get everything right, and grandfather will have passed his driving test. Oh, I call my grandfather Pop-Pop, so if I say that I'm referring to my grandfather.

That's all I have to say about glasses. Thanks for listening!

      I've worn contacts since I was 14.

And I disagree. Feel guilty for starting this topic. Not a lot, but just a little.

It's time for one of my periodic netiquette lectures, now that summer boredom and newbies are upon us. Please, guys, remember what this board is here for, and why DD pays for its upkeep. This is supposed to be a board to discuss the YW books.

Shooting the breeze here in the Chatter II section is all fine and well, but the ONLY thing you can count on folks having in common here is that we all like the YW books. When well over 90% of the posts that are being written are about anything except YW, I feel like pointing this out.

If you're bored, try rereading one of the YW books, and then posting about what you noticed or didn't notice this time around. If you're dying for WoM, go do some research on Mars and come back and tell us the cool bits. If you're bored, go write an Oath Haiku. In short, can we try and get more YW-related in our topics?

DD isn't paying for this board to be your personal substitute for LiveJournal or AIM or a cellphone or MySpace. This is to help foster and build and connect a YW community.

Just ask yourself what you're helping to build here when you post. That's all.

Ok, back to your regularly scheduled discussion.
      ----

I've always kind of wondered if Dairine is ever going to switch from having glasses to wearing contacts. (Or did she do it already, and I just missed it?)
New to the board? Please take the time to read the YW Board-Specific Rules, or Why We're Not Like Other Boards FAQ.

Wait, wait, Dairine wears glasses? I just re-read Holiday last week, and it's got her rubbing her eyes and wondering if she might have to get glasses like Nita (although Nita grew out of needing them), so I dunno. (Unless you meant Nita to begin with, in which case there's the answer to that, too.)

I've had glasses since I was eight- I remember being slightly annoyed at first, because I thought that everyone saw things just a little blurry. Being able to see license plates and the leaves on the trees was nice, though. And I don't think I could do contacts... :P

I've got lenses, I had glasses for a while, but I kept scratching them and I just didn't wear them at all. since I got my lenses there's no such problem.sure, they might dry up a bit, but all in all they work better for my than the glasses...

I agree, it seems like things are getting totally off topic, and the DD chats don't even involve the YW series at all. I remember when I first came here (it wasn't that long ago but it seems like it was) that I was a bit mystified that here we have "youngwizards.net", a place specifically designed to discuss confusing things about books, and there's basically no YW talk in the chats. I did notice, though, that many, MANY of the threads for the books are closed. For example, in the A Wizard's Dilemma section, there's only ONE thread open! Maybe opening many of the threads, that is the ones under the books sections, (others not involving the books can continue to be re-opened upon request) will help to get more YW discussion in.

i do feel a bit guilty for this thread truthfully..i mean, it seems a bit weird having a topic on glassses in a youngwizards book site! but i figured it was better then having glasses take over ANOTHER topic, as it was doing...personally, i STILL can't wait for contacts..my glasses are always getting bent up, and it's annnoying taking htem with me everywhere...plus, i lost their cases. *looks sheepish* well, broke one, lost two... and eric: maybe you have disgraphia. that's what i've got...makes for horrid handwriting. (or you could just have bad handwriting. Either way, it comes down to the same thing really...handwriting no one can read! And, in my case, the school supplying computers for me to type on!)

...i...have glasses, and it's a good idea for me to wear them, cause like wf, said, it's good to distinguish the leaves on the tree. or in my case it's a good thing to be able to distinguish trees from the lawn and the green paint on my neighbors house. >.< now having said this...

i just realized. i havn't seen my glasses since like, summer started. >.< i have the feeling that they're in my room somewhere, but i've torn it completley apart 3 separate times, and have yet to find them.

                i'm..., not...totally blind without them?

For some reason when I was younger I always wanted glasses, but never needed them. But then my senior year in highschool and freshman year in college I noticed that I really did start needing them because I couldn't really see the board well. So at the end of May 2005 (when I was 19) I finally went to an eye doctor and got some glasses. I really like them, though it's slightly annoying to actually NEED them. Especially now that I have a stronger prescription. (Got some new glasses a few weeks ago) It's really odd to not be able to see stuff clearly...

Well now that I think about it, this IS the Chatter II section, so we can talk about whatever we want here... In fact, the introduction to Chatter II says "A place to talk about stuff that may only slightly involve the "Young Wizards" books (or not at all)." However, what we DO need to work on is to stop getting off topic in the actual book discussion sections, and in the DD chats.

I think it was good to start this topic separately from the other one before the other topic started getting dominated by talk about glasses...

Oh, sorry to interrupt the glasses conversation.

In one of the books (for the life of me, I can't remember for sure, but I'll check) Dairine and Nita are talking, and Nita asks her to not tell something (I think). Dairine's like "Come on Neets" and we hear Nita's reflection--when Dairine had needed glasses, when she was getting beat up at school (not sure if that's right), no one had heard it from her.

I used to have Harry Potter-esque glasses, when I was completely obsessed with the books. But they weren't the best fit for my face *grimace*. Now my glasses are more rectangular in shape; somewhere between rectangle and oval. I prefer wearing my contacts, though, except when I'm feeling lazy .

That was in Deep Wizardry when Dairine was out on the swing telling Nita she knew she had fallen out of the window in the middle of the night. I just reread it, so that's how I know. I think on the cover of High Wizardry it shows Dairine with glasses.

The Digest cover (the one that looks more like a cartoon, with Darine using a laptop with one hand and holding a mobile with the other) shows Dairine with glasses -

The Harcourt cover (with Nita and Kit looking at Dairine...which never actually happened. Huh. Well, looking through a door that opens into Mars.) doesn't show her with glasses, as far as I can tell. My magnifying glass only goes up to 10x.

Threads close when nobody's posted in them for 30 days. Look at the dates on the threads. Then realize you could have posted in those fora at any time. You want more discussion in the book forums? Create new threads there. You're sick of everything being off-topic in Chatter II? Don't reply to anything there.

The thing is that every member and every post on this board determines its character and its direction. The power is yours. Don't expect "someone else" to be responsible--that's where the trouble starts. :/

I like the current fashion for small lenses, but I'm old enough that I remember when big-framed glasses were the fashion. I wonder if we'll see a swing back to larger frames... I'd also like to mention that high-index lenses rock. Again, I'm old enough to remember wearing really thick lenses--the proverbial "coke-bottle-bottoms". The newer thin plastic lenses rock.

Hmm, thirty days... I never knew that about the way these forums are designed. They are different. Well, anyway... If there's a thread closed, and I should want to talk about it, you said that I should start a new thread. Wouldn't I get yelled at if I did that?! I thought that you originally were the one who started complaining about getting off topic, in this very thread, in Chatter II!

And yes I COULD have posted in those threads... if I was a member here at the time they were active.
