Admin Appreciation Month

Anyway....

It has just been thought of to have an Admin Appreciation Month. Although we should vote as to what month it is. If we vote August, it'll have to wait until next year because August is two thirds over already.

On the other hand, we'll have to decide what exactly Admin Appreciation Month would be. Maybe we'd all be extra-extra-EXTRA careful about not posting anything that would need "moderation"? Maybe we'd shut down the forums for the month so they wouldn't even have to do anything at all, or pay the month's fees? Actually no, a whole month is too long to shut down the forums... maybe the middle two weeks, or the third week. They'd be off near DD's birthday. And then the other weeks we'd just be extra-extra-EXTRA careful about not posting anything that would need "moderation".

The first thing we'll figure out is what month the Appreciation Month would be. That's what this poll is for, so let's talk about that for the time being. I was thinking May, DD's birth month. This would be good because school would be almost ended for everyone in school, so the forums would have a break before everyone comes back in for the summer full time.

Personally, my vote would be every month. Instead of just paying extra attention one particular month, why not the entire year, just thinking before you post? I'll bet the administrators/moderators would appreciate that more.

I'm also confused about why the forums would be shut down for a few weeks instead of a whole month, if it happens. Why only a few weeks? How is a whole month too long to shut down the forums? [rallies] For the admins!

Personally I don't have a problem with having them down for an entire month. I'm just thinking of other people, who go in to chat every day and make it a part of their lives... I see no problem with this.

The Admin appreciation month could be for all of us members (or vast majority) to allow the forums to be shut down during this month, so they didn't have to do anything with them for a while. And I think that we're all quite careful with the way we post. Many other forums are horrible; one-liners making up half of the post population, everyone with bad grammar... We're a very good community, as far as I'm concerned.

But Gigo, the point of the poll was to vote for what month this appreciation activity would be. So from the sounds of what you said, you think that shutting down the forums would be the most meaningful activity, and I agree with that. But which month should it be?

Like I said before I think it'd be neat to do it in May, for DD's birthday.

As for paying the fees... Some people have chipped in, according to the widget.

And posting things that don't need moderation? Like Gigo said, we should be doing that anyway, not just for one month.

Just my thoughts on the matter. As for a vote - I don't have one, because I think that we should be appreciating the mods at all times.

When you think about it, (I said this already) this community seems to me as though it's very careful and respectful of the moderators all the time. The admins here haven't been active for the past few days- I don't know why, they probably are occupied by more important things- and every thing's fine, civil and organized, around here still, right? What I was saying is that we'd be extra careful during that month. An interesting and important word, that "extra".

Our discussions would have to be put on hold for that period of time, of course. Have Lee perform a little time-stop spell on the forums. Besides, I'm sure that we all have better things to do then to spend all day in chat, or replying to forums. Been thinking of cleaning the extra bathroom? Do that. Maybe the garden shed needs organization- (God knows ours does, and I was doing that right before I came here to take a break!) people can get those waiting-to-be-accomplished-for-too-long tasks done, and end up feeling good to get it all over with and having their lives a little better from that perspective.

i don't think shutting down the forum is a good idea...i mean, true the mods have to do a LOT of work here, the forum being so big, but that doesn't mean they don't enjoy having the forum too! *is also not entirely certain it's a very good idea talking about shutting down the forum without involving any of the staff* also, while we probably do have better things to do, what about those who have best friends on the site, and no way to contact them outside of chat, or pm? i think an entire month without seeing a best friend isn't neccessarily that great a thing...

I've noticed that everyone so far has voted on April. I don't like April. Oh well, when the admins get back on here maybe we can just let them decide. Does that help?

It's not April, it's May. I admit... it does look like April. If you look at the text saying the month, the bar for that month is above. It confuses, me, too; it's not just you.

how about during that month we just be extra thankful? it seems more reasonable to me then trying to get the admins to shut down the entire forum (particularly considering the fact that up to this point no mod has even posted their oppinions on the matter in here)

The issue is still that if we are extra thankful then all we are doing is making sure we are doing what is right then instead of always. Why not be extra thankful always, isn't that more like what they disearve. If you say you want to be extra at one point, then you can be extra thankful and care always and work on obeying the rules and making sure others understand to read the FAQs and such. I feel like the problem with making an appreciation month all that is done is making people not care otherwise and think that what they are doing is fine and they don't need to worry about putting all the effort in always when that is what should be do.

And thus, I vote never. Theoretically it'd work but it feels like it'll just make it worse, or at least not better. Always do what you can for them, if you have extra donating or subscribing is a good idea. Always make sure that you have enough in your post that it is worth taking up the space that it does. And always do what you can for the community in general.

I just thought of something.... I wish there were a way for the thread creator to close/delete the thread. Theoretically if I deleted the (my) first post in this thread, the whole thread would be deleted. Although that's not an option; I'm thinking that's probably because the first message contained a poll, and maybe polls are protected. I'll to to some thread I've started that's meaningless or one-answer kind of thing and see if I can delete my first post in it.... I'll experiment.

I'm always really careful about not making one-liners, or any other things against the rules, and most of my posts are always long speeches.... Although everybody here has a few one-liners kicking around in the Forums somewhere; sometimes they simply can't be avoided, in which case it's a good idea to apologize for it. Hey; when you start apologizing for the one-liner, it's not a one-liner anymore, so issue resolved.

So, yeah, we'll just forget about having a period of time thanking the admins. I guess.

Alright, this is the story. We don't have rules for the sake of having rules. In other words, if we say, "no one liners," there's a reason behind it. We don't want one liners because we don't want our forums to be filled with short, useless posts. We want every post to have a purpose and value and content. And when we say one-liners, we really mean any short post.

So, when you avoid the one-liner definition by adding another few lines of apology, you avoid "one-liner" by a technicality. That's not good enough; we want quality.

Furthermore, have respect for mods and admins. The word of Kli, Garrett, and Lee are law. If you haven't yet, read the rules, FAQ, etc.

I vote October, because it's a nice month. I have no idea what we'd do, seeing how everything is counter-productive. The minimum we could do is *ahem* use capital letters where's they're supposed to be. *prods young reader* We could fix up the newbie help zone or whatever it's called now. <3 And make sure new members read it.

October is cool. But during the school year I haven't got that much time to devote to the internet. I have homework and other obligations. During the summer I'm on the forums more frequently so helping to take care of the forums wouldn't be a problem. I like October though. Halloween.
