It's implied several times that the One is so far beyond what we perceive as reality that we can't come in direct contact with it.

It's similar to the psuedo-polytheistic beliefs of many ancient cultures (and to some versions of Christianity as well).

One of my favorite parts had to be the bed-to-Pluto thing. Cracked me up.

Just finished it today and loved it, just like everyone else. I'll need to reread to pick up all the details.
Too get back to the original topic, there is definatley something like that in Jewish legends. The Some-Number of Righteous Men, IIRC. (I think I saw it capitalized.) I can't recall how many--seven comes to mind, but I don't think that's it. I think it's more. They have some function in maintaining the world, so they do sound like the pillars, although that didn't occur to me. I'll have to look it up; right now I'm going on fuzzy memories from a 10th grade project on The Chosen.

It's also an old Taoist belief that the world is prevented from flying to pieces only by the actions (or non-actions) of those individuals who understand The Way. It's rather similar...

I love this book! *sigh* I can't believe it's over. We all have to wait a while to find out what else will be happening to our favorite characters. But it was worth all the wait.

I personally enjoyed this one the most because it was the first time that I finished one of the wizardry books where I did not have that small pang of pain inside me. I finished the book and had this wonderful feeling inside me that said "even for one moment, all is right in the world." The last time I felt this way was at the end of High Wizardry when we fid out that The Lone One had been redeemed...

I may sound nutty but I can't look at the cover of the book and have a small smile on my face...

I'll agree that the final scene with Millman was very cool. I like the idea that he's not a power, not a wizard, just an ordinary person who knows about such things. I think that's a point which DD's been making throughout the series (if she doesn't mind me putting words into her mouth) that it doesn't nessecarily need someone with special powers to make a difference.

About the book as a whole, well I liked it. I have that same feeling that a few others have expressed that maybe they got off a bit lightly, or Darryl didn't really keep his promise to the Lone Power. I'll have to re-read that bit to see what I missed.

I'm also intrigued by the Lone Power's suggestion that one day Nita is going to betray Kit. I wonder if that is just him talking tough, or some foreshadowing.

                        I think it's just you...

                        I LOVED:

1)The TV vs VCR vs DVD vs Remote!!! That was hilarious!

2)The bed to Pluto scenario! "If your bed had actually sat in any liquid nitrogen, it'd do more than creak, it'd shatter."!!!!!!!!

3)Mr. Millman. He's just a great person, and Dairine will DEFINATELY benefit from him.

4)Ponch in this book. His personality is becoming clearer and clearer with each book. And the "meaning of life" bit was great:
"Give him a biscuit and tell him it's an allegory."
                        "What,
                        life?"
                        "No, the dog biscuit."
                        !!!!!!!!!!!!!

5)Darryl, once he's all right again, and his meeting on the Moon with Nita and Kit.
"I wouldn't think they would let you out of their sight."
"They haven't. I'm home in bed."
That part just cracked me up for some reason.

6)The very ending, just after 'Mela opens her package and pulls out the... whatever-they-are.
                        Neets?
                        What?
Can I come live with you?
There was a pause... and then laughter. I'll be right over...

I just loved that. Such a lovely, light-hearted way to end the book!

I was under the same impression. Just because you aren't on errantry, doesn't mean you aren't a wizard. I think Millman definitely has some magical connections, and, while it would be poignant and meaningful to have someone who doesn't need magic to help people, I think there is definitely something magical about him. Of course, that doesn't mean that he can't help people without magic - wizards are supposed to ease pain where ever they find it, and if easing that pain doesn't involve magic, no one's the worse off.

Ah.. A Wizard Alone, wonderful book.
I finally caved and bought the hardback after re-reading the whole series. (one of the reasons it took me till now to find this spiffy website)
It was very much worth it. Things I loved:
1- Ponch! loyal, philosophical, lovable... I could go on and on... Can he please be a wizard? I mean, can't you just imagine the fun of Ponch on his Ordeal? Or has it already started with the compassion and vow to stay with Kit forever if necessary?
2- The scene with Nita and Darryl's knight. I dunno why, but the knight's vigil makes me smile.
3- Carmela! She needs to become a wizard too... Can't you just picture it? Armed with a laser eggbeater and her language skills? Plus, I think she'd have an entirely different flavor of wizardry from everyone else.. no fear of her being another Dairine..
4- Millman. I though Nita was going to tell him about her wizardry, I never expected he'd figure it out on his own! Nice surprise.
5- Interstellar Cable. Millions of channels, nothing on. Hee.
That's all for now I guess... hopefully I'll see everyone later at the chat.

"I'm on errantry and I greet you."
"I am a Jedi. Like my father before me."
